Putting My Mom on a Diet: Week 9 Meal Plan and Weigh-In

For new readers, here’s a brief refresher: I’m putting my mom on a diet, here is the plan I designed for her, and here are her weekly updates: week 1week 2week 3week 4week 5week 6week 7, week 8. Welcome!

We’re 9 weeks and over 20 pounds into this dieting thing. Can you believe it? I can’t. Some days, it feels as though Mom has been living this way forever, and then something will catch me– a bag of jelly beans at the drugstore, a box of nonpareils at the movie theater concession stand–and I’ll suddenly remember the old days, when it often felt as though I would always be the “weird healthy eater” of the family, and she would always be my Coke-swigging Mom. It feels better now. It feels as though our relationship, and not just our food, is finding its own more common, middle ground.

 

Monday

Breakfast: 2 cups Cascadian Farm Honey Nut O’s (200) + 1 cup 1% milk (110) = 310

Lunch: 1 Joseph’s Flax, Oat Bran, and Whole Wheat Lavash Bread (100) + 3 ounces Dietz & Watson homestyle turkey breast (90) + 1 Laughing Cow Light Garlic and Herb Cheese Wedge (35) + 2 teaspoons honey mustard (40) + lettuce and tomato (15) = 280
+ 1 cup red grapes (60) = 340

Snack: 12 almonds (80) + 1 ounce raisins (100) = 180
chicken cutlets with brown rice

Dinner: 4 ounces (2 ultra-thin) breaded and pan-fried chicken cutlets (250) + 1 cup Near East Roasted Pecan and Garlic Brown Rice (~200) + 2 cups mixed salad (20) + 1 tablespoon Ken’s Lite Caesar Dressing (40) + 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (20) = 530

Dessert: Edy’s Outshine Lime Popsicle (70)

Total: 1430

Tuesday

Breakfast: Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin (160) + 1 tablespoon peanut butter (100) + 1 banana (100) = 360

turkey and cheese salad

Lunch: vegetable base (3 large handfuls mixed greens, ½ cup chopped bell pepper, ½ cup chopped cucumber, ½ cup shredded carrot, 6-8 cherry tomatoes=50 calories) + 3 ounces sliced turkey breast (90) + 1 1/2 ounces feta cheese (about 6 tablespoons or 1/3 cup, crumbled = ~100) + 2 tablespoons Ken’s Steak House Balsamic with Honey dressing (90) = 330

Snack: 12 almonds (80) + 1 ounce raisins (~100) = 180

pulled pork and sweet potato

Dinner: 1 serving Slow Cooker Barbecue Pulled Pork (280) + 1 small-ish sweet potato (6 ounces cooked =150) + 1 ½ cups mixed salad (20) with 1 tablespoons Ken’s Steak House Light Caesar Dressing (40) = 490

Dessert: Skinny Cow Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream Sandwich (150)

Total: 1510

Wednesday

peanut butter muffin

Breakfast: Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin (160) + 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter (100) + 1 banana (100) = 360

Lunch: same as Tuesday (330)

Snack: KIND bar (210)

*Our family is now OBSESSED with KIND bars. They’re delicious.

hot dogs

Dinner: 2 all-natural, all-beef hot dogs (160 per hot dog = 320) + 2 teaspoons yellow mustard (10) + 2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish (15) + 1/2 cup Bush’s baked beans (150) +  2/3 cup steamed green beans and almonds (60) = 555

Total: 1455

Thursday

Breakfast: Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin (160)

*Andie note: Why Mom insists on eating these plain, I will never know.

