I can’t tell you how much I love your blog! Your recipes, your wit and your inspirational stories really motivate me to not only be a better eater, but to also be a better person.

I DO have a question, though. You probably have answered it at some point in your blogging career, but what dressings do you use on your fantastic looking salads? I notice sometimes you include what you ‘dress’ it up with, but sometimes not. Do you use any if it’s not listed?

Oh, and how in the world do you get your avocados to look so pretty?

Keep up the wonderful work – I can’t wait to read more!

Hey Laura! Thank you so so much for that kind comment. I’m happy to hear that this blog serves at least one purpose other than me just being able to play out my own insanity publicly. Here are my fave dressings: Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette Classic French Dijon Vinaigrette Raspberry Balsamic Vinaigrette Lemon Parmesan Vinaigrette

These go on anything. But generally, unless I specify which dressing I’m using, I top salads with hummus- somewhere between 2 TBSP and 1/4 cup of Trader Joe’s original hummus. Creamy and delicious.

My avocados only look pretty when I first cut them. I slice them in half, keep the skin on and the pit in the half that I’m not using and refrigerate it in a tupperware. I then lay the part that I’m using cut-side down on a cutting board and slice thinly lengthwise. Fan it out so that you get that splayed look. The refrigerated portion does get brown- any of the avocado that is exposed directly to air, but I don’t mind.

      Thanks again! Hope that helps!

      1. Deneene

Hi Andrea! Quick follow-up to this…do you make these dressings or do you buy them? If you make them, can you please share your recipes? Or if you buy them, can you please let us know which brands you prefer? Thanks for your help!

      2. josie

        Just had to tell you
If you squeeze lemon over the half avocado that you saving it does brown so bad

Thank you for your work. I too am on the same journey and your blog has lit a fire under my fingers and I began my own blog. I would love for you to swing by sometime. It’s not as fancy shmancy as yours but it’s a start to something wonderful and you are a part of it! I mentioned your blog already, hope this is ok.

      Hugs and roasted veggies,

      Mica

Recently my girlfriend and I tried to recreat your chicken parm wraps but we had a terrible incident. When we put the wraps in the oven the heat caused the wonton wrap give and all fillings fell sure the chicken / sauce mixture was just to wet, but we wanted to know how to correct or prevent this mistake next time. Do you have any tips?

  2. Laura

That definitely helps! Thank you so much for your response. I’m fairly new to the whole hummus thing, but so far I’m digging it. I believe I’ll try topping my salads next week with it to see how it goes. (I’m a fairly regular salad-everyday-for-lunch girl, too)

I’ll also practice my avocado splaying….pretty food equals a happy tummy!

Thanks again for all you do – you are an inspiration!

    PS –
    You also crack me up…:)

  3. Deb

    Andrea,
I love your blog and the recipes, but can you recommend an easy way to print the recipes without the pictures? I have tried copying it to Word, then cutting out the pictures, but for some reason I don’t always manage to highlight it and copy.
    Thanks.

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Deb! First, thanks! And I absolutely understand it must be hard to print any of these recipes. You bring up an excellent point, and I’m going to spend some time creating printer-friendly versions. Or simply pasting the recipe (text only) at the bottom of the post so that you can easily copy it into a Word doc. Thanks for the reminder!!

  4. Deb

I forgot to mention that I really do love the pictures and the way that you take a picture of each step! Thanks for your reply.

  5. Mandi

Hey Andrea! I said it once and I will say it again, this blog is my new love and I come to here to lust at the food porn and I am so inspired by your story. I love that despite being thin now, you haven’t lost your hunger (pun very much intended). I know that you have talked about your belief in moderation and balance with food and life, but my question is when you were in the throws of losing the weight- how did you actually do it or what worked best for you? You mentioned Weight Watchers but I am wondering, did you find that you were eating the same things every day because you knew what it contained? I am 30, had a baby a year ago, and thought the weight would magically drop off like Heidi Klum. Not so much. I have 60 pounds to lose and it feels as likely as climbing Mt. Everest. I would love some real deal advice about what really set it off for you to lose the weight for good and move on with your life and how you did it on a daily basis.

    Much love,
    Mandi

  6. Curt Stimpson

    Hey Andrea,
You have such a cool story…one you can be so proud of. Weight loss and eating and diet aren’t brain surgery. What most people don’t figure out is… it’s all about the food you eat and how much of it you eat. Diets don’t work. Most are fads that give a moment of help but can’t be maintained. It’s about the choices you make in the food you eat…and exercise. If people would just eat real food…not that much, and really exercise they would see the pounds roll off and STAY off. It took cancer to get me to figure that out but 2 years ago I started exercising and eating real food and not so much. I’ve maintained the same weight for 2 years. I don’t plan on changing and I’m eating real food that contains real vitamins and nutrients…not manufactured food created in some lab. I’m not following a ‘plan’, just eating fresh fruit & vegetables…not much meat (no red meat) chicken and fish, no dairy, mostly organic…and in much smaller portions. I ride my bike to work (20 miles round trip) and go to the gym every morning. It works!!

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Curt! Thanks so much for your comment! You are such an inspiration- it sounds like you’ve really found a beautiful balance in your life, one that we all could learn from. Thanks for sharing and for showing me and other readers, yet again, that life does not have to be a battle with food and/or our bodies. It’s as simple as we make it. Keep in touch!

  7. Julie

    Hi Andrea,
I’m so excited about your blog. I live in Seattle too but I sent this to both of my daughters… one in Ireland and the other lives in Florida… they are the same age as you and just loved it too. I made the pork loin with brie tonight, it was a big hit. Thanks for sharing your incredible story and your love for our city. I especially love all of your photos, the food prep photos are helpful but also your personal photos are fun to see. Thanks for sharing and being so real, you are a treat.

I’ve enjoyed every minute of reading your site. I can’t wait to try the recipes. Went to school in Amherst too. Antonio’s pizza always got me.

  9. Kim Mitchell

Hi Andrea, I found out about your site from Katrina and I added it to my Favorites. It’s fun when you mention names or places from your hometown–the story about Girl Scouts brings back a lot of great memories. You have a wonderful way with words and make me laugh. Also, I hope to try out some of your recipes as they all look delicious! Say hello to your family!

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Kim! What a lovely surprise to hear from you! Thanks for reading, I know it must be funny to read about things from when we were little, girl scouts especially. I hope all is well with you and the family!

    Andrea,
I just made the pumpkin whoppie pies and they are great. The only problem is that I already ate three so you have ruined my diet!

  13. Kathy Sennott

    Hi Andrea

Paul called and told me about your story in Women’s World. So exciting!!!! Congratulations!!!! I’m on your website all the time now looking for great dinner ideas. Let me know when you have a cookbook I can purchase for those times I don’t have internet access. Keep up the great work and good luck!!!

    Kathy Sennott

  14. Sherri

I bought Women’s World this morning, like I do every single week, and I have to tell you, I finally think I got the kick in the butt I needed once again. 8 years ago I lost 130 lbs. on Weight Watchers and kept it off for 5 years, until I took up a job with Jenny Craig helping everyone else lose weight, and stopped putting myself first anymore. Needless to say I left coaching for JC 2 years ago, and have been struggling with the 65 lbs. I have gained back 4 years ago ever since. I am still a Health Coach with my own business, and of course every day is always a challenge for me. I am questioning now, if this is the right field for me? Being in a horrible accident 3 years ago, and 3 surgeries later, have not helped me get back on track. I only hope I will believe in myself enough very soon, to make the changes I can to get this weight off, before I end up at 330 lbs again.

You look amazing, and I will keep your article close at hand with me, to keep the motivation going. Everything you did to lose weight, I know works the best and most effective way, and I have to stop letting the weekends with my family get in my way.

Thank you for sharing your story, as I believe these are the kind of stories that give people all around the world motivation, that they to can do it, if they really want it for themselves.

    Sincerely
    Sherri

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

      Hi Sherri!

First, thank you so much for your comment. And for sharing your story! Your journey is layered and inspiring- and you will get there again. I really believe in the will to change. It sounds like you know the way, you know all about it. It’s just a matter of putting yourself at the forefront of your mind- believing that it’s worthwhile to spend the time on just you. And staying present. I found that just existing in the present moment and not letting myself get overwhelmed with the big picture- that was a saving grace. Let’s keep in touch!

      All the best, Andrea

  15. Gloria Dillon

    Hello Andrea,

You are an inspiration, and I plan on following your plan. This is my first visit to your site. Just one question. Are calorie counts availabel for your recipes?

  17. Karen

Loved the article in Womans World and went right to the website to glance through and see what you have. I love the recipes with all the terrific photos but where is the nutritional information? Please let me know where to find it so I can fit these great sounding recipes into my meal plan. Thanks :-)

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Karen! Thank you! I’m sorry- I don’t have the nutritional information posted. I’m considering bringing it back though. If you’re interested in looking up the nutrition info, though, I’d recommend a site like spark people- they let you calculate a recipe pretty easily! :)

  18. Virginia

I belong to weight watchers, go to the meetings every week, still not losing the weight. Get on the scales, get disappointed every time that hand doesn’t move down. I’m going to try your method, the only thing you don’t have a calorie count. T he recipes really look good.

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Virginia! Thank you for reaching out to me! I’m glad you’re here. I understand the frustration of not seeing the changes you work so hard for. They will come. I do not currently have nutrition info on my blog, but I’m thinking I may add it, as I’ve gotten lots of requests lately. Thanks again! Andrea

  19. Brenda

I honestly have not had time to read your entire site, but I did not see any nutritional information with the recipes. Am I missing something or do you not post the nutrition? Thanks.

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Brenda! I haven’t posted the nutrition information. I may begin doing so, but I’d encourage you to use a site like sparkpeople.com for their recipe calculator if you’re interested! Thank you for commenting! :)

  20. Wendy

I have been reading your blog and I love it. I weigh what you used to weigh and having a tough time getting started. I was wondering if you could give us a peek into you daily food journal? I would love to see what you daily food intake consist of. I read in your article that you cook on Sundays for the week and freeze. Can you tell me what food items are good to freeze? I look forward to your feedback.

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Wendy! Thank you for reading and for your comment! I do like to cook a big batch of food on Sunday. I mostly refrigerate the portions, but I also freeze from time to time. Things that freeze well: marinara sauce (you can leave meatballs in the sauce if you’d like), meatballs, soup (put it in heavy duty resealable plastic bags and seal it tight, then lay them flat and you can stack them), lasagna, chicken pot pie, lots of sauces. I hope this helps!

  21. Louise

    Hi,

Here I am, 60 years old, 5’6″ and 220lbs. I’m so disappointed with myself and want to make a change.
I picked up the Woman’s World magazine which features you and your success. Your story is very wonderful. I’m hoping to visit your site daily to keep me looking foward.
I don’t know where to begin. I’ve looked over your site and I’m feeling overwhelmed. Probably just another excuse, but that is how I am feeling right now.
Do you have a suggestion about how to start? Planning a menu? How many calories a day would work for me? Planning grocery shopping?
I would appreciate anything that would help me get on track.

    Thanks ,

    Lou

  22. Arin

    Hi,

This is a FANTASTIC site and I loved the article in Women’s World!

I was wondering …. when I look at all your amazing recipes, why do you not add nutritional facts to them? I ask because right now I am doing Weight Watchers and was curious about points :)

AMAZING site. I am so luck to have found it.

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Arin! Thank you so much for your kindness!! I’m so glad you commented! I stopped posting nutrition info because I moved away from calorie counting for myself about six months ago, so it just didn’t really fit in with my life anymore. I have had several requests for adding it back in, so I’m considering doing that to help readers! Thanks again and I hope we keep in touch!

  23. Dawn

Hi, I just finished reading your story in Womans World and was truely inspired and hopeful. I am 43 years old and weigh 419 lbs. I have struggled with weight since my early 20’s and more so in the latter years. I have been on a diet now for 3 weeks using the calorie counting method and have lost 7 pounds. My problem is that I HATE salads and vegatables. I am hoping that you can give me some advice on other things that I could eat that would help me lose the weight. I know that it is going to be a long fight but hope that with everyone’s support that I will be able to lose the weight and live a happy and healthy life again.

    Thank you,
    Dawn

  24. Paulette Lammerding

    Hey Andrea,

I just knew you were destined for great things. You have always been an inspiration to me. I am so proud of you and send congrats and love your way….Maybe we will get a glimpse of you over the holidays….Love, Paulette

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Aaaahhhhh Paulette! Thank you so very much! It really means a lot to me to hear such kind things. I can’t tell you the number of times I say to myself (in your Nana’s voice), “Oh Hi Polly!” It’s obscene, really. I’ll definitely come by in December to say hello! I hope you’re doing well, and thank you again!

  25. Mary

Thank you for sharing your victory on your weight loss. I bought the magazine and I just started my healthy diet. So hopefully I will succeed like. Take care

  26. Melinda

    Hi,
As a dieter strugling to reach my goal weight, the first thing I look for when I see a new recipe is the nutritional information. Calories, Fibre, Fat, etc. If I don’t see that listed, I move on to the next recipe. I don’t have the time to try and figure out the nutrition values for myself so I completely skip any recipes I see that don’t already have this done for me. I could not find this information on any of your recipes. I really think you shouold consider including this very important information for people like myself. Just a thought.

  27. Chris

    Hi Andrea,

I read the great article in Woman’s World and for the first time in a long time I am very motivated to get myself back on track. I have long outgrown Weight Watchers, but I didn’t have an alternate plan until now. How many calories should I aim to burn each day and how do I know when I’ve reached that number? Did you use a pedometer? Thanks for the inspiration, and I love your website.
    Chris

  28. Rosemarie Frena

  29. Seanda

    Hi Andrea,

I was inspired by your story in Woman’s World. I have triple digit weight to lose as well. I would like to know how you finance your food. I am a stay at home mom of three teenagers and find it difficult to feed a family of five healthy food on a small budget. When I buy healthy foods: veggies, fruits, etc. I spend twice as much. Just wondering if you have any suggestions.

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Seanda! Thank you for your note! I’m so glad to hear that you felt inspired, that really makes me feel good. I know that eating healthy can be daunting and expensive. I would suggest trying to shop the sale items- each week there are a number of veggies and fruits that are on sale because they’re in season- stock up on those and whatever you don’t use you can chop, place in a tightly sealed plastic bag, and freeze. I would also recommend eating more frozen veggies. These are just as nutritious and they are often on sale. Places like Costco sell big tubs of fresh baby spinach for a fraction of the price of the regular supermarket. Buying big bags of apples and oranges is also cheaper. Whichever foods (fruits/veg) that you eat a lot of- go to a wholesale store like Costco or Sam’s Club. I try to read the grocery store circulars each Thursday night to figure out which stores have which items on sale and then I make a list and can shop at a few different ones on Saturday or Sunday. As long as the stores aren’t too far apart (meaning you’d spend money on all the gas from driving), I think that shopping around is a great help budget-wise. I hope this helps!!

  30. Elizabeth

Good afternoon! I just received a call from my grandma and we talked on the phone for about 15 minutes about your article in Women’s World. I have struggled with my weight my whole life and now im at 252 pounds at only 19 years old. I recently joined Weight Watcher’s again for the fifth time, two weeks ago. I have lost 10 pounds. This time I really think I’m ready. Weight Watchers always says that you can have whatever you want as long as you eat it the right way, meaning portion it out, stay in your points, etc. Last night I really wanted Dairy Queen, so I got a medium cup with rainbow sprinkle. I feel so upset with myself now, but I didn’t let that steer me out of the way. I think the hardest thing for me on this journey of weight loss is the inspiration, I get let down very easily. I can’t wait to dig into one of your recipes!

