Ideally, I’d like to be in touch in some way with everyone who stays for dinner. You coming here, reading, and feeling so moved to write me- well that’s one of my truest joys as a writer. I read every comment, every letter, every single thing that slips in my inbox. And I love them.
However, each day over 100 blog-related emails come to me. For the first two years here, I took about 2 hours everyday to reply because it’s intensely meaningful to me to be in touch with the folks who have questions or comments on my particular brand of crazy. As the blog has grown, though, I’ve come to realize that I just don’t have the ability to respond to all of them.
If you don’t hear back from me, please know that I’m putting all of my energy into this blog and writing two books- a weight loss memoir followed by a cookbook.
I encourage you to leave thoughts, questions and the like, in the comment section of posts so that we can all have an open conversation. Perhaps other readers have answers that I don’t. That sort of community- the dinner conversation, if you will- it’ll make this corner of the blogworld a little richer.

I can’t tell you how much I love your blog! Your recipes, your wit and your inspirational stories really motivate me to not only be a better eater, but to also be a better person.
I DO have a question, though. You probably have answered it at some point in your blogging career, but what dressings do you use on your fantastic looking salads? I notice sometimes you include what you ‘dress’ it up with, but sometimes not. Do you use any if it’s not listed?
Oh, and how in the world do you get your avocados to look so pretty?

Hey Laura! Thank you so so much for that kind comment. I’m happy to hear that this blog serves at least one purpose other than me just being able to play out my own insanity publicly. Here are my fave dressings: Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette Classic French Dijon Vinaigrette Raspberry Balsamic Vinaigrette Lemon Parmesan Vinaigrette
These go on anything. But generally, unless I specify which dressing I’m using, I top salads with hummus- somewhere between 2 TBSP and 1/4 cup of Trader Joe’s original hummus. Creamy and delicious.
My avocados only look pretty when I first cut them. I slice them in half, keep the skin on and the pit in the half that I’m not using and refrigerate it in a tupperware. I then lay the part that I’m using cut-side down on a cutting board and slice thinly lengthwise. Fan it out so that you get that splayed look. The refrigerated portion does get brown- any of the avocado that is exposed directly to air, but I don’t mind.

I love your blog and the recipes, but can you recommend an easy way to print the recipes without the pictures? I have tried copying it to Word, then cutting out the pictures, but for some reason I don’t always manage to highlight it and copy.

Hi Deb! First, thanks! And I absolutely understand it must be hard to print any of these recipes. You bring up an excellent point, and I’m going to spend some time creating printer-friendly versions. Or simply pasting the recipe (text only) at the bottom of the post so that you can easily copy it into a Word doc. Thanks for the reminder!!

Hey Andrea! I said it once and I will say it again, this blog is my new love and I come to here to lust at the food porn and I am so inspired by your story. I love that despite being thin now, you haven’t lost your hunger (pun very much intended). I know that you have talked about your belief in moderation and balance with food and life, but my question is when you were in the throws of losing the weight- how did you actually do it or what worked best for you? You mentioned Weight Watchers but I am wondering, did you find that you were eating the same things every day because you knew what it contained? I am 30, had a baby a year ago, and thought the weight would magically drop off like Heidi Klum. Not so much. I have 60 pounds to lose and it feels as likely as climbing Mt. Everest. I would love some real deal advice about what really set it off for you to lose the weight for good and move on with your life and how you did it on a daily basis.

You have such a cool story…one you can be so proud of. Weight loss and eating and diet aren’t brain surgery. What most people don’t figure out is… it’s all about the food you eat and how much of it you eat. Diets don’t work. Most are fads that give a moment of help but can’t be maintained. It’s about the choices you make in the food you eat…and exercise. If people would just eat real food…not that much, and really exercise they would see the pounds roll off and STAY off. It took cancer to get me to figure that out but 2 years ago I started exercising and eating real food and not so much. I’ve maintained the same weight for 2 years. I don’t plan on changing and I’m eating real food that contains real vitamins and nutrients…not manufactured food created in some lab. I’m not following a ‘plan’, just eating fresh fruit & vegetables…not much meat (no red meat) chicken and fish, no dairy, mostly organic…and in much smaller portions. I ride my bike to work (20 miles round trip) and go to the gym every morning. It works!!

I bought Women’s World this morning, like I do every single week, and I have to tell you, I finally think I got the kick in the butt I needed once again. 8 years ago I lost 130 lbs. on Weight Watchers and kept it off for 5 years, until I took up a job with Jenny Craig helping everyone else lose weight, and stopped putting myself first anymore. Needless to say I left coaching for JC 2 years ago, and have been struggling with the 65 lbs. I have gained back 4 years ago ever since. I am still a Health Coach with my own business, and of course every day is always a challenge for me. I am questioning now, if this is the right field for me? Being in a horrible accident 3 years ago, and 3 surgeries later, have not helped me get back on track. I only hope I will believe in myself enough very soon, to make the changes I can to get this weight off, before I end up at 330 lbs again.
You look amazing, and I will keep your article close at hand with me, to keep the motivation going. Everything you did to lose weight, I know works the best and most effective way, and I have to stop letting the weekends with my family get in my way.

I belong to weight watchers, go to the meetings every week, still not losing the weight. Get on the scales, get disappointed every time that hand doesn’t move down. I’m going to try your method, the only thing you don’t have a calorie count. T he recipes really look good.

I have been reading your blog and I love it. I weigh what you used to weigh and having a tough time getting started. I was wondering if you could give us a peek into you daily food journal? I would love to see what you daily food intake consist of. I read in your article that you cook on Sundays for the week and freeze. Can you tell me what food items are good to freeze? Hi Wendy! Thank you for reading and for your comment! I do like to cook a big batch of food on Sunday. I mostly refrigerate the portions, but I also freeze from time to time. Things that freeze well: marinara sauce (you can leave meatballs in the sauce if you’d like), meatballs, soup (put it in heavy duty resealable plastic bags and seal it tight, then lay them flat and you can stack them), lasagna, chicken pot pie, lots of sauces. Hi, I just finished reading your story in Womans World and was truely inspired and hopeful. I am 43 years old and weigh 419 lbs. I have struggled with weight since my early 20′s and more so in the latter years. I have been on a diet now for 3 weeks using the calorie counting method and have lost 7 pounds. My problem is that I HATE salads and vegatables. I am hoping that you can give me some advice on other things that I could eat that would help me lose the weight. I know that it is going to be a long fight but hope that with everyone’s support that I will be able to lose the weight and live a happy and healthy life again.