Snack: KIND bar (210)

Lunch: Turkey and Cheddar Salad
vegetable base (3 large handfuls mixed greens, ½ cup chopped bell pepper, ½ cup chopped cucumber, ½ cup shredded carrot, 6-8 cherry tomatoes=50 calories) + 3 ounces sliced turkey breast (90) + 1 ounce Cheddar cheese (100) + 2 tablespoons Ken’s Steak House Balsamic with Honey dressing (90) = 330

Snack: 1 1/2 cups chopped cantaloupe (75)

steak sweet potatoes

Dinner: Dinner: 4 ounces grilled sirloin steak (beef sirloin is 60 calories per ounce = 240) + 1 medium baked potato (150) + 1/2 tablespoon butter (50) + 2 cups strawberry pecan salad (150) = 590

*Andie note: This meal was nearly identical to the one pictured above (taken last week), so I figured, hey! Use the photo!

Total:  1365

Friday

*Andie note: As I mentioned in this post, I went away for the weekend and left Mom to her own devices from Friday through Sunday. These are the meals she chose for herself.

Breakfast: Plain Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin (160)

*Andie note: For satiety’s sake, I wish Mom had included a protein (a cup of milk, an egg, an ounce of cheese, two slices of bacon…). For deliciousness’ sake, I wish Mom had at least toasted it. For mindfulness’ sake, I wish Mom had eaten it while sitting at a table rather than in her car on the way to work. But hey, at least she was content with her choice when asked, and that’s all that really matters.

Lunch: Cheeseburger with caramelized onions (Mom only ate half of the bun and I’m assuming that the beef patty was 8 ounces of 85% lean ground beef which equals 480 + ~100 for caramelized onions  + ~100 for half of a bulkie roll + 100 for 1 ounce of cheese = 780)
+ side house salad with 1 tablespoon balsamic vinaigrette (100) = 880

Dinner:  4 ounce 85% lean ground beef cheeseburger (240 for beef patty alone + 100 for cheese = 340) + 5 bread and butter pickle chips (50) = 390

Total: 1430

….

 

Saturday

Breakfast: 2 cups Cascadian Farm Honey Nut O’s (200) + 1 cup 1% milk (110) = 310

Lunch: Ham and cheese wrap
Joseph’s Flax, Oat Bran, and Whole Wheat Lavash Bread (100) + 3 ounces Dietz & Watson low sodium deli ham (90) + 1 ounce sliced cheddar cheese (100) + 2 teaspoons honey mustard (40) + lettuce and tomato (15) = 345
+ 1 1/2 cups chopped cantaloupe (75) = 420

Dinner: ~5 ounces Baked Haddock (this recipe substituting haddock for cod = 300) + 1 smallish baked sweet potato (6 ounces cooked = 150) = 450

Dessert: Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwich (150)

Total: 1330

Sunday

Brunch at a baby shower: 2 thin slices honey baked ham, 2 small meatballs, 1 lemon-raspberry danish, 1/2 cup pasta salad, 1/2 cup mixed green salad (with dressing), 1/2 cup fruit salad, 1 lemon cupcake (my rough estimate = 1200)

*Andie note: This brunch is what Mom later described to me as an “eating rampage.” Honestly, though? It seems pretty standard for a party. I’ve certainly eaten much more at brunches. Yes, she could have lightened it here or there, but the only question I really had for her was, “Did you enjoy yourself fully?” And when she said yes, I knew it was all fine. She’s not eating like this every day, so as long as she remains mindful, and as long as she’s able to return to her normal pattern of eating afterward, I consider it a win.

Dinner: 4 ounces slow-roasted pork loin (160) + 1 cup roasted, seasoned sweet and white potatoes (250) = 410

Dessert: Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwich (150)

Total: 1760

*Andie note: Overall, I think Mom did well while I was away. My only wish would have been for more vegetables (specifically of the green, non-starchy variety) to have made an appearance.