    Elizabeth

  32. Aimee

    Hey!
I’m trying to make some lifestyle changes. I recently gained an unwanted 10 pounds and I’m going to nip it in the bud before it get’s worse .Could you give me some tips on how I can lose 15 pounds in 6 months? I know thats a huge time frame but its because I really want it to stick. I already eat pretty healthily so I think its just portion sizes that got me gaining weight, or eating out of boredom. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

  33. Kathy Di Bene

What a delightful read and an awesom way to present recipes. I am so glad I found your site. Thank you for all your hard work Kathy.

  34. Marigold

    Hi Andrea!

I just love you blog. You seem to be glowing in all your pictures. Can I ask you what your makeup regime is? Your complexion is flawless! I want whatever blush you are using!!!

    Thanks,

  35. Shellie

    Andrea,

I came to your blog through a friend sharing a s’mores brownie recipe you posted a few months ago, which I made, and then I died.

I didn’t know anything about your weight loss, your Women’s World cover, or article. The more I read, the more I fall in love. With the recipes, your story, your writing, your silly pictures, your purple socks (I have my own favorite pair).

In short, I think you’re amazing. Weird to say, maybe, but true. Thank you, truly.

You are inspiring and easy to relate to. Please keep doing what you’re doing.

    Best,
    Shellie

  36. Cynthia

    Andrea,

Quick note to say I have loss 17 pounds since first seeing you on the front of Women’s World. Your article caught my eye, I brought home the magazine and read about you.
It was just what I needed. I have 40 more pounds to go and I WILL do it and I WILL keep it off this time!
    I have found my way.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. You will never know how much you helped me. God is smiling on you!

    Hi Andrea!

You’ve just received a Stylish Blogger award from Fit Foodista. I came upon your blog purely by chance and have been enjoying it for a few months now. When I received the award, you were one of the first I thought to pass it along to!

If you’re interested in participating, simply visit Fit Foodista.com and read all about it. If not – best of luck to you and I’ll look forward to more great recipes :)

    Best,
    Michele

  40. Allison

I love your site!! I lost a lot of weight several years ago. The hardest part after was learning to enjoy food again without worrying about what it did to my body. It was hard to come to a happy medium between how I was eating before and how I did when I lost weight. I think I finally have, and now I have seen your site. This has shown me that I’m not the only one who had to learn to enjoy food again but in a way completely different from when I was heavier.

  41. RD

I am a Registered Dietitian and came across your blog because a client of mine mentioned some vegan chocolate muffins she made and I asked her if she would bring in the recipe next time she came. She mentioned your blog and today I checked it out and LOVE it! I also loved reading your Journey and healthy approach to eating.

  42. Beth Darden

do you have any before and after pictures of yourself somewhere? What an inspiring story! Thank you for sharing!

  43. Lisa R.

    Hi Andrea,

I am a new reader and so far I LOVE your blog! So insprational! Congrats on your amazing weight loss.

I actually have a question? DO you happen to have a scone recipe? I just tried making a “healthy” whole wheat oatmeal mixed berry scone and it was not good. Very bland..

I was wondering if you could help me?

    Thank you so much!

    1. Can You Stay for Dinner

Hi Lisa! So sorry for the delay in getting back to you!! I don’t have a scone recipe! Surprisingly, that may be the one thing I haven’t baked much of! I’ll let you know if I do, though :)

      1. Frieda

And it is soooo great that you reply to your readers. so many bloggers are lazy when it comes to that :) you are becoming my new favourite blogger for sure :)

  44. bubbleandteas

    Hi There,

I just recently came across your blog and love it! Your recipes are great and your sense of humor is similar to mine so I think you’re hilarious. I am in the beginning stages of starting my own blog, capturing various parts of life. Some of it will most likely include cooking and baking trials and errors (mainly trials) and I was wondering if you had an issue with me trying some of your recipes, documenting and crediting your blog as my reference? I am new to this blogging world and want to ensure I am following the right protocol :)

    Thanks!

  45. Michelle Zonis

I recently discovered your blog, and since then have been toying with your recipes, and I am SO impressed. How you manage to cook so well, and healthily too!? I’m amazed. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, and keep it up!

  46. Ann

I think I love you! :) Your recipes are fabulous, found a picture of your petite lasagna on pinterest and have been drooling over your other recipes. Can’t wait to check out the rest!

  47. Antionette

    Hello Andrea,

I’m fairly new to visiting your site and I can’t stop LOL!!! I love the beautiful pictures of your recipes and your stories. I think your story touches so many of us because we’ve all been there and know the mental struggle.

Myself, being a fellow sugaraholic…..I’m so in awe of how you’re able to incorporate your favorite sweets/desserts into your daily eating regimen yet still remain so healthy and fit.

Please, if you don’t mind, could you share just a bit on how you were able to overcome this. I’ve read your blogs about how you finally realized it was the amount of the food you were missing. I love to eat sweets in bulk too and I have the hardest time allowing myself one cupcake, one cookie, etc….a day because I simply can’t stop. Then, the ole’, typical, negative thoughts start rolling in my head saying, “well, you’ve screwed up another meal, another day, so might as well just scuff down the rest of those cupcakes now.”

How, were you able to “allow” (if you will) yourself to incorporate these dieters forbidden foods back into your daily eating regimen and have it work so wonderfully for you?

Also, do you allow yourself come caloric deficit when you eat them to help balance things out?

Thank you for sharing so many wonderful, tips and ideas and more importantly, your story. You look fantastic!

  48. Antionette

    Hello Andrea,

I’m rather new to your site and I love it—can’t stop reading!!!

I too am a fellow sweet lover. My problem is that I would love to put back some of my sweet favorites into my eating plan but I can’t seem to stop and just one. I can’t have just one cookie, cupcake, etc. without making it an all out sweet fest. I’ve read your blog regarding your realization that it was more about the quantity you missed when you took out your favorite desserts. I can understand that. How were you able to incorporate the sweet things you love so much back into your eating plan while still maintaining your incredible weight loss?

I feel I would be more successful at my weight loss if I wouldn’t always feel the love/hate relationship I have with food. I too am either dieting or binging—I so relate.

Thanks for sharing your stories, tips, and laughter with us.

Hi Antionette! First, thank you! It’s really hard getting to the point where you can just eat one of something, but you just…do it. And do it again. And again. If you just trust yourself and realize that you’re not a monster, you’re not a raging maniac who will eat until you can’t eat anymore (not all the time anyway), then you will begin to realize you can be trusted with the food you love. Try it once. See how you feel. Know that the only way to live life is this way, and then make it a habit and reinforce how good it feels to eat what you crave, to eat what you love, but in a loving way. I hope this helps :)

    Hi Andrea,

I happened upon your site because I was looking for a recipe for tie dyed cupcakes for my 11 year old daughter. Well, I not only found that but found wonderful inspiration! I am trying to lose 100 lbs. I am a Mother of a 27 year old son, 26 year old daughter, 11 year old daughter and two grandaughters 5 and 4. I work nights and am always sleep deprived. I get really discouraged, but I will be checking back on your site quite often for the inspiration I need. I really love how you talk about a relationship with food, many diets tell you what you can and cannot eat, bad/good. I have always felt this un-natural. I too have always loved to cook, wonderful memories with my Mom and making memories with my children and grandchildren in the kitchen. Thank-you so much for your posts, I really think I can do this now that I have found your site.

  50. Kimberlee

    Hello Andrea!

I lurk at a lot of recipe blogs but I just had to post a comment on yours. I LOVE it, especially because I live in Seattle too! I want to thank you for taking the time to share your recipes with us. I love finding recipes where people post step-by-step instructions with high quality photos! I have been looking to find delicious recipe options that are not only low-fat but that fit within my grocery budget which you have now provided to me. Congratulations on your weight loss, you look AMAZING! Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your many talents. :)

  51. Elsie

    Hello Andrea!

Thank you so much for your blog. You’re story is such an inspiration and your recipes are very helpful. I really wanted to ask your advice on how I can motivate myself to start exercising and eat better. I feel that sometimes my life has just been passing by. Help!!!!

  52. Becky

    Love your sight.

I notice that your baked goods are not whole wheat this, egg white that. Do you try eat whole flour or do you find that eating this in their most delicious form is a way you stay balanced?

  53. Katie

    Hi Andrea,

I’ve become slightly (just.slightly) addicted to your blog recently. Go figure I stumbled upon it by looking for a tye dye cupcake recipe. BAM! there is your glorious picture of the perfect TD cupcake. Which I might add went over amazingly at my 4-year-old’s birthday party. Anyway…the reason I’m writing you ask…well I would like to know if you would share the peanut butter banana oatmeal you’ve mentioned during your hunger challenge.

Thanks, in advance, b/c I’m sure you will share it! ;)

  54. SPMandM

So delightful! I have never struggled with weight really, at least no more than every other woman on the planet who is never really satisfied. Even so, I still struggle with the gym :( I recently tried running and agree, it is no fun. As I approach my, ahem, 40’s, I really want to find something that is enjoyable too. Thank you for the motivation. I have a really great sweet potato, black bean enchilada recipe, that you would like I think! Congratulations on your finding peace within yourself :) that’s the hardest thing of all…

  55. Lauren Woodham

Hi, Andrea! I came across your page yesterday, and I am completely amazed at your strength and success! Your story reminds me so much of myself…but I haven’t begun my weight loss journey yet. I have always had a bit of a battle with my weight, but I was never what I would consider big by any means. I kept myself busy in high school playing sports and dancing, so I never noticed any of the extra calories. I lived at home my first 2 years of college. My mom is a health-nut and workout freak, so living and eating at home helped me watch my weight. I moved out my junior year of college and the problems started. I ate what I wanted when I wanted, I stayed out late, I partied. Now, 5 years later, I’m mourning the loss of that 140 pound girl who was always happy and outgoing. Now, I sit here at 230 absolutely heartbroken that I have let myself get to this point. I understand the depression that comes with the weight. I understand the eating because you’re upset that you keep eating. I understand the comfort that only that piece of cake/cookie/pie/candy/french fries/chips can bring. I get it…but I don’t. I am having such a hard time breaking out of this shell that I’ve been living in for the past 5 years. It’s gotten so bad that I avoid people I was friends with in high school and college just so they won’t see what I look like now. I think, “I was a beauty queen in high school…what in the world would they think of me now?” And it hurts having to hide. But it also hurts to have to face it. Food is without a doubt my kryptonite, my addiction, my betrothed. Food has always been a central fixation in my life (even though my mother is neurotic about it). Family gatherings are feasts. Some of my best memories are of baking with my grandma when I was a little girl. Pancakes and bacon that my daddy cooked every Saturday morning. It’s hard to let it go. You and your journey give me hope. Looking at your pictures and reading about where you started and where you are now shows me it is possible without having to kill myself to do it. It’s difficult reading blogs or magazine articles about this kind of thing and the people writing have never had this type of struggle. They have no idea what it’s like to be in this body. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting your journey out there for those of us who are looking for inspiration and motivation from someone who’s actually been there.

  56. Kacie

    Dear Andrea,

Let me start by saying, thank you! I am currently going on 21 years old, female, 5’7″ and my highest was 284 lbs, two weeks ago. My life has never been steady, I never had the choice of thing to eat because we had so little money that I couldn’t be picky. I just got into that habit. But now that I have the money, I’ve spent the last two weeks eating healthier. And while I was starting to see some small weight loss, that’s when I ran across your blog. I never thought I’d get over the 200 lb mark. And when I did, I was devastated. Then once it kept climbing, I never thought I would lose weight, or find a motivation to do so. When I read your story… I felt like I finally found someone who understands. Your height and starting weight was relatively close to mine, you were the same age, and you did it. I despise running, I have asthma because as a child my mother smoked around me all the time. So running only makes me feel like I’m going to collapse. But I’ve began walking. So far, 2 miles everyday. It’s only been a couple of days, but from 2 weeks ago, I’ve lost nearly 10 lbs, and I’m starting to see that if I stick to this, if I continue, I’ll just see more results. Thank you, so freaking much. I have been battling with myself for the last 2-3 years to find some sort of motivation to start the weight loss. And you were it. You’re amazing! (By the way, I was even more in awe that you’re in Seattle, WA. I was born in Spokane, lived in Seattle for about a year, and now am located in the Tri Cities.) :)

    Hi Andrea,

My name is Sheri Larsen. I am a Canadian Multimedia Expressionist Artist. I added your blog to my links list. http://sheriburhoe.blogspot.com/

Lovely recipes, and photos. I was reading a bit about your struggle with losing weight. I think that it is great that you have shared that here. You seem like a wonderful person, have a good healthy sense of humor, and obviously a talent for creating with food.

I look forward to following your blog…

    Cheers,
    Sheri

  58. Katie

    Andrea,
I just found your blog today and I have to say you are speaking to my soul. I have been overweight my whole life, 10 lbs 10 oz at birth (my mom is amazing to have squeezed me out!). In 2001 at 269 lbs standing 5’6″ I started on my weight loss journey and over the next few years lost a little over 125 lbs. However I still struggle to find peace with my body and overeating and live in fear I will gain all the weight back. You are an inspiration for me to continue to trust myself and my body and love the person I am. I look forward reading your posts as I find my own path to a happy me.

  59. Eric

For your Chocolate chip cookies have you ever tried to split the batch and do 1/2 without letting the dough sit in the fridge? Im planning to make these tomorrow for guests, but I just cant see decing to make cookies and then having to wait 2 days for them or planning 2 days in advance.

  60. Lisa

I just followed a link last night from Flavor Mag (in Virginia) on FB to Foodista to your blogsite. So wonderful! This morning I was catching up with The Rumpus.net (SF) and read this interview with Aimee Bender, author of, most recently, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake…. and I thought you would love it, so here’s the link:

    http://therumpus.net/2011/04/the-rumpus-interview-with-aimee-bender/

Enjoy, and have a happy, chocolatey, blessed Easter!

  61. Sara Beth

Hi Andrea! I recently recreated (in a way) your tie-dyed cupcake recipe and they turned out fantastic. I was wondering if you would let me add a link to your recipe when I mention it on my blog? I want to make sure you get full credit for the recipe and inspiration!

      1. Sara Beth

Hi Andrea, thanks so much for letting me post your link for the Rainbow Tie Dyed Cupcakes! You can see my post at notetoselfexperience.com

You made my day! I was sent your blog from a friend. Being one who has worked in the food publishing world and am currently in the marketing field of an architectural firm, I am so envious of your job. I would like to call myself a foodie who de-stresses by cooking and baking. It’s a good thing I enjoy working out because desserts are my favorite. I love reading your posts and the photography is top notch.

Trying the cinnamon rolls this weekend, I’ll let you know how they go. Thanks for sharing.

  63. Ellen @ Black & White & Loved All Over

Had a blog post idea for you — or at least a question. I’ve heard you say several times that you love food. I totally get that. I think most of us do. But what is it about COOKING that you love so much? Because you could order in or go out or dethaw some good food but what is it about preparing it and cooking it that you love? I struggle with enjoying to cook so I’m curious about this.

  64. Anna

Hi! I just found your website and I have to say I love it!! I’ve got one guestion, which you might have already answered but your photos you post on your blog are beautiful photos! What kind of camera do you use? :)

  65. Johnny

I pray that at least a few of your questions where answered in your latest series about writing. You have touched us all in a way I’m sure even you couldn’t have imagined. If I where in your shoes (they’d be flatened by now) I would be looking at the screen every day and saying WOW WHAT DID I START HERE!!!!

I can’t imagine putting in a full days work and then coming home to write in this blog. But that’s why you do it and I don’t. I hope you save a little time for your relationship with Daniel. He sounds like He’s worth it.