As a dieter strugling to reach my goal weight, the first thing I look for when I see a new recipe is the nutritional information. Calories, Fibre, Fat, etc. If I don’t see that listed, I move on to the next recipe. I don’t have the time to try and figure out the nutrition values for myself so I completely skip any recipes I see that don’t already have this done for me. I could not find this information on any of your recipes. I really think you shouold consider including this very important information for people like myself. Just a thought.

I have long outgrown Weight Watchers, but I didn’t have an alternate plan until now. How many calories should I aim to burn each day and how do I know when I’ve reached that number? I am a stay at home mom of three teenagers and find it difficult to feed a family of five healthy food on a small budget. When I buy healthy foods: veggies, fruits, etc. I spend twice as much. Just wondering if you have any suggestions.
Hi Seanda! Thank you for your note! I’m so glad to hear that you felt inspired, that really makes me feel good. I know that eating healthy can be daunting and expensive. I would suggest trying to shop the sale items- each week there are a number of veggies and fruits that are on sale because they’re in season- stock up on those and whatever you don’t use you can chop, place in a tightly sealed plastic bag, and freeze. I would also recommend eating more frozen veggies. These are just as nutritious and they are often on sale. Places like Costco sell big tubs of fresh baby spinach for a fraction of the price of the regular supermarket. Buying big bags of apples and oranges is also cheaper. Whichever foods (fruits/veg) that you eat a lot of- go to a wholesale store like Costco or Sam’s Club. I try to read the grocery store circulars each Thursday night to figure out which stores have which items on sale and then I make a list and can shop at a few different ones on Saturday or Sunday. As long as the stores aren’t too far apart (meaning you’d spend money on all the gas from driving), I think that shopping around is a great help budget-wise. I hope this helps!!
Good afternoon! I just received a call from my grandma and we talked on the phone for about 15 minutes about your article in Women’s World. I have struggled with my weight my whole life and now im at 252 pounds at only 19 years old. I recently joined Weight Watcher’s again for the fifth time, two weeks ago. I have lost 10 pounds. This time I really think I’m ready. Weight Watchers always says that you can have whatever you want as long as you eat it the right way, meaning portion it out, stay in your points, etc. Last night I really wanted Dairy Queen, so I got a medium cup with rainbow sprinkle. I feel so upset with myself now, but I didn’t let that steer me out of the way. I think the hardest thing for me on this journey of weight loss is the inspiration, I get let down very easily. I can’t wait to dig into one of your recipes!

I recently gained an unwanted 10 pounds and I’m going to nip it in the bud before it get’s worse .Could you give me some tips on how I can lose 15 pounds in 6 months? I know thats a huge time frame but its because I really want it to stick. I already eat pretty healthily so I think its just portion sizes that got me gaining weight, or eating out of boredom. I love your site!! I lost a lot of weight several years ago. The hardest part after was learning to enjoy food again without worrying about what it did to my body. It was hard to come to a happy medium between how I was eating before and how I did when I lost weight. I think I finally have, and now I have seen your site. This has shown me that I’m not the only one who had to learn to enjoy food again but in a way completely different from when I was heavier.
I am a Registered Dietitian and came across your blog because a client of mine mentioned some vegan chocolate muffins she made and I asked her if she would bring in the recipe next time she came. I’m fairly new to visiting your site and I can’t stop LOL!!! I love the beautiful pictures of your recipes and your stories. I think your story touches so many of us because we’ve all been there and know the mental struggle.
Myself, being a fellow sugaraholic…..I’m so in awe of how you’re able to incorporate your favorite sweets/desserts into your daily eating regimen yet still remain so healthy and fit.
Please, if you don’t mind, could you share just a bit on how you were able to overcome this. I’ve read your blogs about how you finally realized it was the amount of the food you were missing. I love to eat sweets in bulk too and I have the hardest time allowing myself one cupcake, one cookie, etc….a day because I simply can’t stop. Then, the ole’, typical, negative thoughts start rolling in my head saying, “well, you’ve screwed up another meal, another day, so might as well just scuff down the rest of those cupcakes now.”
How, were you able to “allow” (if you will) yourself to incorporate these dieters forbidden foods back into your daily eating regimen and have it work so wonderfully for you?
Also, do you allow yourself come caloric deficit when you eat them to help balance things out?

I too am a fellow sweet lover. My problem is that I would love to put back some of my sweet favorites into my eating plan but I can’t seem to stop and just one. I can’t have just one cookie, cupcake, etc. without making it an all out sweet fest. I’ve read your blog regarding your realization that it was more about the quantity you missed when you took out your favorite desserts. I can understand that. How were you able to incorporate the sweet things you love so much back into your eating plan while still maintaining your incredible weight loss?
I feel I would be more successful at my weight loss if I wouldn’t always feel the love/hate relationship I have with food. I too am either dieting or binging—I so relate.

Hi Antionette! First, thank you! It’s really hard getting to the point where you can just eat one of something, but you just…do it. And do it again. And again. If you just trust yourself and realize that you’re not a monster, you’re not a raging maniac who will eat until you can’t eat anymore (not all the time anyway), then you will begin to realize you can be trusted with the food you love. Try it once. See how you feel. Know that the only way to live life is this way, and then make it a habit and reinforce how good it feels to eat what you crave, to eat what you love, but in a loving way. I hope this helps