Starting Weight: 210

Week 1 Weight: 201.4 (down 8.6)

Week 2 Weight: 199.4 (down 2.0)

Week 3 Weight: 199 (down 0.4)

Week 4 Weight: 196 (down 3)

Week 5 Weight: 194.4 (down 1.6)

Week 6 Weight: 193 (down 1.4)

Week 7 Weight: 192 (down 1)

Week 8 Weight: 188.8 (down 3.2)

Week 9 Weight: 187.6 (down 1.2)

Total Pounds Lost: 22.4

 

Mom’s thoughts on progress so far:

“Hi everyone,

Thank you all so much for the encouragement again (and again!), and for all of your kind words about the progress pictures.   I just wanted to throw a big thank you out there to the little woman who made this happen for me, my Andrea.
I can’t even begin to let you know how much I love and admire her for all that she is and does for me.  Andrea has helped me in ways that no one will ever know.  She is my mentor, my best friend, and someone that has always been there for me.  I just wanted to talk for a minute about the Andrea that I know, the one that you may not know.  With Andrea, what you see is what you get!  She is not about glamour, snobbishness, or boasting.  Andrea never talks about dieting, except on her blog.  She does not judge what people are eating and never (ever) shames you when you have overdone it.  She never says, “well I do it this way” or “the healthy thing to do would be…”  because truth be told, Andrea feels that everyone should do what works for them.  She never sits down to a meal and says I can’t eat this or that or discusses the calories in any food, and would prefer not to discuss any calorie talk at the dinner table.  She doesn’t do that because maybe everyone at the dinner table is not dieting, and she doesn’t want food consumption to be all about nutrition. It’s about enjoying the meal, and spending time together.  She is never the food police, not even to me.  When she bakes for an event, she makes it the way we like it, with no substitutions, because she is a fabulous baker and not one to sacrifice flavor.

But beyond the food aspects, she’s the type of person who would help anyone, who would give you the shirt right off her back. We fight constantly about her getting a new outfit for special events, but no, she doesn’t need to, she tells me.  Looks are not important to her, as she sees a person for who and what they are, including herself.  She and her brother, Anthony, have that in common, he doesn’t care about appearance either.  I am sorry for rambling, but I just wanted you to know her like I know her.  She is my inspiration for life and the reason I am who I am today.

Now with that settled, I have to say things are going well for the most part.  I am still enjoying the wonderful food and trying new things at every opportunity.  I really love certain foods and ways of preparing them, like roasting vegetables.  Unfortunately, Andrea had been away this weekend and I am so used to her taking care of me that I struggled with doing for myself.  I know that this sounds pathetic, but even though I know what to have, my idea of portion sizes are so different from Andrea’s that I had a bit of a struggle while trying to contain myself.  Also, I attended a baby shower on Sunday, it was a brunch, and my sister Maureen and her son’s mother-in-law hosted it.  Let me tell you, I grew up in a family of 9 kids and my grandmother lived with us.  My sister Maureen never lost that big family mentality for food. She really knows how to throw a massive party.  Maureen’s theory is that if 50 people are coming, each person has to have at least one (hopefully 3) of everything available.  She bought a cake for 100 people and cupcakes for 75 (remember there were only 50 people there).  It is her intention that every guest have a complete meal to take home and the last one to leave takes everything left over.  In my heyday that was great because I was always the last to leave! She is awesome, she knows her desserts and has every bakery from here to New York on alert that she will need pastries.

I have to say, the day was tough.  How could I pass on the danish, the cupcakes, or the variety that she put out?  Don’t anyone tell Andrea, but I did have to try a few things.  I had a danish, damn it!   I also had a little pasta salad, 2 meatballs and some fruit salad and finished it off with her gourmet cupcakes.  I am sorry for not feeling able to control myself a little bit better, but I just couldn’t.  I did not have any sandwiches or mimosas or appetizers, so maybe I am not going directly to Hell.  The good news is that I had a great time, and regardless of my brunch, last week I was able to lose a little more weight.