Anyway, I just wanted to say ONE MORE TIME that I really value this blog and, dare I say…the friendship!
If you never wrote another thing again I would be able to look back at this past year and say that I met a friend and shared a lot which brought me pleasure, fullness, sadness, joy and yes love of life.

I KNOW your future will be a bright one, your talent couldn’t help but take you places that you couldn’t have imagined. Hopefully you have come to peace with yourself and have unlocked that Celebrity inside of you. I want some day, not to long in the future, to be able to say (pointing to the screen) I knew her before she became famous! Don’t laugh, that is exactely what is going to happen!!!!

    Thanks! :)

  66. Betsy

Andrea, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. Your wit, frankness and overall quirk is a lovely way to start each day. So thanks. I’ve tried a couple of the recipes and shared them with family and friends–everyone appears to be fans, so likewise thanks. Reading your writing gives me the sense that we’d get along famously, so if you ever find yourself in Lansing, MI, *drop me a line.
*I assure you I am not a creeper.

  67. Heather

    Hello Andrea,

I just happened upon your blog (on StumbleUpon, no less) and instantly fell in LOVE with your recipes! I have switched entirely to what I call “God” foods (i.e. foods that are fresh from the ground, or the creatures that eat the food fresh from the ground! Nothing pre-boxed etc.) in the last two years and after loosing 30 lbs I’ve managed to get my kids to like eating that way too. So.. since you seem to have a very devoted following, I wanted to pass along a “sort of” recipe for Brussel sprouts that I’ve been making for about a year now, which helped me convince MANY self proclaimed “Sprout Haters” to convert! I’ll do anything to convince someone who doesn’t like veggies to at least pick ONE that they’ll eat. This one seems to be an all around Favorite, even with those who HATE the “Martian Heads” (as my mom called them.) I just thought you might like to try them yourself and then pass it along on your blog. i’d love to read that even MORE people have been converted! (It also seems to work similarly with Broccoli) If you already know this trick, then please excuse my ignorance of your catalog of recipes! I’ve only got so much time on the computer after work before my face hits the keyboard zzzzzzzzz!

    1) Find Medium to Large Brussel Sprouts in any quantity, (but be forwarned, they are as hard to quit popping into your mouth as potato chips or french fries!)

2)Cut the Stems off, and peel off the Guard leaves, (usually the first 2 or 3 leaves) as well as cutting off any bad bits.

3)Slice each Sprout in half from Stem to Top

    4) in a ziplock baggie or a mixing bowl, combine:
*Olive Oil – enough to be absorbed by spices with enough left to thoroughly coat sprouts (more can be added later if needed)
    *Lawrys Seasoned Salt
    *Cavanders Greek Seasoning
    *Sea Salt
*Steak Rub of your choice (beware the extra pepper!)
*Pepper (may not be needed if your rub is extra peppery)
    *Itallian Seasoning to taste

***The ammounts of spices vary each time I make these.(I tend to measure by sight and taste) But they almost always turn out fantastic. Just remember to taste your steak rub to determine if it is too peppery for your liking.***

dump the sprouts onto a baking sheet (preferably with sides so that they dont slide off) and turn them all to face cut side DOWN.

Broil the sprouts JUST long enough for the top layer of leaves to start brown or singe. If you broil them too long, that’s okay too, just peel off the burnt leaves (my son loves them that way tho!)

ENJOY! They are addictive! Be careful! (also VERY good the next day cold!)

  68. Melissa

Hi Andrea – I just discovered your blog a couple weeks ago and I love it! I find myself looking forward to it each day, like I would a tasty piece of chocolate.

I too lost quite a but of weight (don’t know the exact number because I stopped weighing myself as I grew heavier) but looking at your before pictures we could have been sisters.

I had a baby about 19 months ago and am now pregnant with my 2nd and am struggling with my body image again. I didn’t lose every pound of “baby weight” but was close to my happy place before I got pregnant. I know it’s the gaining, even though totally justified, necessary and reasonable, that just makes me scared that I’ll become the cute “chubby” girl again. I seem to be losing trust in myself.

Just wondering if you’ve had those moments and if you have any tips on how to battle through them. I started reading Geneen Roths books and already think she will be a huge help.

Thanks for all of your sharing, beautiful way with words and delicious recipes. I cozied up with your tuna casserole this weekend and it was fabulous!

  69. Linda

Girl! You are something! I found you because of your post “The Sweetest Buzz” – I am a bee keeper in Texas and old enough to be your mother. I just finished reading every page on your blog and smiled and cried through the entire blog. Good for you figuring out how to be healthy and beautiful all at the same time. Overcoming the struggles you have will serve you well for the rest of your life – what a treasure! I’ll be bookmarking you in my favorites as your photos and recipes look fabulous. Check out my blog – I’m new at this but love every minute of it and I am especially adoring of my bees – they are such a necessity to our lives and I am proud to own 4 hives. Nice to meet you!

  70. Johnny

By the way it was the smiling photo on ‘Womans World” magazine that brought me to read your story. I am so very, very glad that I saw that magazine on the table. It has meant more to me each day than I could have ever possibly imagined.

    THANKS! :)

  71. Sarah

    Hi Andie,

I discovered your blog about 2 months ago and have devoured your posts and have tried a few of your recipies (tuna burgers just yesterday-Yum). Anyhow you’ve got quite an archive to read. I’ve been clicking the older entries link, but I only make it so far. Is there an easier way to read the older posts? I have searched through the recipe link. Are you considering an archive list of old posts? Newbies like myself would appreciate it! Keep on writing lady your posts are as inspirational as they are entertaining!

    Sarah

  72. Kyla

    Hi Andrea,

You website is GREAT! I was trying to sign up to receive your posts via email, but alas, when I click the link I get “nathan!”

Thanks for your testimony, it inspires.

    Kyla

  73. Adrienne

    Hi, Andrea,

I’ve been enjoying your website for a number of months now, and all of a sudden I stopped receiving a daily email notifying me of a new post. At first I thought you were no longer blogging, so I went to your website and….there you were! How do I once again start getting the notices each time there’s a new one?

I have also been meaning to write to you to let you know that I have tried several of your recipes on your grandfather. One I particularly remember is your Beef Stew. It was delicious and we both enjoyed it so much. (Much better than Dinty Moore, by the way!) He is so very proud of you! He keeps a copy of the October “Woman’s World” with your picture on the cover on his coffee table so he can rave about you to everyone who comes in. I almost feel like I know you! I hope some day we can meet. In the meantime, I will continue to check on your recipes every day.

Your weight loss is an inspiration to me. I have been a lifetime member of Weight Watchers for many, many years. Unfortunately, I stray alot and have to keep coming back. I figure if you can do it, so can I, so I will keep on trying.

  74. sarah

Thanks for your repines to my comment….made me tear up in my cube (i blamed it on allergies) So I’d love a blogroll…what blogs do you like? thought about you while cuddling with my girl this AM. knowing that i can make the relationship with her i want a reality.
    xoxo

  75. Michele

I’m not sure why, but I stopped receiving your blog posts. Can you PLEASE add me back in as an email subscriber?

  76. Jane Tierney

When ever I feel like ditching weight watchers I remember you got going from them. How did you know when you were ready to go on and how did you keep going without the structure! I love your blog!!

  77. Pooja

Hi! Your story is really incredible. I am glad I got to see your post in http://www.lifeofsomethingnew.com. I like how you are honest and simple with your writing. I love food. And I consider weight loss now and then. I wish I could follow your post through blogger. Is it possible? I mean along with emails?

  78. Dolores Neilson

    Andrea…

Thank you. For your courage. Your insights. And the energy, time and emotional investment into this blog helping others. I’ve been wanting to do something similar for a long time. I would do anything to spare someone the pain I have experienced…the pain of being out of control. Then I find you…your honesty, your recipes, your voice. Doing it better than I ever could. God bless you for touching others…and me. Dolores

i stumbled across your blog (literally, from stumbleupon) and have been browsing through it all afternoon! i just finished my freshman year of college and am trying to lose the weight dining halls and vending machines seem to have packed onto my hips. thank you for your insightful posts and awesome recipes – it is so refreshing and motivating! especially the “what I miss from 135 lbs ago”. anyway, keep writing and creating! fyi, i’m in bangkok right now, so wonton sheets are very easy to find :)

Just tried your chicken cordon bleu. It was a hit! thank you. Also forwarded your website to my husband who is a writer because I know he will like the way you write!

I just came across your blog today via StumbleUpon and I spent hours looking through it & reading your story. You are such a beautiful, inspirational person and all of your recipes look amazing! Thank-you for having such a wonderful blog and sharing your experience. It is so genuine and well-written–definitely a breath of fresh air!

  82. Christine

After only reading a few scant pieces of your brilliance put to pixels, I feel like there’s only one thing I can say.

    You’re beautiful.

  83. Elizabeth

I just felt moved to tell you that your writing gives me chills. I’m still getting to know you by reading your stories. I’m struck however by how much I like to read your words. And because we all need to be reminded of our gifts from time to time, I wanted to tell you that I think you are a gifted writer. I hope that it serves you however you want it to. Thank you for your stories, your truth and your humor. Reading your site has made my day better and has stirred something in me, some motivation to make my life what I want it to be while I can. A motivation buried deep. Thank you.

  84. Jody

    Hi!

I stumbled across your blog when I was reading someone else’s blog and she posted a link to one of your recipes. I LOVE your site.

I have lost 145 lbs myself and your blog about maintenance and exercising really struck home with me. I’m a walker too. Then I started looking through the recipes and had to read them all because I enjoyed your commentary so much.

I know you don’t have children yet, but can you do some teenager-friendly dinner recipes? The three biggest things I have learned on this journey are:

    1. My kids are still going to prefer POGOs and Pop-Tarts to anything I serve. My son hisses at anything green and my daughter swears celery and potatoes make her tongue itch)
    2. I get food boredom. A girl can only eat so much Greek Yogurt and Quinoa, ya know?
    3. Even when my body is all healthy, Brussel Sprouts still taste like dog sh!t(or what I envision dog sh!t would taste like.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  85. Janet

Can I just say that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your blog. A girl after my own heart. Thank you for sharing your insights, and your journey through weight loss and healthy living. I have my own 70 pound journey that I am on. I have gotten many great recipes, insights, inspiration and more, so thank you again for sharing. Oh, and by the way, the photography is fantastic!

  86. JacLyn

Hi. :) I just came across your website. I was linked your Petite Lasagnas, which look amazing. :) Anyway, I wanted to let you know your RSS Feed isn’t working. When I click the link, it just sends me to your main page and not the feed page. The comments feed seems to be working, but not the main one. I’d really like to follow you and your delicious creations, so if this gets sorted, please let me know! Thanks. :)

I have never felt more capable of losing the weight I carry until now, now after reading your weight exercise story. Still being at the start of me weight loss and only currently down 5 pounds I run. I can’t even run a lot. But I connect in every part of your experience. Feeling it after a run, feeling like I’m making progress. I connect to your thoughts, thinking I’ll be happier once I lose the weight. I don’t know if happier is possible, I’m in a very loving awesome relationship but the confidence and to be able to stand up without adjusting my close a thousand times, to wear a tank top without a sweater. Those type of thoughts, I wanted to tell you how much you’re exercise history has meant to me to read, it was more than a read it’s a motivation and a lesson. The days I feel like I just can’t run, I can’t handle another foot. I’ll walk. Thank you.

  88. Steve Fernandes

Congratulations on your latest endeavor I know you will do well. I wish I could taste just about everything you make. Say hello to Daniel and enjoy the rest of your summer.

  89. Catherine

I found your blog recently because of your recipes. I then read your story, and started to ball. Your story is incredibly beautiful and inspirational on so many levels. I respect that your story is more than just about losing weight, but about growing as a person. Your blog has reminded me to take life in strides and one step at a time.

  90. Kimberly

    Hello-
I just wanted to let you know that I find your blog very inspiring. I think your story is very inspiring, but what I am most impressed with is your ability to tell a story. You combine a great writing ability with a true talent of making it visually interesting and suprising. Not to mention, you have a great mastery over social media. To say it is a great blog seems like an understatement.
    You really have a gift.
Best of luck with your book.

“I will always know that the grass, though it seems emerald and glowing in that field on the other side, it isn’t. Flowers grow here; they grow over there. As weeds do, too.

But both are wide and they’re open. And I can lie and cry in one and move and spin in the other. Just knowing this: they’re the same field. ”

You should end this with Amen.

I feel like its a prayer I need to memorize and repeat, and repeat, and repeat. Loosing weight is not going to solve my problems my pants may be smaller but I will still be walking through the same problems in a pair of pants…

Thank you for your words. They hit home and you write so eloquently.

    Thank you!

  92. Grace

    Hi!

I just recently found your blog and all I can say is..wow. I am still doing a lot of exploring and reading but, everything you do is so inspiring! You have such a great attitude about everything. You live each day to its fullest and it’s just wonderful. ha. We can all learn a thing or two from you, like to never give up and stay positive! It’s hard for me not to read this blog and smile. Thank you for this, I can’t wait to explore it more.

    :)

  93. Kristin

Hey Andie, I’ve touched bases with you a couple of times… but I’m in the middle of this whole “okay, let’s get this going” thing trying to get back on track (I’m starting WW counting again and trying to get an exercise regiment in place) but while walking down the vitamin aisle at the store found myself at a loss. I’ve been told numerous times that I need to start taking a multi-vitamin but have NO idea as to what I should be looking for. I was curious if you were taking one and if you had any advice for what type I should be looking for?
    Thanks Andie. ;0)

  94. Maureen

I just wanted to let you know that I can’t seem to get your RSS feed to work. I wanted to follow you that way but its not working. For the time being I have subscribed via email but would prefer to be able to use the RSS.

I just wanted to say how much I love your blog! I’ve only just stumbled across it recently and I can’t wait to get cooking. You are such an inspiration! 135 lbs! Wow… I can’t say that I know what it feels like to have to lose that much weight, but I’m currently feeling a bit trapped in my body which has just recently reached it’s highest weight ever… 5’5 and 186 lbs. :/ I joined a community website to track food and exercise and your blog came up in the discussion board. Not only is it helpful to be surrounded by a community of people with similar goals of a healthy life, but it’s so very helpful to have people like you, who have lost the weight and maintained the healthy lifestyle. I’m hoping to lose 45 lbs and I think I can do it with the motivation I’ve gained from blogs like yours! Thank you so much for sharing your story!

    Andie,
It was a pleasure to meet you at IFBC. NOLA. Your story is inspiring to me. My journey has not been a easy one either. Thanks for the inspiration.

  99. Brandi Wilson

I have always loved your recipes and today was the first day I read your “story”. I can’t believe I have not ran across that before. I also read every article about weight loss, read magizines, watch TV shows, I also keep a detailed food journal with workouts. But I am struggling to lose the weight. I lost 60lbs in 1 year. Which is amazing!! And I am so proud of myself. I have at least 50 to go. And for the past 1 1/2 I have maintained my weight but can not lose a pound to save my life. I have tried weight watchers for a change, I have mixed up my workouts, I started running (which has helped me lose inches but not weight), and I keep a food journal. I just recently took my daily calorie intake WAY down to 1100 to 1200 calories/day. And I kept my working out schedule to 4 times a week. I finally started to see a lose, I lost 7lbs in 3 weeks. Then I stopped losing again. It is so frustrating, I am trying so hard. I would love to know if you had any advice to share with me. My workouts are High Intensity workouts, I try to burn between 600-800 calories per workout. I am still over 200lbs and I desperately want to get to my goal weight, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks-Brandi

Hi Andrea, I just found your website today. I have been reading off and on all day. I am struggling to lose 30lbs. I am having trouble getting motivated. I was working out 3 days a week and now I don’t even want to go. All I find myself doing is staying home and eating. I was wondering how you stay motivated. I have 4 children that keep me busy. I feel like I’m stuck here and dont know what to do next.