I am trying to lose 100 lbs. I am a Mother of a 27 year old son, 26 year old daughter, 11 year old daughter and two grandaughters 5 and 4. I work nights and am always sleep deprived. I get really discouraged, but I will be checking back on your site quite often for the inspiration I need. I really love how you talk about a relationship with food, many diets tell you what you can and cannot eat, bad/good. I have always felt this un-natural. I too have always loved to cook, wonderful memories with my Mom and making memories with my children and grandchildren in the kitchen. Hi, Andrea! I came across your page yesterday, and I am completely amazed at your strength and success! Your story reminds me so much of myself…but I haven’t begun my weight loss journey yet. I have always had a bit of a battle with my weight, but I was never what I would consider big by any means. I kept myself busy in high school playing sports and dancing, so I never noticed any of the extra calories. I lived at home my first 2 years of college. My mom is a health-nut and workout freak, so living and eating at home helped me watch my weight. I moved out my junior year of college and the problems started. I ate what I wanted when I wanted, I stayed out late, I partied. Now, 5 years later, I’m mourning the loss of that 140 pound girl who was always happy and outgoing. Now, I sit here at 230 absolutely heartbroken that I have let myself get to this point. I understand the depression that comes with the weight. I understand the eating because you’re upset that you keep eating. I understand the comfort that only that piece of cake/cookie/pie/candy/french fries/chips can bring. I get it…but I don’t. I am having such a hard time breaking out of this shell that I’ve been living in for the past 5 years. It’s gotten so bad that I avoid people I was friends with in high school and college just so they won’t see what I look like now. I think, “I was a beauty queen in high school…what in the world would they think of me now?” And it hurts having to hide. But it also hurts to have to face it. Food is without a doubt my kryptonite, my addiction, my betrothed. Food has always been a central fixation in my life (even though my mother is neurotic about it). Family gatherings are feasts. Some of my best memories are of baking with my grandma when I was a little girl. Pancakes and bacon that my daddy cooked every Saturday morning. It’s hard to let it go. You and your journey give me hope. Looking at your pictures and reading about where you started and where you are now shows me it is possible without having to kill myself to do it. It’s difficult reading blogs or magazine articles about this kind of thing and the people writing have never had this type of struggle. They have no idea what it’s like to be in this body. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting your journey out there for those of us who are looking for inspiration and motivation from someone who’s actually been there.

Let me start by saying, thank you! I am currently going on 21 years old, female, 5’7″ and my highest was 284 lbs, two weeks ago. My life has never been steady, I never had the choice of thing to eat because we had so little money that I couldn’t be picky. I just got into that habit. But now that I have the money, I’ve spent the last two weeks eating healthier. And while I was starting to see some small weight loss, that’s when I ran across your blog. I never thought I’d get over the 200 lb mark. And when I did, I was devastated. Then once it kept climbing, I never thought I would lose weight, or find a motivation to do so. When I read your story… I felt like I finally found someone who understands. Your height and starting weight was relatively close to mine, you were the same age, and you did it. I despise running, I have asthma because as a child my mother smoked around me all the time. So running only makes me feel like I’m going to collapse. But I’ve began walking. So far, 2 miles everyday. It’s only been a couple of days, but from 2 weeks ago, I’ve lost nearly 10 lbs, and I’m starting to see that if I stick to this, if I continue, I’ll just see more results. Thank you, so freaking much. I have been battling with myself for the last 2-3 years to find some sort of motivation to start the weight loss. And you were it. You’re amazing! (By the way, I was even more in awe that you’re in Seattle, WA. I was born in Spokane, lived in Seattle for about a year, and now am located in the Tri Cities.)

I just found your blog today and I have to say you are speaking to my soul. I have been overweight my whole life, 10 lbs 10 oz at birth (my mom is amazing to have squeezed me out!). In 2001 at 269 lbs standing 5’6″ I started on my weight loss journey and over the next few years lost a little over 125 lbs. However I still struggle to find peace with my body and overeating and live in fear I will gain all the weight back. You are an inspiration for me to continue to trust myself and my body and love the person I am. I look forward reading your posts as I find my own path to a happy me.
For your Chocolate chip cookies have you ever tried to split the batch and do 1/2 without letting the dough sit in the fridge? Im planning to make these tomorrow for guests, but I just cant see decing to make cookies and then having to wait 2 days for them or planning 2 days in advance.
Hi Eric! They work perfectly without letting the dough rest. I just do because they get extra chewy, but they’re still fabulous making them right away

I just happened upon your blog (on StumbleUpon, no less) and instantly fell in LOVE with your recipes! I have switched entirely to what I call “God” foods (i.e. foods that are fresh from the ground, or the creatures that eat the food fresh from the ground! Nothing pre-boxed etc.) in the last two years and after loosing 30 lbs I’ve managed to get my kids to like eating that way too. So.. since you seem to have a very devoted following, I wanted to pass along a “sort of” recipe for Brussel sprouts that I’ve been making for about a year now, which helped me convince MANY self proclaimed “Sprout Haters” to convert! I’ll do anything to convince someone who doesn’t like veggies to at least pick ONE that they’ll eat. This one seems to be an all around Favorite, even with those who HATE the “Martian Heads” (as my mom called them.) I just thought you might like to try them yourself and then pass it along on your blog. i’d love to read that even MORE people have been converted! (It also seems to work similarly with Broccoli) If you already know this trick, then please excuse my ignorance of your catalog of recipes! I’ve only got so much time on the computer after work before my face hits the keyboard zzzzzzzzz!
1) Find Medium to Large Brussel Sprouts in any quantity, (but be forwarned, they are as hard to quit popping into your mouth as potato chips or french fries!)
2)Cut the Stems off, and peel off the Guard leaves, (usually the first 2 or 3 leaves) as well as cutting off any bad bits.
3)Slice each Sprout in half from Stem to Top
4) in a ziplock baggie or a mixing bowl, combine:
*Olive Oil – enough to be absorbed by spices with enough left to thoroughly coat sprouts (more can be added later if needed)
*Lawrys Seasoned Salt
*Cavanders Greek Seasoning
*Sea Salt
*Steak Rub of your choice (beware the extra pepper!)
*Pepper (may not be needed if your rub is extra peppery)
*Itallian Seasoning to taste
***The ammounts of spices vary each time I make these.(I tend to measure by sight and taste) But they almost always turn out fantastic. Just remember to taste your steak rub to determine if it is too peppery for your liking.***
dump the sprouts onto a baking sheet (preferably with sides so that they dont slide off) and turn them all to face cut side DOWN.
Broil the sprouts JUST long enough for the top layer of leaves to start brown or singe. If you broil them too long, that’s okay too, just peel off the burnt leaves (my son loves them that way tho!)
ENJOY! They are addictive! Be careful! (also VERY good the next day cold!)