*Andie note: I don’t even know where to begin. I feel like Mom’s trying to nominate me for president.  Mom, I love you and I thank you, but everyone else–you should know that I really fought Mom on publishing this piece. Andie and Maryellen – you both are such amazing women and I look forward to reading these posts every week! So inspiring! It’s a mirror of a similar journey I’m experiencing with my own Mother except the tables are flipped, I’m on the weight loss journey and being able to openly discuss health and food in a healthy manner has only improved our relationship. Rock on Maryellen you are doing a fabulous job and I know how much having a supportive family member like Andie means to you!

Maryellen – Whew! Relieved the eating rampage was just that. I’m cheering for you! Also, sounds like this is good practice as you learn how to do this all yourself and you did so well! Great job!
Andie- Also, I was thinking yesterday how so many of these meals are gluten free or easily adaptable to be and that makes them easy for me to do or slightly modify. Yay for that!
The salmon with brown sugar and chili was so good my 7 year old daughter got big eyes and gushed about it!

Andie – I stumbled onto your blog one day while on Pinterest and I was immediately hooked. I have weight and body image issues and tend to lose hope very quickly. Your blog inspires me to be a better person, get healthy and not to self-loath. Your recipes are amazing and really help me stay on track, your love for your family reminds me of my own, and your outlook on life (even though there will always be down days) is something I aspire to. Maryellen – Your progress is nothing short of amazing. The pictures last week showed such a huge change in a relatively short amount of time. (When I first looked at the post, I was at work and exclaimed “WOW!” out loud. Naturally everyone in the office wanted to see what I was looking at and they exclaimed “WOW!” too! I have to freeze “my” whole wheat healthy bread too – my husband and son refuse to eat it. I hate to waste so I keep it in the freezer and pull out a piece or 2 at a time to defrost in the fridge. Works just fine.

the design is called tin can alley seven. I bought them at Macy’s 2 years ago. They still sell them. I love them because they are bone china and take a beating. You can microwave with them and they are pretty indestructible. They sell all the pieces at Macy’s and Bed Bath and Beyond, and I highly recommend them for durability and style. Thanks again!

Haha I love your mom, and she obviously loves YOU! I’ve loved following along on the diet journey you two are taking together. My mom is working on losing weight and I wish I lived closer so I could help her like you help your mom!

Please, oh please, tell your mom to take is easy on the food guilt. Indulging from time to time is OK, even when on a diet! Purposefully indulging in food you REALLY love, in reasonable portion sizes, is what makes dieting sustainable in the long run. I’m sure you know that, Andie :) The important thing is that she indulge on purpose (as opposed to out of control binging) and that she indulges in foods that are worth it, that she really really loves. If she does that, there’s absolutely NOTHING to feel guilty about. I just see so many women who feel guilty about eating, and that only leads to shame and other bad feelings that lead to disordered eating.

I would like to posit that your indulgence at the party was even really a slip up, but a necessary component of your diet in order to preserve your sanity, and i’m glad that you are not beating yourself up about it (i’ve been there).

Maryellen, firstly, well done on the incredible and sustained progress. Also your love for Andie is so apparent in your notes at the end therefore, if you have lovely children then it is because they must in part, have learnt from you. I hope you don’t think me too personal but it would seem that Andie is being so diligent with you because she knows how much your worth is too. So, don’t be too hard on yourself if you think you’ve de-railed your progress, your wonderful child thinks you’re worth investing time, energy and a belief in your success so hopefully in time will you.
Andie, I think we can all “see” all that your mother has described about you. I live across the pond from you and I think you should run for president or at the very least be given a sainthood!