I found your blog via a link on pinterest, and I must say that I have never felt so inspired to get healthy. I always envisioned a terrifying journey of hours at the gym and a strict diet of salads for the rest of my life in order to lose 10lbs. Thank you for sharing your story! I think that your experience exudes strength in discovering a healthy lifestyle and I am so grateful to have read it! It is nice to hear that even though the journey is tough, it can be done without sacrificing, well, everything! There is such a misconception that someone must give up all foods they love and all time they have in order to be healthy and lose weight.

    Thank you!
    Sara

Is the relationship with Daniel still going strong? Didn’t want to pry but was hoping that you two are still doing this together. :)

  103. Kim Davenport

I just found your blog… while eating some chocolate chip cookies and dunking them in milk. At least the milk is 2%. Been watching my intake for two weeks and today is my “cheat day”. Lost 3 pounds. 27 more to go.

    Great job. Inspiring.

    Kim

  104. Sarah

    Andrea,

First I need to say that I love love love love your blog! I have actually never come across one before where I have felt so included in my reading experience. I am totally charmed and feel like we became fast friends. You just didn’t know yet! So, a major thank you is in order.

Second, you look awesome. I had been at about 160 until senior yr of hs and then gained about 25 lbs (what a good yr i picked, right?). I’m not really sure why? Maybe the stress of venturing out somewhat into the less protected world? There is really no reason that sticks out in my head. Anyhow, I lost 50 lbs the summer before my freshman yr of college and felt great and then would fluctuate 10-15, sometimes 20 lbs and sometimes it is a struggle and sometimes it isn’t.

I am just wondering with all of the super yummy looking food you post (totally running to the local produce market later today), how do you maintain looking so slim?

Could you share what would be a typical food intake day for you?

    Thank you so much,
    Sarah

  105. Melissa

I just wanted to tell you how well written your blog is!! I also have lost a lot of weight (70 lbs.) and I love how you wrote that even when you lose the weight you realize its only weight you lose. That rings so true with me, in fact I didn’t know how to act when I originally lost the weight in 2005, so I went on a rollar coaster of loss and gain until today! I am now back to my goal weight and have become a nutritionist and personal trainer and finally know how to love what I am eating and actually cook wonderful meals :-) Keep up the good work, I will look forward to more wonderful recipes!

    Hi,

I’m Nancy Perkins. I came across canyoustayfordinner.com and am very much impressed with your content. Nowadays, there are a very few websites like yours who give time and effort in providing quality and informative content.

Are you doing the content all by yourself?

    Thanks.

    Nancy Perkins

  107. Ann

Hi, I found your buffalo chicken rolls recipe on Pinterest. It looks to die for! I have a large Christmas party each year, between 40-50 people, and I cook all the food myself. Sooo…I love apps that I can make ahead and freeze. Do you think I make these and freeze them?

  108. Johanna

Thank you. I came across your blog while “stumbling” early Sunday morning. Completely, utterly, sincerely…. Thank you.

  109. Dani

I just stumbled upon your blog, and I wanted to let you know how much you inspired me. I am so impressed by your honesty and wit as much as I am by your commitment to staying healthy. Thanks for sharing your story

  110. Michelle

Hi, just wanted to say your site has been very motivational and helpful…and i was wondering, (this may have already been addressed) were you able to tone up? i mean i’m wondering if it is possible to be tight and toned after losing a lot of weight. what about stretch marks? do they fade? i feel like i will never get rid of the “jigglies” on this weight loss journey. Especially in my lower half.

  111. debbie

omg. im still crying! thank you for the inspiration. part one of what you miss did me in. you are beautiful!. thanx for the motivation!!!!

  112. Amanda V

The RSS feed is not working for me. It hasn’t worked for the past couple of days actually. =\ (I am not subscribed right now, I was trying to subscribe for the first time and it won’t load the RSS feed page)

  113. Sara

I have to say, I know you are busy writing a book but I really miss your old blog. I fear that people will lose interest and your book wont do as well as hoped. I know its hard but the blog got you where you are so maybe try and keep it up? I adore your blog and I miss how it used to be!

  114. Heidi

I just came across your blog from Pinterest, and I have to say, it is the most inspiring, well written blog I’ve read. Ever. I absolutely adore you, your writing style, and am almost giddy with the motivation I’ve just discovered through you.

Two weeks ago, I started my weight loss journey (again) after hitting my highest weight ever. People tug from every side telling me to eat THIS way, or do THAT work out, or I’ll never lose the weight. And all along, I keep thinking to myself what you’ve reiterated here for me-that working out, eating moderately, and losing weight shouldn’t be something you dread, and I shouldn’t have to try and juggle every weight loss rule that’s thrown at me. Anyway, I just went off on a major tangent.

My point is-you’re amazing, and I’m so grateful I stumbled upon your blog. I can’t wait to go back and read the whole thing. Thank you!

  115. krystina

Andi- i have found this great new snack recipie you should try! i made it tonight and its soooo yummy.

Just found your blog. Absolutely beautiful. Your food, writing, feelings, and looks. Thank you for sharing, I found this at the perfect time. I have recently lost 50lbs, and have felt such a struggle in my life. *Almost* wishing I were that fat girl again who didnt have to have such restraint and planning in my life. It is so hard to find a balance. I feel as if I let myself slack a little, I will be right back where I started. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  117. Rachel Youmans

Wow, I am blown away from your blog. You are such an inpspiration to me! I have lost over 70 pounds so far, and I still have 25 more to go. But I have found that walking, yes power walking like a granny in a mall, is my exercise choice. I try to do 3 miles a day, and I take longer walks on the weekends. Running will probably not be my thing, but I am not against jogging. I plan to do a 1/2 marathon in April 2012 so I do plan on jogging some. Thanks for sharing your story, your passion, and your recipes!

  118. Marcie

Just found your blog from Pinterest and I am hooked:) Can you tell me how I can read your blog from the beggining? Is there an easier way than just hitting orevious posts?
    Thanks

  119. Bridget

I am at work reading this and am about in tears. Your story is so moving, so true, so real, and just what I needed to hear today. I have been working 14 hour days and still killing myself to squeeze in a 5-8 mile run 5 days a week……because it is what I think I have to do. About a year and a half ago I started my weight loss journey. In high school I had an eating disorder and at my lowest weight weighed 82 lbs at 5’7. When I got into college, I got treatment, but quickly swung to the other side of the scale weighing 190 lbs. I ADDED A WHOLE NOTHER ME! It was depressing, terrifying, and downright the lowest point in my life. I felt helpless and antisocial trapped in this large body I wasn’t used to. I decided then and there that starving, binging and purging, gorging, and all the other horrible techniques I used to use to lose weight just wouldn’t work any longer…..I had to lose weight the RIGHT way this time, and if that meant that it would take forever, then it would. I was determined from that point on to be healthy: eat healthy, exercise, and just LIVE LIFE, and I figured the weight would come off with time…..and it did! During my weight loss journey, my high school sweetheart, my boyfriend of almost 8 years, who stuck with me through thick and thin (literally and figuratively) proposed to me. It was with the wedding that I felt an instant NEED, not want, BUT NEED to be even thinner. I had already gotten down from 190 to 145 by the time of his proposal, but with the wedding looming, I kicked it into gear more. I started RUNNING instead of my casual work outs. Not just running, but training for races, running half marathons, and going at it 5-7 days a week. I got down to 127 for our wedding which was three months ago, and I still was not happy. Since then I have lost another 7 lbs and stand at 120 at 5’7. I have family that are aware of my past telling me I am getting too thin again and I can feel my Eating Disordered brain kicking back into gear. I know the more weight I lose, the worse my thoughts will get. I feel I have to run every day to maintain this weight I am at, but yet I am no happier now than I was at 130, 145, 150, 170 etc…..

So the point of this long saga is……THANK YOU! Reading this today just makes me realize that I have to live my life, and if living my life and being happy with it is skipping my run for today, it does not mean I am going to gain 10 lbs over night. If eating dessert one night makes me happy, then so be it! If staying home from running to watch movies with my husband that I rarely see makes me happy….then screw it, I’m skipping the run!!

Am I saying I’m going to stop exercising and running? NO!! Because it makes me feel absolutely fantastic about myself…..9 times out of 10 I LOVE running. I am actually very good at races and it is the one thing I’ve found that I’m particularly talented at, winning many races. However, I have now found the confidence to tell myself no to running on occasion if something else will make me happier that particular day….and it is all because of your inspirational story. So once again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You are incredible!!

  120. Cheryl

    Andrea,

I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your blog. You have a wonderful gift with words and you more importantly have a beautiful point of view on life. Your honesty is just fantastic and I love that you don’t hate on the past. It is just so refreshing to hear that message. So thank you! I can’t wait to cook some of your recipes and I will keep my eye out for those books of yours :
    Thanks!
    -Cheryl
PS: Shutter Island is like my favorite movie of 2010. I was obsessed with the noir of it. :)

  121. Lindsay

I just read your History of Exercise (Parts 1 & 2)– I couldn’t identify with you more! I went from 220 to 138 (I’m also 5’9) about 6 or 7 years ago. I kept it off until my first pregnancy, gained 60ish (yikes), was again flooded with all those feelings of helplessness and having to re-lose, but after a year I’ve finally lost all but the last few pounds. My question for you is that you don’t look like you have “skin issues” in your pictures. You look tight and toned. You had mentioned in your blog that you were always heavier (as was I most of my life)…even after all of the weight loss and all of the training sessions, I still have jiggly skin. Any recommendations?

  122. amy s (OH)

I recently found your blog through Pinterest. I am struggling to lose weight. I would say that I have about 30-40 more lbs to go and have been at a standstill because I’m scared. I’m scared of not being able to use my weight as an excuse. I worry about gaining the weight back and I’m not even at my goal yet! I can’t seem to fully pinpoint the reason I started gaining weight after college. I hear to many people, that have lost weight, comment on how overweight someone is or how they shouldn’t be wearing something. I’m always amazed that these people that once struggled too are OK with making fun of overweight people. It’s nice to read a blog about someone who has been there, done that, and yet hasn’t lost their own understanding. Thanks for using what you learned to help others like me.

  123. Cara Acciaioli

    Hey!
You look awesome! I have been struggling with my weight since I was 12, I’m 19 now. I am 5’3 and weigh around 143, and I’m not fat, just overweight and can’t seem to lose the last 10-15lbs that I need to. I work out and don’t eat all the time. I was just wondering if you had any tips to get off the last few pounds?

  124. Korina

I love your story. You look fabulous and i am highly motivated by your blog. I am your age. I have just completed nursing school and feel disgusted at how much weight I gained during school. So, now I have begun to diet and exercise as often as I have the chance. My question is, did you only run? Or did you do other exercises?

  125. Cameron

Funny thing, I saw your picture on pinterest and someone said in the descrption “Need motivation? Check this girls story out.” And since i have become a bit of a health freak in my journey to lose weight and get fit, this has for SURE motivated me. I love reading other peoples storys to healthy living, and you have inspired me to do so many other things!! I’ve lost 38 lbs so far. Thanks so much and keep up the awesome work. I love your story and all that you share. You are truly an insparation to us all. Thanks again!! :)

  126. Carolyn

Hi there. I somehow stumbled upon your blog. I read as much as I could. I cried. I have recently lost weight and I am still getting used to it. I felt the same way about food and exercise. I completely had to change my life and my food choices, which is tough when no one around you is. I can now run for 72 minutes or 10km when I could barely run for 7 minutes before. I am so proud of myself, but I cannot even imagine how far you have come. You are an inspiration. My father was very ill with brain cancer for years and it took a toll on me- my weight and my spirit. After his passing, I did something for myself. It is difficult comparing sizes with three sisters, but I am happy now. I also love reading and trying recipes all of the time- but the best part is making things for everyone else- it is much more enjoyable than eating it myself. I recently read in your blog that you figured you had to exercise strenuously every day to maintain your weight- I thought that until I read what you wrote- I have worked out for over 65minutes each and every single day for over a year and made my friends and families’ schedules revolve around it. It is terrible. I want to change. I hope I can. I hope you realize how much you have touched me. I needed to hear it from someone.

  127. Kelly

Let me just say that you are such an inspiration. I absolutely LOVE your advice, recipes, and stories. You make me want to reach the “After”, to lose the weight and to gain the knowledge & appreciate of having been there. This may seem like a silly question…but what advice would you give to someone who is ready to get started?

  128. Kelly

Wow! You are turly an insperation. Your story is beautiful and inspiraing. I am so happy to see good news storys and for you to share your story with others is very touching. I hope all good things come to you!

    Hello,
just wanted to leave a quick comment to tell you what an inspiration your blog is. Seriously girl, you go. I am in the process of weight loss and I know it is not easy. Do you still use a diet or is it more just portion control? Thanks for putting this out there and for sharing your story!

  130. Kassidy

    Andrea,

You are such an inspiration! I cried when I read this. Being a young woman in today society is so difficult…even mroe so when you might be overweight. Weight loss is such a struggle…and its exhausting. You are truly such an inspiration to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story!!! =]

  131. Melanie

    Andrea,
I am a mother of a 2yr old little girl who looks to me for guidance. I have recently began to realize how out of control my weight has become. I love to make sure that we have home cooked meals in our home. I have glanced at your recipes that you have posted. I love to read your blog. I guess what I wanted to contact you about is… do you have any suggestions for a beginner? It has been so long since I have began to exercise and eat right. I want to start to loose weight, but I am confused as to where I should begin. I would love to lead my daughter to a more healthier life than mine.

  132. amanda

I was going through pintrest when it led me to “what I miss from 135 lbs ago”……I cried because when I go to part two it was everything I think about daily. I’m currently on my way to losing weight, my goal is 100-120 lbs smaller. I’ve gotten 60lbs down but I still feel like I’m just waiting for my life to begin. I found this blog very inspriational because when you made it is when I plan on making it. My goal is by my 21st birthday. I just wanted to say thank you for writing it and letting others know and being able to relate to your weight loss

  133. Ashley

    Andrea,

I was wondering if you ever had any excess skin issues? And if so, how did you deal with them. Thanks!

  134. Sherry Grubelnik

How do I keep up with your comments? Do I sign on for your blog? Thank you, Sherry
PS: I appreciate your sharing… it is most helpful.

  135. Jezelle

Hey! I so totally love your story!!! I am wondering what your skin was like once you lost the weight??? I’m sure you have had others ask but I didn’t see anything about it on here! Thank you for sharing your story in such an honest way!!! Thanks!!!

  136. Rashmi Khatri

With your chicken noodle recipe, do you freeze the remaining for the next week? Also, do you suggest freezing leftovers? Thanks for your inspiration!

  137. Kristi Rimkus

Hi Andrea! I’m the author of Mother Rimmy’s Cooking Light Done Right – a healthy recipe blog I started a few years ago to chronicle my recipe journey to keep off the 40 pounds I lost 15 years ago. I’m a big fan of your blog, and have added you to my Healthy Cooks Club page. I love bloggers who add nutrition information to their recipes. It makes like much easier for those of us tracking calories. Have a good day.

  138. Melany

    Hi there,

My name is Melany and I’m exhausted.

I’m tired of constantly thinking I have to lose weight, why can’t it just go away so I can be that happy bubbly person I know I am.

I found out I’m pregnant with our 4th child a few days ago, I went to my doctor today and he did a few check ups and weighed me. I came home and cried cause I HATED that number on the scale.