Hi Andrea – I just discovered your blog a couple weeks ago and I love it! I find myself looking forward to it each day, like I would a tasty piece of chocolate.
I too lost quite a but of weight (don’t know the exact number because I stopped weighing myself as I grew heavier) but looking at your before pictures we could have been sisters.
I had a baby about 19 months ago and am now pregnant with my 2nd and am struggling with my body image again. I didn’t lose every pound of “baby weight” but was close to my happy place before I got pregnant. I know it’s the gaining, even though totally justified, necessary and reasonable, that just makes me scared that I’ll become the cute “chubby” girl again. I seem to be losing trust in myself.
Just wondering if you’ve had those moments and if you have any tips on how to battle through them. I started reading Geneen Roths books and already think she will be a huge help.

I have also been meaning to write to you to let you know that I have tried several of your recipes on your grandfather. One I particularly remember is your Beef Stew. It was delicious and we both enjoyed it so much. (Much better than Dinty Moore, by the way!) He is so very proud of you! He keeps a copy of the October “Woman’s World” with your picture on the cover on his coffee table so he can rave about you to everyone who comes in. I almost feel like I know you! I stumbled across your blog when I was reading someone else’s blog and she posted a link to one of your recipes. I LOVE your site.
I have lost 145 lbs myself and your blog about maintenance and exercising really struck home with me. I’m a walker too. Then I started looking through the recipes and had to read them all because I enjoyed your commentary so much.
I know you don’t have children yet, but can you do some teenager-friendly dinner recipes? The three biggest things I have learned on this journey are:
1. My kids are still going to prefer POGOs and Pop-Tarts to anything I serve. My son hisses at anything green and my daughter swears celery and potatoes make her tongue itch)
2. I get food boredom. A girl can only eat so much Greek Yogurt and Quinoa, ya know?
3. Even when my body is all healthy, Brussel Sprouts still taste like dog sh!t(or what I envision dog sh!t would taste like.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have never felt more capable of losing the weight I carry until now, now after reading your weight exercise story. Still being at the start of me weight loss and only currently down 5 pounds I run. I can’t even run a lot. But I connect in every part of your experience. Feeling it after a run, feeling like I’m making progress. I connect to your thoughts, thinking I’ll be happier once I lose the weight. I don’t know if happier is possible, I’m in a very loving awesome relationship but the confidence and to be able to stand up without adjusting my close a thousand times, to wear a tank top without a sweater. Those type of thoughts, I wanted to tell you how much you’re exercise history has meant to me to read, it was more than a read it’s a motivation and a lesson. The days I feel like I just can’t run, I can’t handle another foot. I’ll walk. Thank you.

Hey Andie, I’ve touched bases with you a couple of times… but I’m in the middle of this whole “okay, let’s get this going” thing trying to get back on track (I’m starting WW counting again and trying to get an exercise regiment in place) but while walking down the vitamin aisle at the store found myself at a loss. I’ve been told numerous times that I need to start taking a multi-vitamin but have NO idea as to what I should be looking for. I was curious if you were taking one and if you had any advice for what type I should be looking for?

I have always loved your recipes and today was the first day I read your “story”. I can’t believe I have not ran across that before. I also read every article about weight loss, read magizines, watch TV shows, I also keep a detailed food journal with workouts. But I am struggling to lose the weight. I lost 60lbs in 1 year. Which is amazing!! And I am so proud of myself. I have at least 50 to go. And for the past 1 1/2 I have maintained my weight but can not lose a pound to save my life. I have tried weight watchers for a change, I have mixed up my workouts, I started running (which has helped me lose inches but not weight), and I keep a food journal. I just recently took my daily calorie intake WAY down to 1100 to 1200 calories/day. And I kept my working out schedule to 4 times a week. I finally started to see a lose, I lost 7lbs in 3 weeks. Then I stopped losing again. It is so frustrating, I am trying so hard. I would love to know if you had any advice to share with me. My workouts are High Intensity workouts, I try to burn between 600-800 calories per workout. I am still over 200lbs and I desperately want to get to my goal weight, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is nice to hear that even though the journey is tough, it can be done without sacrificing, well, everything! There is such a misconception that someone must give up all foods they love and all time they have in order to be healthy and lose weight.

First I need to say that I love love love love your blog! I have actually never come across one before where I have felt so included in my reading experience. I am totally charmed and feel like we became fast friends. You just didn’t know yet! So, a major thank you is in order.
Second, you look awesome. I had been at about 160 until senior yr of hs and then gained about 25 lbs (what a good yr i picked, right?). I’m not really sure why? Maybe the stress of venturing out somewhat into the less protected world? There is really no reason that sticks out in my head. Anyhow, I lost 50 lbs the summer before my freshman yr of college and felt great and then would fluctuate 10-15, sometimes 20 lbs and sometimes it is a struggle and sometimes it isn’t.
I am just wondering with all of the super yummy looking food you post (totally running to the local produce market later today), how do you maintain looking so slim?
Could you share what would be a typical food intake day for you?

I just wanted to tell you how well written your blog is!! I also have lost a lot of weight (70 lbs.) and I love how you wrote that even when you lose the weight you realize its only weight you lose. That rings so true with me, in fact I didn’t know how to act when I originally lost the weight in 2005, so I went on a rollar coaster of loss and gain until today! I am now back to my goal weight and have become a nutritionist and personal trainer and finally know how to love what I am eating and actually cook wonderful meals

I just came across your blog from Pinterest, and I have to say, it is the most inspiring, well written blog I’ve read. Ever. I absolutely adore you, your writing style, and am almost giddy with the motivation I’ve just discovered through you.
Two weeks ago, I started my weight loss journey (again) after hitting my highest weight ever. People tug from every side telling me to eat THIS way, or do THAT work out, or I’ll never lose the weight. And all along, I keep thinking to myself what you’ve reiterated here for me-that working out, eating moderately, and losing weight shouldn’t be something you dread, and I shouldn’t have to try and juggle every weight loss rule that’s thrown at me. Anyway, I just went off on a major tangent.
My point is-you’re amazing, and I’m so grateful I stumbled upon your blog. I can’t wait to go back and read the whole thing. Thank you!
Andi- i have found this great new snack recipie you should try! i made it tonight and its soooo yummy.
1 cup pumpkin seeds
spray canola oil
3 tbsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg ( i use fresh grated)
1/2 tsp all spice
pinch of salt
1 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup roasted edamame beans
lightly spray pumpkin seeds with oil and roast in medium oven for 10 minutes- until they start to brown.
Mean while mix together spices and maple syrup.
tip warm seeds into spice syrup and return to tray on baking paper, allow to continue cooking for another 10 or so minutes until seeds are starting to puff up.
Tip into bowl with cranberries and beans and allow to cool.
Store in air tight container.

