Feature: Health for the Whole Self

Katie, of Health for the Whole Self, is an absolute delight. Her blog is a huge source of inspiration for not only bloggers and loyal readers, but for every person who wants to change their life for the better. Each post is written in a familiar and kind voice, a letter to a best friend that oozes with care. Topics range from delicious food finds, recipes, Katie’s fitness pursuits, and most importantly, her candid and honest journey to finding the balance of mind, body, and spirit. With a focus on the beautiful principles of intuitive eating, Katie’s insights makes me question my own perceptions about weight, body image, and my relationship with food. I leave Health for the Whole Self feeling encouraged and supported, eager to live a life full of self love, foods I crave, and moving my body in a way that feels good.

Here are Katie’s answers to my completely unprofessional and often nonsensical questions: Enjoy!

What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?

Someday I would love to get certified to teach group fitness classes like Kickboxing and Body Pump. I’m passionate about exercising, and I think it would be a fun way to share that passion with others.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always been a bookworm, so I used to dream about becoming an English teacher.

Which popular sitcom character are you closest to?

I think I’m a lot like Monica from Friends…except for her obsession with cleanliness and organization. I’m much more of a slob than she is!

If told that this is your last day on earth, how would you spend it?

Eating good food, cuddling with my husband, hugging my family members, and writing down everything I wish I had known before so that others could learn from my mistakes.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Someone once told me that in order to be the best I could be for others – the best wife, the best daughter, the best friend, etc. – I first needed to take care of myself. That was a lightbulb moment for sure.

If you were given $5,000 to spend at any one store, which store would you choose?

I would have a hard time choosing between Anthropologie and Crate & Barrel.

If you could choose one of your personality traits to pass on to your children, what would it be?

My ability to be self-aware and self-reflective, because it means I’m constantly learning about myself and becoming a better person for it.

What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?

Becoming a freelance writer!!! I’d love to write magazine features and perhaps even a memoir, but the road to becoming a writer is inevitably filled with failures and rejections.

What are your top three favorite foods?

Toughest. Question. Ever. I’ll break it down this way. Favorite breakfast: blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup. Favorite dessert: warm, homemade cookies – oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip. Favorite food that goes with breakfast, dessert, and everything in between: peanut butter.

If you had to only eat meals from one fast food chain restaurant for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Probably Chipotle, primarily for the guacamole.

If you could dine with any living famous person, who would it be?

Toni Morrison. Her books changed my entire life outlook.

What is your ultimate breakfast?

As mentioned above, blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup is always a winner. But basically any breakfast starring bread products is a-ok in my book.

Your ultimate lunch?

A sandwich!!! I am a sandwich-fiend. Not surprisingly, I believe everything is better when slapped between two pieces of bread…preferably toasted.

Your ultimate dinner?

Anything featuring sweet potato fries.

Your ultimate dessert?

Homemade cookies fresh from the oven, with a small glass of milk for dunking.

When did you start blogging?

January of this year, so about 6 months ago.

What do you like the least about blogging?

When I know what I want to say but just can’t find the right words to say it!

What is your favorite recipe? (Link to it!)

This Caramelized Tofu with Pecans and Brussels Sprouts is definitely one of the best recipes I’ve ever made.

Which post of yours is your favorite? (Link to it!)

My favorite posts are the ones that focus specifically on Intuitive Eating. I think this one about Last Supper Eating is my ultimate favorite because one of the authors of the book Intuitive Eating left a comment!