I can’t go to the hospital I want to, as according to the BMI I am OBESE! Isn’t that a nasty word! I’m Obese! I’m not sure why I’m writing to you! I just happen to find your site today while playing on Pinterest!

Anyways, You look beautiful, but I have to say, I think you looked beautiful all those pounds ago! Wishing you all the best. I’ll be going back to thinking up ways to lose weight while pregnant and look after my 3 little girls here!

    Take care, Melany

  140. Lauren

    Hi!
I just wanted to say that you truly are an inspiration. I am in the middle of my sophomore year in college and although I have been pretty overweight my entire life it just recently hit me that I need to get this under control. The biggest issue for me has always been over-eating and for the past month I have put my focus on watching my portions and cutting out sugary, fried, and fast foods. My biggest guilty pleasure was soda but that I have actually gone almost two months without drinking :) Getting my eating under control has been terribly difficult because I’ll do well for awhile, then relapse and feel extremely guilty. Would you say that something like Weight Watchers would be a good option? I mostly have my family’s support but a lot of the time they will still buy the unhealthy snack foods and eat whatever they want while I just watch and get discouraged, then eat something bad. I’ve also had a lot of traumatic family events like divorce in 1st grade, then my dad suffered a severe stroke freshman year of high school, and then 2 knee surgeries before I started college so food has always been that comfort area. As I am beginning my journey I hope to look to you for inspiration and you have helped me see that this is something that I can achieve! Thank you so much!!

  141. Natalie

Hi Andie. I saw your blog on Pinterest and was just so curious to see what it was about. I have now been reading it for the last hour and was not able to pull myself away until I read EVERY last word. Thank you SO much for sharing this journey. I, too, have struggled with weight my entire life. It has taken me until I was 25 to really realize that no diet could help me…that I use food to escape…I eat when Im happy, sad, anxious, depressed, etc etc. The “Peace With Food” Section of this blog made me bawl my eyes out..but they were good tears..I was crying because I didnt feel so alone. I will definetly continue to keep up with you!

  142. Bridget

    Hey Andie
I just had to let you know that I am grateful for your blog. I stumbled across it on my usual Sunday night search for motivation before the big Monday diet starts! To my surprise I started reading it and it was as if all my thoughts, fears, and dreams were put into words for me. Your words matched my every feeling and I was able to relate so well. Your story is very inspiring because it is honest and real and it did not occur over night. I am hooked on your writing and will forever be a fan. I hope by next year I can write to you about my success story as well. Thank you for saying what I have struggled to put into words for so long. Congratulations to your amazing success.

  143. Suzanne

I need to make my sweet potato casserole the day before I plan to serve it. Should I cook it and reheat or should I not cook it at all. Maybe I should cook it 3/4 of the alloted time. Can you help me?!

    Thanks, Suzanne

  144. J McClelland

I’m not even sure how I landed on your site but so glad I did. I’m currently pretty hardcore about working out 6-7 days a week (but it’s a bit more like a crazy, guilty- if-i -don’t hobby now). Reading over your stories has me thinking about my own relationship with food and maintaining my weight loss and fitness level.
I’m going to pass this on to my BF who has been struggling with weight issues for the last 20 years. You certainly have given me a new perspective and I hope that this gives her some hope.
    Thanks!

  145. Rebecca

    Dear Andie,

I enjoy your website so much. I read it everyday…. I found it a couple of months ago when my aunt sent me the link in an email and ever since I have been hooked to your courage and strength and determination at losing and keeping it off. So the reason I am writing you is I am needing to get some advice from somebody who lost around the same amount of weight that I need to lose. I am 29 and need to lose 95 pounds. My husband and I would like to have a baby but it is really hard to get pregnant being 95 lbs over weight. I struggle at lunch and when I am having a really bad day dinner tends to be bad then. I am ADDICTED to sweets. Sweets are the enemy to me but I can’t stop eating them. I noticed that you gave up sweets for a year how did you do it. I am hoping that you can give me some advice on how I can gain control of my life and not let food run it. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

    1. admin

      Hi Rebecca!

I absolutely understand. There have been many points in my life where I’ve felt like I’d sooner die than give up sweets. I love them so.
      You can do it, though.
Here’s my advice: Give yourself one sweet a day- preferably dessert after dinner and before bed. This way, you won’t feel like you’re giving them up and you’ll have something to look forward to while eating healthy all day. I always have dessert. Wouldn’t want to try to cut it out. So try to limit yourself to just one per day. And yes, it will be difficult at first. But after a week, you’ll feel stronger for having done it. Hope this helps :)

      Andie

  146. michelle

Wow……today was the day I needed to find your blog. I have been overweight most of my life and never more so since my dad passed away 7 years ago lest week. Not only losing him when I did……it W’s December &holiday season. Food was the band-aid. And not till this week did I realize hope much time had actually passed (it FLEW by) and how much I had gained. And as I am most days I was on PINTEREST and someone had pinned one of your recipes with the tag that you had lost 135 lbs. So here I came to see what it all was about………now my life has changed. Starting right this second. Thank you for being such an inspiration ….. I cant wait to start my new life and be unrestrained from my life.

  147. Merrie

Just curious–it looks like you’re not following calories so much these days. But you had done Weight Watchers and I’m guessing then switched over from points to calorie counting? When you were baking, were you then calculating how many points/calories each cookie or bar or slice was going to be? My relationship with food (cooking, baking, having great taste–oh my, but I love to make a goat cheese tart) and my weight and eating are very much like yours, with maybe some additional difficulties, but I really enjoy that you are not addressing weight loss/maintenance as just choices and behaviors, which often happens and is where Weight Watchers meetings have completely missed the point for this girl. And I would think seeing a nutritionist would be the same way, but your experience didn’t sound like that. I’m looking forward to making your Congo Bars. Nom nom nom.

    1. admin

      Hi Merrie!

Thanks for your comment. No, I don’t count much these days. You’re right- I transitioned from counting points on WW to counting calories- which I just found more freeing for me. When I was baking and on weight watchers, I would calculate the points in one cookie and one bar, yes. But I don’t have that info anymore. I hope you can plug the ingredients into an online recipe calculator and then break it down.
Yes, it’s hard when the meetings at WW seemed too prescriptive, too superficial. I find it’s the emotional piece that means more. But, that is often hard in a big group setting, and not all people want what you and I do :)

      Thanks again!

      Andie

  148. Amy

I love your blog! It is inspiring and at the same time really fun to read! I would love to get the RSS feed, but it keeps saying you have some sort of redirect loop happening. Any suggestions?

Very interesting blog! Your story is quite inspiring – especially your approach to exercise. My grandparents are in their 80s and are healthy and active. They didn’t “workout” a single day in their lives…they just kept moving by doing housework and walking. In the meantime, their children (including my mother), who played sports and were runners, have had all sorts of joint problems and hip replacements….doesn’t take a genius to figure out which method of movement is healthier!!

  150. Debbie

Hi Andie! I recently found your blog on Pinterest and I love it. I’m wondering if there is a way to start from the beginning without scrolling through each page and hitting previous posts? I love all of your recipes. Thanks!!

  151. Courtney

Hey! I am kinda in the same situation as you were in the beginning, and I was wondering how you dealt with the whole eating food in college thing. There aren’t many great choices, especially for someone on a meal plan, so I was wondering if you have any tips for someone looking to change their life. I plan on a study abroad in Australia in July, and I need to get in shape, since we’ll be climbing mountains. If this doesn’t get me motivated, I don’t know what will.

  152. Danielle :)

Just SO glad I came across your blog. We have almost the same starting measurements and I am just starting to lose it. I’m in a different point in life than you are, but as a stay.at.home.mom. I’m hoping it will be easier. I LOVE that you love food and incorporate the recipes in your blog. We are foodies! And we’re lazy. So that will be my biggest obstacle. Looking forward to this journey. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

  153. Julie

So many others have said it but you really are an inspiration. I have another 50 pounds or so to go and reading this helps me to get moving and stay on track. I have yo-yo dieted and been overweight since second grade (that is as far back as I can remember). Any time I get close to achieving the larger goal I set for myself I seem to fall off the wagon-so to speak. In your initial quest to lost the weight how did you maintain your focus and drive? You indicated you didn’t really deal with the emotional aspect of it until later. Which, by the way, really hit home with me. Finally-someone is able to articulate what I feel-or not-as the case may be. I long to be thin and healthy. I am just so afraid…of failing. Another question-what salad dressing do you use? Sorry if you have addressed this, I haven’t gotten through your entire site but I love to visit daily!
    THANK YOU!
    Julie

  154. Ellen

    Dear Andie,
Congratulations on a fantastic blog and your book deal with Folio management!
I find your words so refreshingly candid. It is so lovely to hear someone speak so gut wrenchingly honest about their emotional journey with food. But your site is so filled with joy. It is so beautiful and fun that you remind us all that by finding our best self we make the world a better place. Your loss has been the world’s GAIN! Thank you.

  155. Shelly

You have gained 2 new followers! Thank you so much for the inspiration and healthy recipes & ideas that you share. Thank you for being willing to share your struggles & success! I love how honest & open you are..a REAL person :-)

  156. Julie

Clarification question for you: What did you eat when you lost the 135 pounds? Did you eat what you are eating now or did you follow something different? I know you went to Weight Watchers for a bit but I was wondering what beyond that.
    Thanks!

    1. Andie

      Hey Julie!
I followed weight watchers for the first 6 months, then transitioned into calorie counting- about 1500/day. I found that calorie counting felt more freeing than the point system. Hope this helps :)

      Andie

      1. Julie

        Andi,
Thanks so much for your response.Your response indicates to me that you did not deprive yourself. I have been following a “candida free” diet and this has helped me to drop weight. I feel deprived, though I have still been successful. Now I am scared to begin incorporating other foods into my diet. Any suggestions?
        Thank you SO much!!!

  157. Emily T

I just found this blog off of Pintrest and I wanted to say that I spent an hour on here last night reading about your journey. I’ve tried and failed so many times to lose the weight. I can’t even bear to get on a scale anymore. I know I’m creeping closer to 300 lbs and I don’t want that. What I want is to take that first step that you did. Reading your blog about your relationship with food has really helped.

So thank you. From one foodie to another. I think its time to try again. And I have you to thank for the motivation and kind words to take that first step towards a better life.

    -Emily

  158. Meg

I just started following your blog and I’m fairly certain that we should be be BFFs.

    We both love food.
You lost weight. I am losing weight.
    We both have brown hair.

I mean the list could go on and on.

Thank-you for being honest with the world. Can’t wait to continue on my journey while reading along with yours!

  159. Danielle Bachman

    Hey Andrea,
I am new to your site, learn of u thru Pintrest. I spend literally an hour a day looking thru your site, printing recipes etc. I myself have always been bigger than my class mates. Now after 28 years being big, I am ready to be thin and wear the cute clothes. I am not a big meal eater, never have been. Snacking is my thing. I call it grazing. I graze everything in my cabinets, including the choc. Chips in the freezer. Do u have any tips for stopping or atleast slowing the snacking? I know I am hungry, just bored!! You would think with a 3yr old i wouldnt be!!
    Thanks!!
    Danielle
    ps..keep up the good work

    1. Danielle Bachman

I meant to say…”I know I am NOT hungry, just bored”
      Sorry stupid auto correct!!
      Danielle

  160. Sandy Smith

Thank you for inspiring me to not give up! I am a bit older than you, but I have learned from your journey. Thank you for sharing.
I also wanted to let you know that I mentioned you in my brand-new blog (mymidlifemakeover.wordpress.com)and linked to your blog, so hopefully some others will be able to experience your encouragement and optimism. Thanks again.

  161. Melinda

Hi Andrea! I left a warm fuzzy comment on your recipe for the Buffalo Chicken Tenders. Love them! I had to share with you though, with 6 kids pan frying them meant me standing over the stove for 20 minutes, so I baked them at 400F for 5 min., just until they started to get crispy. Pulled them out, quickly dipped them, then put them back in the oven for a few minutes. Worked beautifully!

  162. Jackie

    You are such an inspiration!

I am a college student who recently transferred from IL to Colorado for school. The first quarter was really tough. I didn’t know anyone, alone in a new city, trying to make friends at school.. I got lazy, ate when I was bored.. and now I regret it.

It’s a new year, new start. And I just joined the gym across the street from my apartment complex. I think doing all the free classes they offer will help me have fun working out while meeting new people.

However, I was curious.. what do you think is the best cardio machine to help lose weight? I really want to tackle the elliptical machine, but the articles online are making me confused with opinions concerning whether they help you lose or “bulk” up.

I have 3 months until I see my family again. And I love eating healthy.. I just have to learn and stick to portion sizes.

I hope to see results by the time my mom picks me up from the airport :) It’d be my dream to see her be proud of my accomplishment.

  163. Kim

    Hi Andrea,
I have recently stumbled across your blog and… I LOVE it! I am in the middle of my weight loss journey (48 lbs gone so far) and I am really enjoying not only your recipe ideas but also the way that you don’t look at food as the enemy but as a beautiful friend that you get to enjoy in a healthy way! I have started to make the roasted broccoli and….oh my gosh….I LOVE it! I didn’t know it could taste so good. I am starting to realize how good veggies are when they are roasted. I was wondering if you roast other veggies and would love to read and “see” how you do them. I’ve tried beets and other winter vegetables before but I don’t think I am doing it right. I enjoy seeing the step by step process you do when you make your food…not only are the pictures beautiful but it also helps me to follow what you are doing a bit better than if I was just reading it. Thank you so much for your inspiration….you are an amazing writer and I look forward to following your blog! :0)

  164. Nicole Payne

Andrea… I just found your blog, and I can’t tell you how I’ve sat here and literally laughed out loud while having tears rolling down my face.
A little over a year ago, I was within 10 lbs of my goal weight, and by making the choice that I was going to just let it all go and “enjoy myself” since my husband was coming home from a 6 month deployment (and I knew we would be eating out ALOT and celebrating once he got home). Today, I sit here having gained back every pound I’d lost (42 to be exact), along with another 20.
So with the new year I decided (as I do every year) that I need to get ahold of myself, and start eating better, and start feeding my family better. I’d come to accept that I was going to have whiny children and an angry husband since the only way I could comprehend how to get out out-of-control eating under control was to force feed them salads and to never again mention the words chocolate, butter, or creamy goodness. I was becoming bitter the more I thought about it.
But in stumbling across your blog, your story, and your honesty…I’ve realized that I can do this and that it’s going to be “okay.” Your section ‘What I Miss From 135lbs Ago’ is literally what I feel, what I fear, what I know I’ll miss. Food has been my best friend my entire life, and there is actually a relief in knowing I’m not the only one who misses so many aspects of it.
So I just wanted to say “Thank you” for inspiring me to keep at it, to keep trying, to not give up, and to continue to look to your site for what I CAN become!!