Wow, I am blown away from your blog. You are such an inpspiration to me! I have lost over 70 pounds so far, and I still have 25 more to go. But I have found that walking, yes power walking like a granny in a mall, is my exercise choice. I try to do 3 miles a day, and I take longer walks on the weekends. Running will probably not be my thing, but I am not against jogging. I plan to do a 1/2 marathon in April 2012 so I do plan on jogging some. I am at work reading this and am about in tears. Your story is so moving, so true, so real, and just what I needed to hear today. I have been working 14 hour days and still killing myself to squeeze in a 5-8 mile run 5 days a week……because it is what I think I have to do. About a year and a half ago I started my weight loss journey. In high school I had an eating disorder and at my lowest weight weighed 82 lbs at 5’7. When I got into college, I got treatment, but quickly swung to the other side of the scale weighing 190 lbs. I ADDED A WHOLE NOTHER ME! It was depressing, terrifying, and downright the lowest point in my life. I felt helpless and antisocial trapped in this large body I wasn’t used to. I decided then and there that starving, binging and purging, gorging, and all the other horrible techniques I used to use to lose weight just wouldn’t work any longer…..I had to lose weight the RIGHT way this time, and if that meant that it would take forever, then it would. I was determined from that point on to be healthy: eat healthy, exercise, and just LIVE LIFE, and I figured the weight would come off with time…..and it did! During my weight loss journey, my high school sweetheart, my boyfriend of almost 8 years, who stuck with me through thick and thin (literally and figuratively) proposed to me. It was with the wedding that I felt an instant NEED, not want, BUT NEED to be even thinner. I had already gotten down from 190 to 145 by the time of his proposal, but with the wedding looming, I kicked it into gear more. I started RUNNING instead of my casual work outs. Not just running, but training for races, running half marathons, and going at it 5-7 days a week. I got down to 127 for our wedding which was three months ago, and I still was not happy. Since then I have lost another 7 lbs and stand at 120 at 5’7. I have family that are aware of my past telling me I am getting too thin again and I can feel my Eating Disordered brain kicking back into gear. I know the more weight I lose, the worse my thoughts will get. I feel I have to run every day to maintain this weight I am at, but yet I am no happier now than I was at 130, 145, 150, 170 etc…..
So the point of this long saga is……THANK YOU! Reading this today just makes me realize that I have to live my life, and if living my life and being happy with it is skipping my run for today, it does not mean I am going to gain 10 lbs over night. If eating dessert one night makes me happy, then so be it! If staying home from running to watch movies with my husband that I rarely see makes me happy….then screw it, I’m skipping the run!!
Am I saying I’m going to stop exercising and running? NO!! Because it makes me feel absolutely fantastic about myself…..9 times out of 10 I LOVE running. I am actually very good at races and it is the one thing I’ve found that I’m particularly talented at, winning many races. However, I have now found the confidence to tell myself no to running on occasion if something else will make me happier that particular day….and it is all because of your inspirational story. So once again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You are incredible!!

I just read your History of Exercise (Parts 1 & 2)– I couldn’t identify with you more! I went from 220 to 138 (I’m also 5’9) about 6 or 7 years ago. I kept it off until my first pregnancy, gained 60ish (yikes), was again flooded with all those feelings of helplessness and having to re-lose, but after a year I’ve finally lost all but the last few pounds. My question for you is that you don’t look like you have “skin issues” in your pictures. You look tight and toned. You had mentioned in your blog that you were always heavier (as was I most of my life)…even after all of the weight loss and all of the training sessions, I still have jiggly skin. Any recommendations?
I recently found your blog through Pinterest. I am struggling to lose weight. I would say that I have about 30-40 more lbs to go and have been at a standstill because I’m scared. I’m scared of not being able to use my weight as an excuse. I worry about gaining the weight back and I’m not even at my goal yet! I can’t seem to fully pinpoint the reason I started gaining weight after college. I hear to many people, that have lost weight, comment on how overweight someone is or how they shouldn’t be wearing something. I’m always amazed that these people that once struggled too are OK with making fun of overweight people. I am 5’3 and weigh around 143, and I’m not fat, just overweight and can’t seem to lose the last 10-15lbs that I need to. I work out and don’t eat all the time. Hi there. I somehow stumbled upon your blog. I read as much as I could. I cried. I have recently lost weight and I am still getting used to it. I felt the same way about food and exercise. I completely had to change my life and my food choices, which is tough when no one around you is. I can now run for 72 minutes or 10km when I could barely run for 7 minutes before. I am so proud of myself, but I cannot even imagine how far you have come. You are an inspiration. My father was very ill with brain cancer for years and it took a toll on me- my weight and my spirit. After his passing, I did something for myself. It is difficult comparing sizes with three sisters, but I am happy now. I also love reading and trying recipes all of the time- but the best part is making things for everyone else- it is much more enjoyable than eating it myself. I recently read in your blog that you figured you had to exercise strenuously every day to maintain your weight- I thought that until I read what you wrote- I have worked out for over 65minutes each and every single day for over a year and made my friends and families’ schedules revolve around it. It is terrible. I want to change. I hope I can. I hope you realize how much you have touched me. I needed to hear it from someone.
Let me just say that you are such an inspiration. I absolutely LOVE your advice, recipes, and stories. You make me want to reach the “After”, to lose the weight and to gain the knowledge & appreciate of having been there. I am a mother of a 2yr old little girl who looks to me for guidance. I have recently began to realize how out of control my weight has become. I love to make sure that we have home cooked meals in our home. I have glanced at your recipes that you have posted. I love to read your blog. I was going through pintrest when it led me to “what I miss from 135 lbs ago”……I cried because when I go to part two it was everything I think about daily. I found out I’m pregnant with our 4th child a few days ago, I went to my doctor today and he did a few check ups and weighed me. I came home and cried cause I HATED that number on the scale.
I can’t go to the hospital I want to, as according to the BMI I am OBESE! Isn’t that a nasty word! I’m Obese! I’m not sure why I’m writing to you! I just happen to find your site today while playing on Pinterest!