I love that you shared your thoughts about your splurge Maryellen. I had told Andie a while ago about finding a Dr that put me on a strict diet. The first three months are very strict. I am a around halfway through the strict part and plan to transition to the next phase that reintroduces some starchier options and vacation meals. I am plotting to make my BDay in October my transition day and am envisioning all sorts of foolishness I can get into (anything with the word cake in it). I am finding that the limitations right now are making me less than happy with my meal options but I think it’s enough to break that overeating cycle to interrupt your habits. I, like Andie, encourage you to listen to yourself. If your heart sang for a moment then let it be. My heart sings when I see your progress both in numbers and visuals as well as in your appreciation of your daughter. Losing my mom over 4 months ago was the hardest thing in my life to date. The only thing that makes it ok is that I know how complete and whole our love for each other and her love for others was. Embrace it all! The way you do one thing is the way you do everything :)

I have really enjoyed following your mom’s progress. I was at 204 in February and at 180 now, so I am almost the same size as her, and really finding it inspiring to follow her journey. It’s great that she is learning to eat properly and adding years to her life so you can enjoy her all the more. Your mom sounds great!

I love this series! It is so motivating and encouraging to see that eating on a diet CAN be delicious! I was wondering if you could do a post on how you prep your mom for success each week, do you prepare a bunch ahead of time, or do you prep the night before? Do you plan out meals before you shop or do you get the basics and wing it? I am always interested in how I can create creative meals for myself without having to spend a ton of time in the kitchen doing it. Thanks :)

You are such an inspiration Andie !!! I stumbled upon your blog today, and after reading your weight loss journey that is exactly how i feel at this moment in time. I tried to get email updates but it doesn’t work :( Thank you for sharing your story with us. I strive to one day get where you are now,( making healthy choices and teaching my family about how we can be healthy and to be a happier me inside and out!) But having you talk about how you took this one day at a time has lead me to use the same approach sounds easier and more manageable so I have been asking myself if I can get through my obstacles one day at a time, as you know some days are better then others . But I am finding myself not knowing how to start or begin is just devastating and frustrating. I am certain this is just a fork in the road. I know it sounds silly but you honestly have helped me soo much by reading your journey.!! :)

Maryellen, you are doing so well, and I admire the way you so quickly get back to your plan after going a little bit off track. It’s a great lesson to me – I too often make those small mistakes into day-long (or week-long… or more) blowouts! And how could you not gush a bit about Andie! Her blog shows such compassion, a rare quality at any age, and especially about food/weight issues that women so often berate themselves about!

For a ‘rampage’ I thought you were pretty restrained considering the minefield of goodies you had to navigate. My sis is like yours, delicious food and far too much of it, even more so than me, but hey, that’s how we were raised to treat guests. I send all the leftovers home with guests too, lol. It’s far safer that way. Often my guests aren’t the kind that cook for just them selves, my stepdaughter and MiL especially, so that works for them and us.

Well, ladies, we refer to you by name here in our Virginia household. We are your very own personal cheerleaders and greatest fans. You both bring joy to healthy eating habits and your relationship makes us smile. My 16 year-old son now sees that I am not the only parent who loves, loves, loves her child! Thank you so much for sharing your stories with us. We are continuing to lose weight and feel so much healthier thanks to the great recipes and practical meal plans. Hi Andie,

I came across your Blog tonight and after reading your story, and the diet plan that you have your mom on, it reminded me of my sister. She lost 30lbs (she just hit that mark as of yesterday btw). After my second nephew was born, my sister was weighing over 170 pounds which was a lot for her body size and frame. One day I told her, this isn’t the sister that I know! My family was very encouraging and just let her know that she could do it. One day she asked my brother-in-law for a Wii and his response was, If you loose 10 pounds, I’ll buy it for you? That was all she needed. Her journey began and now she’s 30 lbs lighter and looking great.

Your story is inspirational and I’m going to forward your blog to my family to read.

I find these posts really interesting because I love the back-and-forth with you and your mom. It’s like a conversation that we’re overhearing, and you can see aspects of both of your personalities in it. I hope that when she’s lost all the weight she wants to lose and is maintaining, that she’ll still have a voice in some of your posts.

It is so exciting to know how well ‘mom’ is doing. She has a very special daughter. They both love each other very much, and it shows by having ‘mom’ eat better so they can spend more time with each other here on this earth. Bravo to both of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