  165. Andrea

Hi Andie, I just want to say you really are a great inspiration for anyone who wants to lose weight, I only had to lose about 25lbs, but you really tell people the right stuff with saying you don’t have to give up any foods!!! The key is moderation and moving!
I feel people think they will never be able to eat pizza again, and I have to say I eat my pizza probaly twice a week (homemade of course) also my dark chocolate. I try to save for the weekend special treats and junk foods. Keep helping people on losing weight and I tell everyone to read your story if they have weight they want to lose. Your are a true person. Thank you for helping people :)

  166. Micha

Just came upon your blog today and wanted to say how much I admire you and your writing! Usually I skim food blogs for mouthwatering photos and good sounding recipes, but I found myself reading every single post of yours I clicked on. As someone who loves to write (especially about food), your blog is so inspirational! And I love your attitude of allowing yourself to eat what you enjoy and not feel guilty about it. Balance and moderation. It’s taken me so long to realize this is the most sustainable way to live healthy!
    You are awesome.
    -Micha

  167. Corrin

    Andie,

Your story is an amazing testimony of how to find the beauty in yourself, regardless of where in life you are, but also inspires to keep on doing things you love to maybe help you find the weight and body you want. Middle and high school (forever ago. i feel. haha. i’m 23) was all about show choir for me. i lived it. and looking back on pictures, i see it did help me to maintain weight, even though i was still considered heavy. i’m pretty much the same weight as when you started your journey and i recently started looking up youtube videos about zumba. i just did 45 minutes of it and it felt like 5 :) felt like i was right back in choir singing and dancing my heart out. i love it :) and i can see myself keeping at it. along with walking with my boyfriend that tells me all the time, without me saying anything, that i am beautiful and that he loves me just the way i am. no matter what :) and that God created me just how i am. That. right there. is love. and motivation to just become healthy. not be skinny like the world wants me. cuz my world (God and Nate) love me for me. :)

Thanks for your honesty and inspiration (and recipes!!)
    -Corrin

  168. Maddie

Hey! I love your blog and I had a question about the theme you used. How did you get your blog title as the header? I used the theme you have for my blog but my blog title was displayed on the left of the blog. Did you custom design your header? And by the way, your blog is awesome you are so inspiring:)

    1. admin

Hi Maddie! Thank you very much :)

I did have a friend make a custom header and then she adjusted the CSS so that it would fit. The good news is that you can do that- you’ll just need friends who know what they’re doing. Wish I knew how to do it and I’d help!

      Andie

  169. Janet

I love your blog and I have to say just how timely your information about maintaining motivation was. I was just thinking about your blog and wondering exactly what the reader was asking. Amazingly, I click over to your blog and there is the question and your answer. Both EXACTLY what I needed. Thank you for your blog and all of the wonderful love you spread among your readers.

  170. David Edwards

First off, you look great. What a beautiful woman. Secondly, do you have your recipes with the calorie content anywhere?
    Thanks

  171. Rachel

This is an amazingly inspiring blog! I’ve been losing weight for a couple months now, and I’m catching myself getting swept up in the destination of my goal weight. I keep telling myself, “you can enjoy life once you are skinny.” I love that you loved life at every weight you were at… it’s honestly refreshing to read that!
Also, you look amazing, but you were always a beautiful girl! Did you ever have to have any sort of skin removal surgery from all the weight loss?

  172. Roberta Schmidt

You,re so beautiful and an inspiration. Google Crossfit. This is a wonderful exercise program. You will never tire of it and they modify it for every skill level. You will meet people who have your same goals.fitness and health. It’s amazing and they have them all over. I’ve been going to one for almost 3 years and haven’t gotten bored at all. My skill levels on so many things have improved. Things I thought I would never be able to do I can now do. You will be working out beside elite athletes and 50y/o+. All who care about fitness. It is so awesome.

  173. Becky

Hello! I am new to your website and think you are FABULOUS!!! I had a quick question? Do you have Nutritional Info for your recipes? I am counting calories & am scared to go over my limit. Thanks so much! You are an inspiration!!!

  174. Jamie

Hello. What a inspiring story. I am right were you were. I have 4 kids and am looking for the great motivation to loose the weight. I lost my parents young to heart issues and I really try to use that to my advantage that I want to be here for my children. But at some point I fall off the wagon. I started a diet after the new year and only lost 3lbs :( I have no time to go to the gym do to having 4 kids, work and the kids activities and fitting time into spend with the husband. So we have the Wii games Wii active and Just Dance 3 that I use for my exercise. I think my problem is, staying on track and focused. And it can be very hard to do so.
I love some of your recipes that you have posted and I will be making some this week.
Thank you for putting out there are truly great story. I think for me to stay more focused I will just read what you did and I think that could help a bit.

  175. Hillary

Hey Andrea! This is a very inspiring story! I’m sitting on the couch now reading it to my mom. We are both very inspired by your story. We both have been struggling with losing weight! I’m 19 years old and I weigh around 155. I’m looking to become healthier and lose weight. I’ve always been very self conscious of myself and I’ve never felt comfortable going off with my friends to the pool or beach. Since we live in FL that’s what they like to do a lot. All of my friends are super skinny and I’ve always wished to be like that! I’ve always felt like people were looking at my size since I was bigger than most of the people we hung out with. I would like to weigh around 130-125. I just recently joined a gym and we’re trying to eat better. It’s hard to find things to eat. I’m very picky and I’m in college so I’m always on the go! Thank you for giving me hope that it is possible!! :-) I hope to one day be confident with my appearance and how I look. I would love to know if you have any tips for me? I’d love to hear from you! You are now considered a role model to me! :-)

  176. Karen

I just found your blog and signed up to follow. 6 years ago I lost 175 pounds and it is slowly creeping back on. The part you wrote about it being a comfort to eat really hit me hard. How did you get past that or did something take its place? I’ve put on about 30 lbs and want to stop doing that now!

  177. Mila

Wow. This is a such a nice change from the typical all about exercising to lose weight. I can totally relate to you and your journey going from 220 to 125 lbs and although I gained some back (currently at 145) I had a question for you. The biggest thing for me to deal with in losing the weight was the extra skin on my thighs and stomach and arms. I was wondering if you had a similar experience and what you did to tighten up those areas from a heavier past.

    Thanks so much!

    -Mila

  178. Janie

Hi Andie, what an inspiring story. I found your blog a few weeks ago and I don’t have to tell you how amazing it is. I’ve already tried a couple of the recipes and am doing another tonight. (the tuna burgers & red crispy potatoes)
I’m diabetic and trying to lose 35 lbs and is hard to come up with some recipes that are good for me, yet something the hubby will eat. Thanks so much. You are encouraging..

  179. Courtney

So glad I clicked this link on Pinterest!! I loved reading your stories and your recipes! I am so excited to try them out soon! Are you still living in Seattle? You should host a meet and greet somewhere where they will allow you to do some cooking! I am only a ferry ride away and would be there! Keep up the great work and I look forward to losing my weight just like you did!

  180. Aimee

You are beautiful! And I loved reading about your journey. My question is after 135…did your skin bounce back? I have about 50 pounds to lose and I’m terrified that the skin on my stomach is going to just hang there!

  181. Maggie

I just want to send a quick “thank you.” You are such an inspiration. For me, I am still scared of that 200 lb girl. Ashamed, even. Your story and your insight is a tremendous eye opener for me. So thank you so much for sharing your story and for waking up in me the notion that I need to stop being so mean to myself!

  182. Monica

Ahhhhh, I have been dreaming of the day I would magically land in Boston for no other reason than to hunt down the magical cake you describe from White’s Bakery. It looks heavenly and your description of it leaves my mouth watering. The day has finally come. My blackberry message indicator light went off and there lied an e-mail. $74 r/t from Chicago to Boston. I knew it was meant to be. Fast forward to the fare being unavailable and have to pay a little bit over $100 more and I was booked. No work Friday or Monday meant it was time to explore a new city and with one major goal in mind: cake! The promise of a new city is a worthwhile endeavor on its own, but your beloved bakery is literally the only thing on my itinerary thus far. They should really be mailing you many many free cakes for the business they are about to receive. Any other suggestions for exploration while in your hometown would be dearly appreciated (I know that you know where all of the good stuff is–food and otherwise).

Enjoy your time in Costa Rica.

  183. Jane Tierney

We followers of you feel as if you are someone we actually know and I understand that is truly not the case – but? Where is Daniel and who is Camille? Did you quit your “day” job? Did I miss a post (I seriously doubt THAT). I am anxiously awaiting your book and I try out many of your recipes. Have a wonderful time!!!!

  184. Janet Bloodworth

just wondering, are these recipes good for people who have sugar diabeties.
    Thanks Janet

    1. Andie

      Hi Janet!

Some of my recipes are good for those with diabetes, but I don’t really watch my sugar so they might be a little high.

      Thanks,
      Andie

    Andie Hi!

I woke up yesterday and just shy of the 11th hour (pm) I was in Heaven! Here’s how I got there…I found pinterest, saw your photo of Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, followed the yellow brick road to your site, recipe, and after my husband and I braved Denver’s snow storm, we had everything we needed to practically save the world! I mean, really, if everyone ate this soup – there would be peace, there just would be. THANK YOU for sharing your time and talents and inspiration! You have reignited a fire in me for preparing & sharing food glorious food! I know it’s only been a day, but you’ll have to trust me – I believe you have provided the ‘fork’ in the road I’ve needed. I’m going to stop settling for ‘convenience’ and reach instead for HEALTH! I have skimmed many parts of your blog & I am just hooked – I look forward to your books & I hope you are able to enjoy yourself in Costa Rica. 2 questions…what kind of camera do you use now to photograph your dishes? And, how can I pre-order the book you have yet to complete? I am already an Andie addict!
May every blessing be yours – and Camille’s!
    Kerry :O)

    1. Andie

      Thank you so much Kerry!
      I use a Canon Rebel T1i with a 35mm lens. I’m pretty happy with it :)
And my book- the first one- a weight loss memoir- comes out in Spring 2013. I’ll let you know about ordering it when we get closer! Thanks again!

      Andie

  186. Wendy

I just want to tell you i am so inspired by your successful weight loss. I am alot older than you, could be your Mother actually, but age is really just a number. I identify with so many of the emotions and the struggle. i am not obese but, believe me not a day, let alone an hour goes by without that horrible war in my head. The one that beats me up how much weight i have gained and feeling like i will never get a handle on relationship with food. I am starting over again and going to use your blog for inspiration. Thank you!

  187. TJ

You have maintained for a long time now, and it seems you have figured out what it takes for you to stay at your Happy/Healthy weight. In the last year I have lost 40 lbs. Now I’m maintaining (whoohoo!). I changed my eating habits and took on walking as a hobby. :) My sister came across your blog and passed it on to me. I continually come back and read your new post. Lots of times I enter random key words in the search bar to pull up old post for inspiration and motivation. My question is, how often do you weigh? Do you weigh to keep yourself on track? Perhaps I have a couple questions. :) Is there an exact number that you like to stay at, or is there a couple of pounds fluctuation? I weigh once a week, about the same time in the morning, wearing the same thing. I have a number that I like to be at. This number works for me. Once in a while it will be a pound or two more. It helps me remember that perhaps I should have stopped at one or two donuts instead of more. There are those days you know. :) Anyway, so I guess those are my questions. Do you have window of a couple of pounds to fluctuate? How often do you weight? Does weighing help you stay in check or on track? If you don’t mind sharing.
p.s. I love reading your blog. Can’t wait for your book! :)

  188. PRMOM

I just came across your blog today and cannot wait to try your Baked Ziti and Cheese Lasagna recipes! I like the others who have commented am SO IMPRESSED with how you’ve lost your weight and maintained it. What I love most is you are not as obsessive about it. You still balance enjoying yummy savory meals with staying fit. I truly believe that is key. I was able to relate in so many ways. I tried many workouts, tried running and would love it for a while but then just get bored or tired of it. Once thing I never get tired of and ALWAYS shows results for me has been walking. It’s amazing! I’m originally from NYC, we walk everywhere out there. I now live in Chicago. When I visit my P’s in NY we eat like champs yet I still lose 4 lbs without even trying? How can that be? The only thing I can think of is all the walking. Keep up the great work. I look forward to following you this year!

  189. Tiffany

I accidentally stumbled across your blog this morning and I have to say I’m hooked! Thank you so much for sharing your story and being such an inspiration. I have never been one to pay a lot of attention to blogs but I haven’t been able to stop reading. The way you talk about your weight loss journey and your mental and emotional struggles has been such an eye opener. I’ve always had a problem with my weight loss attempts over the years and you’re right, looking at the big picture is very discouraging especially when you have over 100lbs to loose. Even thought I might not be able to go 5 years without eating the foods I love I CAN do it today and today is what matters. Thank you so much for reminding me of that! I look forward to following you and trying some of your wonderful recipes while on my own journey.

  190. Amy

    Hi Andie,

Your recent photos are GORG-US. Hope you’re having a great time in Costa Rica!

My friend and I are trying to find a place to go for Spring break (mid-March). We’re both really into the idea of central America. We’ve priced some things in El Salvador but Costa Rica sounds great. Can you please tell me some of the resources you used to book your trip (with affordability in mind, natch).

    Thanks and safe travels!
    -A

    1. admin

Hey Amy! Thanks so much :)

Camille and I just researched Central America like crazy and found a few places in Costa Rica and Panama that we fell in love with. Check Lonely Planet (the website) for lots of great travel advice about the area. We booked our houses through VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner) and found fantastic deals since we’re staying so long. I’d recommend you go to Manuel Antonio on the western coast of Costa Rica if you only have a short time. I hear the best things about it :)

      Andie

wow, just read 99 % of your blog stories!!!!! let me tell ya, I needed to read it…. very inspirational. thanks for sharing…..

  192. Heather Nickens

    Hi Andie,
What a story and what a journey. I found your blog today, as I am home resting from a severe bout of sciatica…you see I don’t rest…I run. I have lost 65 pounds, and am so diligent on my exercise, that I don’t relax much. However, I must now listen to my body, and I must take some of your fine advice. I thank you for sharing your amazing transformation, and I appreciate your wisdom, I guess even at 40, I still have much to learn. Not exercising for this past week has been difficult, but I am going to try to rethink my approach..thanks to you. Looking forward to trying some of your recipes. Good luck on your book!

  193. Ginny

Hey Andie! I love all of your recipes, but especially the wonton and egg roll recipes. Have you ever made a larger batch and then put the extras in the freezer? I’m considering making a batch and freezing before cooking them- could make for an easy meal if you get home late or don’t have much time! I’d love to hear your take on it, if you have had experience with this :)

  194. Leslie

I LOVE your blog. I just started my weight loss journey a month ago, so I’m currently 5 months pre-op. Your blog is one of my favorites, and I’m having such a great time catching up on your posts. I have 140 pounds to lose, so you’re an inspiration to me in many ways.

    Stay beautiful!! <3

  195. jasmine

I have tried to not over eat, but sometimes its hard. My problem is that i want to eat better/healthier and I go out and buy healthy foods, but I still eat fast food. I am addicted and do not know how to stop. I tell myself, “On Monday, I will stop eating it” by the end of the week I have failed. I was exercising a lot for a while, but got discourage because I wasn’t loosing any weight because I was still eating poorly. Please someone help! What do I need to do to break this habit!

    1. Savannah

Hi Jasmine! I struggled with fast food for years! Especially through college and even for a few years afterwards. It’s so quick and convenient. It took me a few months but I slowly and gradually weaned myself off. Once you don’t eat fast food for a few months…heck, even a few weeks…if you have it again you’ll find that it just doesn’t taste the same. I can’t stomach fast food anymore. One of the main reasons I stopped eating was by watching those documentaries on the Food Industry. Start with Food Inc, and then onto SuperSize me. It’s appaling! I’ve stopped eating fast food and exercise regularly (for the past 5 months) and have lost 10 lbs. It’s slow, but that’s healthy. I hope this helps!

  196. Savannah

You are fabulous. Your blog is one of the few I have bookmarked and visit every single day. I’m writing for advice…from you or any other readers! Like most, I struggle with food. I LOVE food. However, I work 12 hours shifts, rotating every six weeks. Either 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am. Being that I’m out the door by 5am and not coming back in until around 7 makes it so difficult to prepare delicious food. Any ideas, tips tricks?! I have no problem with motivation to work out and be active, but in order to complete my pie of a complete healthy and fit life…I need to incorporate the food! I am beyond excited for your books, and hope you do a book tour and signings…I’ll be there with bells on!