tried the cookie recipe let the dough set in refrigerator for 10 hours, set oven at 350 cookies were done after 8-9 minutes. i have thermostat on oven and one that hangs inside so i think temp was ok . what do you think i did wrong.i am looking for a thick chewy cookie. this was my first time baking,and am a little discouraged. thank you

Getting my eating under control has been terribly difficult because I’ll do well for awhile, then relapse and feel extremely guilty. Would you say that something like Weight Watchers would be a good option? I mostly have my family’s support but a lot of the time they will still buy the unhealthy snack foods and eat whatever they want while I just watch and get discouraged, then eat something bad. I’ve also had a lot of traumatic family events like divorce in 1st grade, then my dad suffered a severe stroke freshman year of high school, and then 2 knee surgeries before I started college so food has always been that comfort area. As I am beginning my journey I hope to look to you for inspiration and you have helped me see that this is something that I can achieve! Thank you so much!!

I, too, have struggled with weight my entire life. It has taken me until I was 25 to really realize that no diet could help me…that I use food to escape…I eat when Im happy, sad, anxious, depressed, etc etc. The “Peace With Food” Section of this blog made me bawl my eyes out..but they were good tears..I was crying because I didnt feel so alone. I found it a couple of months ago when my aunt sent me the link in an email and ever since I have been hooked to your courage and strength and determination at losing and keeping it off. So the reason I am writing you is I am needing to get some advice from somebody who lost around the same amount of weight that I need to lose. I am 29 and need to lose 95 pounds. My husband and I would like to have a baby but it is really hard to get pregnant being 95 lbs over weight. I struggle at lunch and when I am having a really bad day dinner tends to be bad then. I am ADDICTED to sweets. Sweets are the enemy to me but I can’t stop eating them. I noticed that you gave up sweets for a year how did you do it. I am hoping that you can give me some advice on how I can gain control of my life and not let food run it. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

I absolutely understand. There have been many points in my life where I’ve felt like I’d sooner die than give up sweets. I love them so.
You can do it, though.
Here’s my advice: Give yourself one sweet a day- preferably dessert after dinner and before bed. This way, you won’t feel like you’re giving them up and you’ll have something to look forward to while eating healthy all day. I always have dessert. Wouldn’t want to try to cut it out. So try to limit yourself to just one per day. And yes, it will be difficult at first. But after a week, you’ll feel stronger for having done it. Hope this helps

Wow……today was the day I needed to find your blog. I have been overweight most of my life and never more so since my dad passed away 7 years ago lest week. Not only losing him when I did……it W’s December &holiday season. Food was the band-aid. And not till this week did I realize hope much time had actually passed (it FLEW by) and how much I had gained. And as I am most days I was on PINTEREST and someone had pinned one of your recipes with the tag that you had lost 135 lbs. So here I came to see what it all was about………now my life has changed. Starting right this second. Thank you for being such an inspiration ….. I cant wait to start my new life and be unrestrained from my life.
Just curious–it looks like you’re not following calories so much these days. But you had done Weight Watchers and I’m guessing then switched over from points to calorie counting? When you were baking, were you then calculating how many points/calories each cookie or bar or slice was going to be? My relationship with food (cooking, baking, having great taste–oh my, but I love to make a goat cheese tart) and my weight and eating are very much like yours, with maybe some additional difficulties, but I really enjoy that you are not addressing weight loss/maintenance as just choices and behaviors, which often happens and is where Weight Watchers meetings have completely missed the point for this girl. And I would think seeing a nutritionist would be the same way, but your experience didn’t sound like that. I’m looking forward to making your Congo Bars. Nom nom nom.

Thanks for your comment. No, I don’t count much these days. You’re right- I transitioned from counting points on WW to counting calories- which I just found more freeing for me. When I was baking and on weight watchers, I would calculate the points in one cookie and one bar, yes. But I don’t have that info anymore. I hope you can plug the ingredients into an online recipe calculator and then break it down.
Yes, it’s hard when the meetings at WW seemed too prescriptive, too superficial. I find it’s the emotional piece that means more. But, that is often hard in a big group setting, and not all people want what you and I do

Very interesting blog! Your story is quite inspiring – especially your approach to exercise. My grandparents are in their 80s and are healthy and active. They didn’t “workout” a single day in their lives…they just kept moving by doing housework and walking. In the meantime, their children (including my mother), who played sports and were runners, have had all sorts of joint problems and hip replacements….doesn’t take a genius to figure out which method of movement is healthier!!

Hey! I am kinda in the same situation as you were in the beginning, and I was wondering how you dealt with the whole eating food in college thing. There aren’t many great choices, especially for someone on a meal plan, so I was wondering if you have any tips for someone looking to change their life. I plan on a study abroad in Australia in July, and I need to get in shape, since we’ll be climbing mountains. If this doesn’t get me motivated, I don’t know what will.

So many others have said it but you really are an inspiration. I have another 50 pounds or so to go and reading this helps me to get moving and stay on track. I have yo-yo dieted and been overweight since second grade (that is as far back as I can remember). Any time I get close to achieving the larger goal I set for myself I seem to fall off the wagon-so to speak. In your initial quest to lost the weight how did you maintain your focus and drive? You indicated you didn’t really deal with the emotional aspect of it until later. Which, by the way, really hit home with me. Finally-someone is able to articulate what I feel-or not-as the case may be. I long to be thin and healthy. I am just so afraid…of failing. Another question-what salad dressing do you use? Sorry if you have addressed this, I haven’t gotten through your entire site but I love to visit daily!

I followed weight watchers for the first 6 months, then transitioned into calorie counting- about 1500/day. I found that calorie counting felt more freeing than the point system. Hope this helps

I feel deprived, though I have still been successful. Now I am scared to begin incorporating other foods into my diet. Any suggestions?

I just found this blog off of Pintrest and I wanted to say that I spent an hour on here last night reading about your journey. I’ve tried and failed so many times to lose the weight. I can’t even bear to get on a scale anymore. I know I’m creeping closer to 300 lbs and I don’t want that. What I want is to take that first step that you did. Reading your blog about your relationship with food has really helped.

I am new to your site, learn of u thru Pintrest. I spend literally an hour a day looking thru your site, printing recipes etc. I myself have always been bigger than my class mates. Now after 28 years being big, I am ready to be thin and wear the cute clothes. I am not a big meal eater, never have been. Snacking is my thing. I call it grazing. I graze everything in my cabinets, including the choc. Chips in the freezer. Do u have any tips for stopping or atleast slowing the snacking? I know I am hungry, just bored!! You would think with a 3yr old i wouldnt be!!

Hi Andrea! I left a warm fuzzy comment on your recipe for the Buffalo Chicken Tenders. Love them! I had to share with you though, with 6 kids pan frying them meant me standing over the stove for 20 minutes, so I baked them at 400F for 5 min., just until they started to get crispy. Pulled them out, quickly dipped them, then put them back in the oven for a few minutes. Worked beautifully!

I am a college student who recently transferred from IL to Colorado for school. The first quarter was really tough. I didn’t know anyone, alone in a new city, trying to make friends at school.. I got lazy, ate when I was bored.. and now I regret it.
It’s a new year, new start. And I just joined the gym across the street from my apartment complex. I think doing all the free classes they offer will help me have fun working out while meeting new people.
However, I was curious.. what do you think is the best cardio machine to help lose weight? I really want to tackle the elliptical machine, but the articles online are making me confused with opinions concerning whether they help you lose or “bulk” up.
I have 3 months until I see my family again. And I love eating healthy.. I just have to learn and stick to portion sizes.
I hope to see results by the time my mom picks me up from the airport

I am in the middle of my weight loss journey (48 lbs gone so far) and I am really enjoying not only your recipe ideas but also the way that you don’t look at food as the enemy but as a beautiful friend that you get to enjoy in a healthy way! I have started to make the roasted broccoli and….oh my gosh….I LOVE it! I didn’t know it could taste so good. I am starting to realize how good veggies are when they are roasted. I was wondering if you roast other veggies and would love to read and “see” how you do them. I’ve tried beets and other winter vegetables before but I don’t think I am doing it right. I enjoy seeing the step by step process you do when you make your food…not only are the pictures beautiful but it also helps me to follow what you are doing a bit better than if I was just reading it. Andrea… I just found your blog, and I can’t tell you how I’ve sat here and literally laughed out loud while having tears rolling down my face.
A little over a year ago, I was within 10 lbs of my goal weight, and by making the choice that I was going to just let it all go and “enjoy myself” since my husband was coming home from a 6 month deployment (and I knew we would be eating out ALOT and celebrating once he got home). Today, I sit here having gained back every pound I’d lost (42 to be exact), along with another 20.
So with the new year I decided (as I do every year) that I need to get ahold of myself, and start eating better, and start feeding my family better. I’d come to accept that I was going to have whiny children and an angry husband since the only way I could comprehend how to get out out-of-control eating under control was to force feed them salads and to never again mention the words chocolate, butter, or creamy goodness. I was becoming bitter the more I thought about it.
But in stumbling across your blog, your story, and your honesty…I’ve realized that I can do this and that it’s going to be “okay.” Your section ‘What I Miss From 135lbs Ago’ is literally what I feel, what I fear, what I know I’ll miss. Food has been my best friend my entire life, and there is actually a relief in knowing I’m not the only one who misses so many aspects of it.
So I just wanted to say “Thank you” for inspiring me to keep at it, to keep trying, to not give up, and to continue to look to your site for what I CAN become!!
Hi Andie, I just want to say you really are a great inspiration for anyone who wants to lose weight, I only had to lose about 25lbs, but you really tell people the right stuff with saying you don’t have to give up any foods!!! The key is moderation and moving!
I feel people think they will never be able to eat pizza again, and I have to say I eat my pizza probaly twice a week (homemade of course) also my dark chocolate. I try to save for the weekend special treats and junk foods. Keep helping people on losing weight and I tell everyone to read your story if they have weight they want to lose. Your are a true person. Just came upon your blog today and wanted to say how much I admire you and your writing! Usually I skim food blogs for mouthwatering photos and good sounding recipes, but I found myself reading every single post of yours I clicked on. As someone who loves to write (especially about food), your blog is so inspirational! And I love your attitude of allowing yourself to eat what you enjoy and not feel guilty about it. Your story is an amazing testimony of how to find the beauty in yourself, regardless of where in life you are, but also inspires to keep on doing things you love to maybe help you find the weight and body you want. Middle and high school (forever ago. i feel. haha. i’m 23) was all about show choir for me. i lived it. and looking back on pictures, i see it did help me to maintain weight, even though i was still considered heavy. i’m pretty much the same weight as when you started your journey and i recently started looking up youtube videos about zumba. i just did 45 minutes of it and it felt like 5
felt like i was right back in choir singing and dancing my heart out. i love it
and i can see myself keeping at it. along with walking with my boyfriend that tells me all the time, without me saying anything, that i am beautiful and that he loves me just the way i am. no matter what
and that God created me just how i am. That. right there. is love. and motivation to just become healthy. not be skinny like the world wants me. cuz my world (God and Nate) love me for me.

This is an amazingly inspiring blog! I’ve been losing weight for a couple months now, and I’m catching myself getting swept up in the destination of my goal weight. I keep telling myself, “you can enjoy life once you are skinny.” I love that you loved life at every weight you were at… it’s honestly refreshing to read that!
Also, you look amazing, but you were always a beautiful girl! Did you ever have to have any sort of skin removal surgery from all the weight loss?