  197. Tami

First of all, hurry and finish your book, I am dying to read it. Second, you have totally inspired me. I am 40 now, but when I was turning 30 I lost a fair amount of weight and running was my main exercise. I am now married and have two small children and have gained all my weight back.

I need help being motivated when I don’t always sleep through the night and have zero time during the day to focus on myself.

What would you tell me is the most important thing to focus on, food or exercise?

Thanks for your inspirational spirit. You really are living the dream.

  198. Ashley

I just wanted to take a second and say thank you! Thank you for your emails which are a daily reminder that I can do this and be the person I want to be, a healthier me. Your blog was my “a-ha” moment and I enjoy reading it everyday! Thank you for the inspiration! One day, I hope to be able to inspire others as you have me. Thank you!

  199. AJ

Hi, I love your blog! I love it so much that I plan on making your recipe for Chicken Stew this week. But I also really want to make those biscuits you made with yours. Have you posted it somewhere else and I just haven’t found it? Is there anyway you can put it up if you haven’t?
    Thanks,
    AJ

  200. Samantha

I absolutely love this blog. It’s so incredibly inspiring and amazing to me. You’ve reminded me at a crucial time that things do not need to continue as they always have. Things can change. I cannot even begin to tell you how valuable that message is to me right now and at this time in my life. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world. Your strength and bravery has totally bowled me over.

  201. tina

I use to check the news first thing in the morning after feeding my two spoiled cats that is now i check in with your blog. My mood has changed for the better as you inspire me with your wit. You are one cool cat

    Hi Andie,
I found you through a recipe on Pintrest and I signed up immediately. I love you and your story. And, you write beautifully. I am trying hard to vote for you, but the website for the magazine is having difficulty. Very frustrating. Anyhoo, enjoy your trip. I am so enjoying the photos and the stories.

  203. Laura K.

The saddest realization was that being thin did not bring me happiness.

Andie, this is such an insightful and profound statement. When you lost all your excess weight, how did you deal with all the underlying anxiety and hurt of being an emotional/binge eater for so many years? How did you cope without having food as your best friend? When food is pulled away from me, I feel like a drug addict with an unmanageable craving, and more often than not, I succumb, which makes sticking to a food plan very difficult. Can you explain how you nurtured yourseld psychologically after you lost weight?

Your rock. You are a total inspiration :)

P.S. Looking forward to exploring Costa Rica in May.
    Laura

  204. Michelle

Wow, your story is incredible…seriously made me emotional. I feel like you, 135lbs ago. I started my journey at 330lbs, and currently I’m 289lbs. It’s stories like yours that keep me going, keep me motivated, and make me never give up. Keep up all your good work!!

    Sincerely,
    Michelle

  205. Dianne

I just found your blog today and I LOVE it. Your writing is brilliant and you are beautiful inside and out. I am sure I will learn a lot here…thanks.

  206. Maria

WOW! This website struck me months ago when I first discovered it on Pinterest and today, I wanted to say thank you. Your entry on “what i miss from 135lbs ago” moved me then and it still moves me today.

I was wondering, did you do this by yourself or did you have help? I find am not able to do it alone and am unable to get to the root of my fear. I joined WW only to find myself sitting in the back of the room, paralized by fear, putting all my efforts into hiding my tears. We bought a treadmill and I was so excited. Now it’s in the garage and I am so full of fear that the anxiety is overwhelming, paralyzing in fact. How does one get past the paralyzing fear?

My weight, I suspect, is my last big “hurdle” as I have overcome many other fears… Is it perhaps the last little bit of the “old” me that is clinging onto life? How do I become stronger than the fear? I know it’s an illusion. I have so much self-awareness and I know what needs to be done (i have lost weight before only to put it back on) and am frustrated by the paralysis.

Anyone have thoughts? Thanks for you time and the space here… :)

  207. Carol

Just a quick note to say hi and let you know how much I enjoy your site. Thank you for sharing your beautiful life. :)

  208. Meg

I’ve been trying to lose weight for 6 years, but I feel like I can’t. No matter what I try, I stay the same. And every time I try to keep myself from eating when I know I shouldn’t, my mind just goes “come on, one bagel won’t hurt you” and then after I give in to it, I feel angry and guilty. I don’t know where to turn anymore, I don’t know what to do – or how to start.

  209. C.P

    Hi Andy,
Your words have struck a chord in me. For most of my life I have been trying to lose weight, with almost no victory. Recently, my sister and I started working out together but I came to the place where I didn’t really want to restrict my diet. I’m a huge foodie and couldn’t imagine giving up everything I love. I want to say thanks. Your story is so similar to mine, I cried.
    No, seriously.
    I cried.
I want to come to the place where I don’t rely on food to comfort me, hold me, and be with me when nothing (or noone) else will.
Thanks for being an inspiration to me, you are a truly beautiful person, inside and out.
    Keep up the good work.
As it is, I have just started a blog.
I’m hoping that writing may help me get out my feelings and stop holding everything in so much.
Let me know if you have any advice,
    and Thanks again!!

  210. Amy

    Hi Andie,

I just got back from Central America (El Salvador) myself. I can tell by your posts (which got me so excited each day for my trip).
Central America is a very special place. The food, the ocean and the PEOPLE! I only went for a week but it was truly life changing. I feel so blessed to have spent time there. Looks to me you feel the same way. :)

  211. Linda Kuhlman

Your Costa Rica photos are fabulous!! What kind of camera do you use? I am new to your blog but have printed some recipes to try and will continue to follow you – thx!
    from Hilton Head Island, SC!

  212. Orion Kinkaid

I just found your site on a google search for “pulled pork tacos” I can tell you that I am making it right now and cannot wait to see how it turns out and the reaction on my co-workers faces tomorrow! Thanks for the awesome recipe and I love your site. Congrats on the weight loss too – cool to read about your journey!

I hate to begin with the same sentence so many people before me did, but anyway…
I stumbled across your blog two days ago and I read for 5 hours straight. English is not my native language, but even to me it is crystalclear that you can write. Write good I mean.
Even though I never was obese, I could instantly connect with what you have written in your blog. You are making it very easy for other people to connect with what you felt in certain situations.

Hope to read more from you. Maybe I will even order your book when you finihsed it ;o)

  214. Roz

    Andie,

I found your blog one day while perusing Pinterest. You have given me a wonderful, witty bit of writing that I gladly pursue when time allows. But mostly, I love to turn to your advice to those hard to answer questions. Like how to recover from the indulgent days. Or how to enjoy a salad and feel fulfilled afterwards. I’ve recognized that I have a lot of issues with food: namely it’s always been my comfort. I’ve never been really overweight (yes, you can hate me), but to be fair, I’ve never really been comfortable in my skin. So, food continues to be an issue. I’m trying to overcome these issues with body image, and it’s a slow, but somewhat fruitful (finally) process.

But besides all of this “unlearning” of my lifestyle that I’ve had to do, I still face one major roadblock. It’s what I call the “fat days”. For the majority of my week, I feel so good about myself, walking to work, eating salads (as you’ve so wonderfully explained can be more than just the lettuce base), not indulging in that bag of chips. But there are still the days; the days that make me want to curl up in bed and eat tubes of cookie dough. And while I’ve read your advice (and to be honest, plenty of other advice) on what to do after “giving in”, I don’t quite know how to address the initial feeling. It’s not the feeling of “well, it’s just one little snack”, which later becomes a full-blown feast. It’s the “screw it, I’d rather be fat and eat an entire Thanksgiving meal to myself”. It’s the bad eating days that I struggle with–not recovering from them. I know I can exercise and eat well the rest of the week or month and feel better. It’s overcoming this throwing-up-your-hands and giving up mood. Sometimes I’d rather just gain the weight I’m scared of and get fat, all for the sake of being happy and not caring what I eat. It’s a struggle I’m not quite sure how to address.

    Thanks,
    Roz

You certainly have an unbelievable gift and a bigger purpose in doing this wonderful blog/website. I am sure it is theraputic as well as rewarding to reach others with your heartfelt words. Your words did something for me that I have struggled with for more years than I care to admit. They enlightened me to my own pain that I have never been able to pinpoint. I recently began yet another weight loss “journey” and came across a healthy recipe “pinned” from your website . I went to your site and was INSTANTLY drawn in. Read several pages. Got to the page where you offer “too much” information about your father and his disease. It was during this paragraph that I had my first real “A HA” moment. I have heard and read for years on Oprah and various self-help tools that one must dig down deep to uncover the WHY of being overweight. I felt like I dug down deep and never could pin point anything. It was not until I read your passage and your reasoning for your love affair with food that I discovered my own deeper issues. I began to cry and I finally knew that why, when and how I became the obese person that I am. Thank you so much for your fearless and profoundly honest writing. I may never have uncovered my pain if it had not been for you sharing yours. I am so grateful! You are awesome and I will return regularly for inspiration. You are beautiful inside and out.

BTW, 135 pounds is about what I should lose to be in the healthy wieght category. Yikes!

  216. Lindsey

Coming across this blog today feels a little bit like fate. What you wrote in your “journey” section was such a striking mirror to my own life it forced me to put down the my bagel with cream cheese and chocolate and stare at the screen in shock. I’m 20 years old. My father was an alcoholic my entire life and passed away one year ago. One thing he handed down to me was his addictive personality, which I have projected onto food since I can remember. I’m so tired of living like this. Waiting for tomorrow, when my diet starts. I want to take control of my life and this might be the push that I need. So i’m going to sign up for weight watchers online tonight and put everything I have into changing my life. Thank you for making this blog.

  217. Melissa Borjas

Hello, I have a few questions. Some friends and I are trying to lose weight, started when two weeks ago our friend had a stroke he is only in his late 30’s and weighs 300+. Are all your food low in fat ect? We have been looking at different things like weight watchers recipes and stuff but everything helps.

  218. Mailoha

Hi! Thank you for posting so many great and easy recipes. I’m pretty much a workaholic and just never have time to make gourmet meals that take hours to prepare – but I hate eating out and prefer delicious homemade meals. So thank you :) Could you please tell me what pans/pots you have that you would say you simply can’t do without? Any brands in particular that you prefer?

  219. Becky Ratliff

I am really interested in your cookbook! Is it already out and I am just missing it? I am so inspired by your blog. I am a mother of 2, my oldest is 5 and youngest is 18 month. I am trying to loose the baby weight. I’ve lost the baby weight from my youngest. However, I don’t think I will ever, or want to, get back down to the weight I was before I had my first son. I was a tiny person, 97 pounds, until I got pregnant. Looking back at the pictures, I looked weird and people called me names and they were right! I want to be a healthy weight but more than weight, I want to be a healthy size and be able to run with my boys. Your story is so inspiring!

    Wow.

This past sunday I went shopping for new pants because all my old ones would not close even if I laid on the bed and sucked it in. I found myself crying in the fitting room with a size 20 pants perfectly zipped and comfortable. I couldnt believe I had gone that far. A size 20? Reall? Im only 27 and I feel like ive lost myself so then I decided to put a brave face on and weigh myself and there it was 265… at 27. What have I done? I have a daughter and i can bearly get enough energy to play with her. Im ready to change I’ve been eating healthy and hitting the treadmill and workout videos and Im ready for this change. I dont know how i found this website but all I know is that you made me cry so much because I felt that I was reading my exact thoughts as I read about your journey. You’ve given me hope and inspiration to be the person that I want to be outside … so it matches the great person I am inside. Thank you so much for giving me that hope.

    -Viviann

I just wanted to say thank you for opening my eyes to several things/myths about weight loss. I am a junior in college and weigh 280 lbs I have lost about 20 lbs already, and know it is going to be hard work but i look forward to one day looking back and thinking, “I DID IT.”

  223. karen

wow…I can’t believe that reading your blog has opened my eyes to a HUGE truth in my life. It feels like the only consistent thing in my life has been the feeling of instability. From childhood to now…@ 36 years old. Thank you for putting a name to that feeling that has somehow been eluding me(and that I have been running from). I feel free to change. Hopeful for change. Thank you. :)

  224. Robin

Good morning. I have to admittedly confess I’ve been subscribed to the daily emails and feeds for about three months now but never before today have I been moved so much by them. Frankly I don’t recall exactly how I came across you and your “brand of crazy” as you’ve so described. What I do know is I found the picture of you painted in the “About” and the “What I Miss” sections spoke to me so I opted to join the gang and see what you had to say. Don’t misunderstand me, I’ve read and enjoyed in a fictional way almost every email delivery I’ve received…exceptions, since I’m in the confessing mode, were those of when you were in South America; I didn’t exactly follow the pleasures you were experiencing. Probably just lack of experience on my part, but I digress. Anyway, to the point I came here to make. Today, today you moved me and not because you talked about bagels, no, not by any means. It was the picture you painted of the transformation you underwent. When something challenges my thinking conventions I tend to be drawn to its soul, and today’s feed was most soulful for me. Having lived a lifetime in the “less, less, less” mentality because of my eternal struggle with weight I found it beautifully comforting and simple to see the picture of a like journey painted in a different palette. Call it rose colored glasses if you will. I feel refreshed, enlightened, and empowered again to think positively about this part of who I am. Apparently unbeknownst to me I needed that today and for that I feel compelled to say thank you.

  225. Rosa

Hi! I really enjoy your blog. It helps me with the struggles I face in the losing weight battle. Your blog has helped me understand that losing weight doesn’t mean giving up the foods you love but instead finding ways for the food to love you back and aid in the weight loss. I have only one question and that is – did you have issues with saggy skin because you look wonderful and when I look at your before pictures I wonder where did the extra baggage go? I have alot of extra baggage and get discourage that even though I lose the weight I will still have the saggy skin. Do you have any suggestions for that?

  226. Shawnessy

Thank you for your blog – I have read all the postings in the links at left and am slowly working my way through your day-to-day posts. Like many who read your blog, I’m struggling with my relationship to food. I have dabbled in Geneen Roth’s writings and I will go back to them. I’m currently reading “Fit From Within” and finding it strikes a balance between clean eating and eating “dirty” haha. Sorta. Anyway, I really especially liked your post from 4/26. Thank you.

  227. Hillari

Hi I was wondering if there is somewhere with all of the nutritional information? I noticed only a couple recipes have them listed!?

  228. Alicia

I literally stumbled onto your blog while looking for recipes to use with my new Sunbeam cupcake maker. I’m in my 2nd week of my weight loss journey and I am inspired and empowered by your story. I cried while reading your What I Miss… section. Boy have I felt the same about the same things. I am only 4’11” and weight 243 (the heaviest I’ve ever been) but lost 1.8 lbs my first week. I have a long way to go but every loss is a cause for celebration. My boyfriend is also joining me on this journey. We are working on our weight loss together and your blog & recipes will make it easier for us both. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and love for cooking.

  229. Olivia

I really love your blog your energy and youa re a great inspiration. I like the was you break down the 1200-2000 calories in a day. No one does that. I am going to follow your guide lines for daily meals for the next week. I have a ton of weight to lose and feel so overwhelmed over it. I registered to your blog and I hope this is the beginning of a succesful journey towards weight loss….I will keep you posted on my progress.
    XO
    Olivia

I love love love your blog and story. We have very similar situations. I live in a tiny town in Western PA and when I decided to loose and maintain my life and weight there was a lot of speculation. It was definitely a dynamic I never really expected to have to think about. I love reading the part about what you sometimes miss about 135lbs…I get that…I get not just what you write about I get your passion and love for being in the kitchen. It is so nice to come across a story so close to my own heart. Great job :)BTW my start weight was 210 I am 5’9″ I am now at 152 and smooth sailing. I am so happy I now know how to run and I and am still baking and cooking away. I need to work more consistently on my blogging but it will all come as did the other balance in my life.