You will meet people who have your same goals.fitness and health. It’s amazing and they have them all over. I’ve been going to one for almost 3 years and haven’t gotten bored at all. My skill levels on so many things have improved. Things I thought I would never be able to do I can now do. You will be working out beside elite athletes and 50y/o+. All who care about fitness. Hello. What a inspiring story. I am right were you were. I have 4 kids and am looking for the great motivation to loose the weight. I lost my parents young to heart issues and I really try to use that to my advantage that I want to be here for my children. But at some point I fall off the wagon. I started a diet after the new year and only lost 3lbs
I have no time to go to the gym do to having 4 kids, work and the kids activities and fitting time into spend with the husband. So we have the Wii games Wii active and Just Dance 3 that I use for my exercise. I think my problem is, staying on track and focused. And it can be very hard to do so.
I love some of your recipes that you have posted and I will be making some this week.

Hey Andrea! This is a very inspiring story! I’m sitting on the couch now reading it to my mom. We are both very inspired by your story. We both have been struggling with losing weight! I’m 19 years old and I weigh around 155. I’m looking to become healthier and lose weight. I’ve always been very self conscious of myself and I’ve never felt comfortable going off with my friends to the pool or beach. Since we live in FL that’s what they like to do a lot. All of my friends are super skinny and I’ve always wished to be like that! I’ve always felt like people were looking at my size since I was bigger than most of the people we hung out with. I would like to weigh around 130-125. I just recently joined a gym and we’re trying to eat better. It’s hard to find things to eat. I’m very picky and I’m in college so I’m always on the go! Thank you for giving me hope that it is possible!!

Wow. This is a such a nice change from the typical all about exercising to lose weight. I can totally relate to you and your journey going from 220 to 125 lbs and although I gained some back (currently at 145) I had a question for you. The biggest thing for me to deal with in losing the weight was the extra skin on my thighs and stomach and arms. I was wondering if you had a similar experience and what you did to tighten up those areas from a heavier past.

Ahhhhh, I have been dreaming of the day I would magically land in Boston for no other reason than to hunt down the magical cake you describe from White’s Bakery. It looks heavenly and your description of it leaves my mouth watering. The day has finally come. My blackberry message indicator light went off and there lied an e-mail. $74 r/t from Chicago to Boston. I knew it was meant to be. Fast forward to the fare being unavailable and have to pay a little bit over $100 more and I was booked. No work Friday or Monday meant it was time to explore a new city and with one major goal in mind: cake! The promise of a new city is a worthwhile endeavor on its own, but your beloved bakery is literally the only thing on my itinerary thus far. They should really be mailing you many many free cakes for the business they are about to receive. Any other suggestions for exploration while in your hometown would be dearly appreciated (I know that you know where all of the good stuff is–food and otherwise).

Here’s how I got there…I found pinterest, saw your photo of Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, followed the yellow brick road to your site, recipe, and after my husband and I braved Denver’s snow storm, we had everything we needed to practically save the world! I mean, really, if everyone ate this soup – there would be peace, there just would be. THANK YOU for sharing your time and talents and inspiration! You have reignited a fire in me for preparing & sharing food glorious food! I know it’s only been a day, but you’ll have to trust me – I believe you have provided the ‘fork’ in the road I’ve needed. I identify with so many of the emotions and the struggle. i am not obese but, believe me not a day, let alone an hour goes by without that horrible war in my head. You have maintained for a long time now, and it seems you have figured out what it takes for you to stay at your Happy/Healthy weight. In the last year I have lost 40 lbs. Now I’m maintaining (whoohoo!). I changed my eating habits and took on walking as a hobby.
My sister came across your blog and passed it on to me. I continually come back and read your new post. Lots of times I enter random key words in the search bar to pull up old post for inspiration and motivation. My question is, how often do you weigh? Do you weigh to keep yourself on track? Perhaps I have a couple questions.
Is there an exact number that you like to stay at, or is there a couple of pounds fluctuation? I weigh once a week, about the same time in the morning, wearing the same thing. I have a number that I like to be at. This number works for me. Once in a while it will be a pound or two more. It helps me remember that perhaps I should have stopped at one or two donuts instead of more. There are those days you know.
Anyway, so I guess those are my questions. Do you have window of a couple of pounds to fluctuate? How often do you weight? Does weighing help you stay in check or on track? If you don’t mind sharing.

I just came across your blog today and cannot wait to try your Baked Ziti and Cheese Lasagna recipes! I like the others who have commented am SO IMPRESSED with how you’ve lost your weight and maintained it. What I love most is you are not as obsessive about it. You still balance enjoying yummy savory meals with staying fit. I truly believe that is key. I was able to relate in so many ways. I tried many workouts, tried running and would love it for a while but then just get bored or tired of it. Once thing I never get tired of and ALWAYS shows results for me has been walking. It’s amazing! I’m originally from NYC, we walk everywhere out there. I now live in Chicago. When I visit my P’s in NY we eat like champs yet I still lose 4 lbs without even trying? How can that be? The only thing I can think of is all the walking. Keep up the great work. I look forward to following you this year!

Camille and I just researched Central America like crazy and found a few places in Costa Rica and Panama that we fell in love with. Check Lonely Planet (the website) for lots of great travel advice about the area. We booked our houses through VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner) and found fantastic deals since we’re staying so long. I’d recommend you go to Manuel Antonio on the western coast of Costa Rica if you only have a short time. I hear the best things about it

What a story and what a journey. I found your blog today, as I am home resting from a severe bout of sciatica…you see I don’t rest…I run. I have lost 65 pounds, and am so diligent on my exercise, that I don’t relax much. However, I must now listen to my body, and I must take some of your fine advice. I thank you for sharing your amazing transformation, and I appreciate your wisdom, I guess even at 40, I still have much to learn. Hey Andie! I love all of your recipes, but especially the wonton and egg roll recipes. Have you ever made a larger batch and then put the extras in the freezer? I’m considering making a batch and freezing before cooking them- could make for an easy meal if you get home late or don’t have much time! I have tried to not over eat, but sometimes its hard. My problem is that i want to eat better/healthier and I go out and buy healthy foods, but I still eat fast food. I am addicted and do not know how to stop. I tell myself, “On Monday, I will stop eating it” by the end of the week I have failed. I was exercising a lot for a while, but got discourage because I wasn’t loosing any weight because I was still eating poorly. Please someone help! What do I need to do to break this habit!