  231. Debbi H

I too have an unhealthy attitude towards excersie. I have not reached what I think is a normal weight or what medically and BMI states is “the normal weight”. I needed to find this site. I to need to come to terms with what is a comfortable weight for me where I am happy and not killing myself to be “NORMAL”. Normal is realitive after all. Thank you Thank you Thank you I am not alone in this out here.

You are amazingly inspiring and beautiful young lady that is wise beyond your years :0)

  232. Ger

How excited I am to have found your page. it is like reading my own thoughts. Losing weight is more than just that “losing weight” it is a journey that occupies our day and our nights and can take us from tears to laughter in an instant. you are a beautiful person on the inside and the outside. I look forward to logging onto your page :) Ger

  233. Shirley

I cant tell you how much I LOVE your food ideas, especially the ones with egg roll wrappers. YOU ARE A GENIUS.

  234. Kailey

I just want to thank you so much for being so open about your relationship with food. I too have dealt with emotional overeating and it’s something I feel like I battle with constantly. I lost thirty pounds 3 years ago and I’ve kept it off but I still feel the need to count my calories and avoid food I used to love. What makes it even more difficult is I am a Musical Theater major in college and we are constantly judged on how we look/what we eat. But reading your blog has made me realize I need to change my relationship with food. You are so inspiring and I can’t wait to try your recipes and read your upcoming book!!! Again thank you so much :)

  235. Jenna

I just spent the first 30 minutes of my work day reading your story, and let me just say “HOLY MOLY!” I am so moved by your journey and can relate to your weight history, 1,000%! I have always been overweight, always – always – always! There was a point in my life (after basic military training in 2006) when I lost a bunch of weight and was actually getting close to the point where I would consider myself thin…..key word ALMOST. Shortly, after, I got in a relationship, moved in together, and I am now the heaviest I have ever been in my life and I can’t stand it. I have let myself go, completely. I am not happy with the way I look. I know there is a thin woman underneath all of this weight, and you have inspired me to put the pedal to the medal!!! Today marks the day of the beginning of my journey. I know it will not be easy, but I also know that the end result will change my life, forever. Thank you for your inspiring words and for sharing your story with everyone, that is a very brave thing to do and I admire you :)

  236. Cathy

So glad that I stubbled upon you!! I’m on Weight Watchers and have lost 40 pounds…I have another 60+ to go…

  237. Megan

Wow, I found your blog through pinterest. Your story is amazing! Keep up the great work!!

  238. Jerene Tan

hey!! for your ‘perfect white cupcakes’ can you make them into layered cakes?

  239. Christen

I just found your blog and I definitely needed to find it! I just started my weight loss journey and I see you as my inspiration. I am 20 years old and set my weight loss goal at 130 pounds. Your story answers a lot of questions that I have about how “skinny” will feel. I often think, when I get this weight off what will I miss, what will I have to do to keep it off. Of course I am going to have to figure out a lot of it by myself but it helps to know that someone succeeded and looks fabulous now while still being able to have those small indulgences every now and then.

I just wanted to say thank you for writing. Thank you for sharing your story. Of course it all brought me to tears because it really hit home. But all in all, thank you for being an inspiration!

  240. Lizzie J.

    Hello!

I came to your blog via a friend’s pin on Pinterest about your weight loss. I have to say I am thoroughly inspired since reading through your journey. I felt extremely connected to everything you were saying. As I read I could feel myself nodding in agreement and I kept thinking, “This is exactly what I have been looking for.” Everything else I have been reading on the topic of weight loss has been the same regurgitated tips and tricks, but your blog is so refreshing and honest that I could not stop reading.

I am currently living in a dorm room on a college campus and cooking healthy and inexpensive meals has been pretty difficult. I was wondering if you had any tips to dorm meals? Since it is summer I do not have access to a meal plan(so no convenient but unhealthy fast food)but because of that I find myself eating less in general than is healthy. I have access to a community kitchen and some basic cookware but I am not sure what to buy that will give me the most bang for my buck. Suggestions please?

  241. Maggi veltre

I don’t know if it is a limitation of my laptop or not, but on your page, I can see and access only nine topics listed on the left side. I can see that there is at least one more topic and I can access it even though I see only the top half of the script, but I get the sense there are more topics. When I use the scroll function, only the blogs and right margin topics move. I haven’t had this happen on other pages. Has anyone else reported this problem?

  242. Lisa Kim

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I found you via a recipe posted on Pinterest. I’ve subscribed and will begin exploring your food suggestions. Given that I’m new here, this may be covered but I have celiac disease and therefore eat gluten free (since ’98 when the world was not so friendly to us GFers!) Would you keep GF options in mind for those of us that can’t use wheat, rye and barley?

Thanks so much and I look forward to a lovely new relationship and reading more of you. Wishing you immense success.

    Lisa

    Hi!

I have been a religious follower of your blog for so long…I’ve tried so many of your recipes and absolutely love them all. Quick question though…how often do you update the recipes section to reflect your recent posts? I’ve found myself searching the directory for something I saw you post a few months back and had to look trough the archives. Not a big deal, it would just be helpful to be able to quickly reference your more recent works of edible art :)

Can’t wait for your books to come out!

  244. Lacey M.

    Hi Andrea,

I just discovered your blog this morning and you cannot believe how much you’ve inspired me! I am a recent high school graduate and I am 88 pounds overweight. Since March 2, 2012, I have lost 16 pounds. I haven’t really been in touch with the eating right and exercising in the past month due to my graduation and finals. I have been struggling trying to get back with it, but now I know that if I don’t start now, I will be back over 200 pounds again. Thank you for your inspiring story. :)

  245. Joey

My name is Joey, I am female. I am on a journey to losing about 35 pounds. I want to live a normal happy life while doing so though. I’m engaged to marry my best friend, Cameron, and I want to be healthy and fit and happy for my future with him. My question for you i guess is, what was your diet like? To what extreme did you go? Eating vegies all day, or spending hours in the kitchen to make something healthy. I understand you love to cook, so I guess I’m asking, what about us, who don’t have the time. My fiance’ is super fit, we go to the gym every day, and i do cardio, weights, and abs everyday. I just can’t wait to see the pounds start coming off. Thanks for sharing. it’s truly inspiring.

  246. Hayley

Hi Andie, I have loved your blog for a fair while. I am currently on a weight loss mission to loose 30kg. I have already lost 5.8kg as of last night! After years of not treating my body properly I am learning to love myself in the process to, or at least tryinng to. I love your blog, love how sensible it is, love how balanced you are and love how there is so much more to you and your life than weightloss. I dont even regret the gain to be honest I do feel it has forced me to develop other sides of my personality to deal with it… just one of the many war wounds of life! Next stop marriage and losing the weight before I try and have babies. Pop on over for a read if you feel like so I am less of a stalker of you and you know a little about me.

Again, fantastic work on the blog.

    Hayley

  247. Leslie

My daughter told me to read this blog and I am so glad I did!! I love it!! It is so inspirational. I am doing a low carb thing right now. I have lost weight in the past doing this. I also think about Weight Watchers though….. I am 40 and HAVE to get this weight off!!!! 265. I am starting to not want to go out in public. It is even getting hard for me to go to church. Thanks for sharing all of this Andrea, and thank all of the rest of you for sharing too! Best wishes to you all!

  248. Shirley

I made your tuna rangoons and they were easy and delicious! I could eat a whole bunch of them…..

  249. rachel holder

I am just curious to know what finally triggered in your mind to get you motivated and stay on track?

I am sooooo glad I found your site! I am so inspired by the way you write! It speaks to me in a way no other has! I was at the end of my rope with my weight issues and ready to give up. In a prayer I said “Please send help” and then a friend posted your site on pinterest. THANK YOU!!! I can’t wait for your book!

I was just wondering how far in advance I can make the frosting. I have had some bad experiences with making my own, and I don’t want to make and make and make anymore.lol. I would like to try it a few days before I need it for a birthday cake. I don’t want to wait until the day of and mess it up!

  253. Tracy

Thank you for writing such an encouraging and well written blog! I have struggled with my weight for years and feel that I am FINALLY at a point where I am ready to do something about it. I have spent the majority of my life feeling horrible about myself and feeling like a complete failure because of my weight. I came across your blog from a post on Pinterest and I’m so happy that I did. Just knowing that I can be successful in the battle and knowing that I’m not alone makes a world of difference. I look forward to visiting often and gathering all sorts of ideas and recipes. Thank you again for baring your soul to help others!

  254. Karen

Thank you for this blog! It is a great inspiration for me. I have been trying to get on track with my weight since I graduated college and stopped doing sports on a regular basis. My greatest challenge is staying dedicated enough. I have more then enough desire and motivation but I just cant seem to keep on track. No matter what, after work, i always seem to end up on the couch reading and relaxing all night instead of doing a workout and just last night I had homemade pizza without a second thought of calories or my dieting lol. I am hoping that your blog and your dedication will help me get up off that couch more. It shows that there is success at the end of all this :) Thank you again

I’ve read many weightloss blogs, some good, some great, but mostly women who are already “skinny” talking about how to loose those 10 extra pounds. I too, have always struggled with weight and went from 210 to 160 and still have more to go. I often loose focus, and living in Los Angeles often beat myself up if i slip and eat a brownie and its all down hill from there. Especially if i dont hit the gym 6 days a week. You reinstated to love my body, love my food, and dont focus on being the smallest i can be but the healthiest and everything else will fall into place. So from the bottom of my food loving heart. Thank You.

  256. Dale

I discovered this blog through Pinterest, and am so impressed with your success, your recipes and especially with your writing! You have a charmingly realistic and honest style, and the photography is fabulous. I am currently on WeightWatchers and can use some inspiration on what to eat.
Your winning personality reminds me of my daughter in law, to whom I have recommended your blog. She, too, is a foodie and fabulous cook and will love your blog. Thanks so much for doing this!

I have been trying to lose weight since the beginning of this year and i have lost a little over 30lbs. Continuing my weight lose i found your blog, and it made me rethink everything. I still want to lose weight and reach my goals, but i love myself now, for who i am now. thank you so much.

  258. Morgan

    Andrea,
Thank you for your blog and your honesty about weight loss and food. I love reading your story! As a woman trying to reach the same goal you did, knowing someone else has felt what I am feeling now really helps.
I do have 2 questions, if you don’t mind answering them :-) They are both about over eating, especially late at night. How did you combat your mind after eating to not eat more? I can give myself a perfectly sized portion of food and know that it is enough, but not “feel” full afterward. How do you stop yourself from eating too much and then feeling guilty?
    2. Why is it that after 8pm my body goes into desperation mode and I think I might starve if I don’t have another meal?! How did you fight this? I know I am not hungry and I know I won’t be burning any of the food I eat past 8pm, but sometimes I think I may go crazy if I don’t eat more. I struggle with emotional eating, and any tips you have to share about how you overcome these moments, would be great.
    Thank you!

  259. Nettie

Thank you for your blog. I have, in the past 14 months, lost 120 lbs. I have about 15 – 20 to go, which will mean my weight loss is about the same as yours. But, I am much older than you. I am 56, and this is the second time in my life I have done this. The last was 17 years ago. And before that were the many years of all else you write about. Your blog is so honest, so true, such a contribution. You are blessed to have made the journey so consciously at a young age. Your writings on “what I miss” and maintenance are so true and so inspiring; they have affected me very deeply. I look forward to your book.
    Best,
    N

    Hey Andie!
I absolutely love your blog, you are such an inspiration! I was wondering how you got your blog to be so popular…I am trying to start one myself but am getting discouraged by the lack of followers :( Please Help!

    Best Regards,

    Laura

  261. Le Anne

Thanks for your pure honesty! I am not sad for you but very glad for you that you are so in touch with what’s going on in you. Though an outwardly joyful person, I’ve had to fight “the dark side” all of my life. The redemption I’ve found came through the Bible. No preaching here. Just the absolute truth on what helps me. I still fight low days, but a trip to the Psalms helps me so much. He is the glory and the lifter of my head.- Ps 3:3 . Love your blog, will buy your book!

  262. Katie

    Andrea,
I had to contact you and tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog. I am behind the times and just started getting into the world of blogging, but I subscribed to yours immediately. I am dealing with much of the same issues you are. I particularly enjoyed the post about the things you do/don’t miss about being heavy. It made me cry. Until I read that I always thought I was okay with being heavy, but that truly opened my eyes. It really gave me something to think about. I am trying to get my eating on track as well and hoepfully the pounds will come off. It’s been a rough road though. I lost about 80 pounds when I was in college, but I got there by unhealthy ways. Boy have I been paying for it since then. I struggled with anorexia and taking diet pills that almost destroyed my body. I have since gievn up those destructive habits, but back on came the weight. So right now I am just focusing on gettinh my head right and eating better. One step at a time.

  263. Veronique

    Hello Andrea,

I just finished reading your post on how you feel sometimes and I love that you shared it. I myself suffer from depression and I have to say you could not have described it any better. I always struggle when describing it to loved ones. please know that you are not alone either.

    Stay strong ,

    Vero

Hi Andrea, I have never replied to a blog before but felt pulled to respond to your post today. Your writing could so easily have been mine for about 30 years. I worked so hard at trying to be happy, grateful, joyful inside. Outside it looked like I had it all which made me feel even sicker. Nothing seemed to work. Long story short, I ended up at Al-Anon, for people who have been affected by someone else’s drinking. Not sure what your comment, something about alcohol induced childhood, was all about but it jumped out at me. There are many children of alcoholics that think once they no longer live with the situation they won’t be affected by it. Anyways, slowly but surely, through attending meetings, getting a sponsor and working the steps everything started to change. People had been where I was and were willing to share their experience, strength and hope with me. They had what I wanted … peace, serenity, joy and tools for how to live life on life’s terms. Not sure if you have been affected by someone else’s drinking but I thought I would just share with you in case. Sending you blessings …
    Donna

  265. Danielle B

I really enjoyed reading your blog. You remind me to remind myself that my size isn’t me. And to share a little quote I thought up, or at least I think I thought it up, when it comes to relationships and looks (of which I have issues with) “Sure we look at the cover of a book to see if we’d enjoy the story, but it’s the pages inside that keep us reading.” I’m 5′ 9″ as well and 178lbs, which since about March I’ve lost 20lbs, so this is a big plus for me. But I know that I always think that a guy won’t like me because of my size. I’ve been about 200lbs for probably 3 or 4 years, since I got out of highschool. And I’ve had plenty of boyfriends. So even though I want to get fit to feel good about myself, feel good naked, and feel good about being in public with my boyfriend and not thinking every other girl is hotter than me, I know that getting in shape is good for my body and my self esteem. I continually tell myself oh it shouldn’t matter, but that’s just the kinda girl I am. I am my own biggest bully. So thank you for giving me some motivation :)

  266. Samantha J.

    Wow! What a wonderful blog!

I just started my journey about 3 weeks ago following the weight watchers program. It’s been encouraging me to eat healthy AND workout. However, the pressures of my family and sorority sisters compromises my confidence level.

I’m finding it extremely hard to reduce my stress level. I’m getting married next June and by that time I really want to be at my goal weight. I’m currently 170 lbs and would like to be around 125.

I know the stress seriously holds be back from the weight loss..and I know that the weight won’t come off overnight, but it’s hard to stay focused.

Are there any tips you/ya’ll could share to reduce stress/stay motivated?

    It would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your blog :) I can’t wait for your book!

    Samantha

Just stumbled onto your website. I am so down now. I lost 143 pounds about 4 years ago. Great, except that I am slipping back into my old compulsive eating and have regained 50 pounds back. I am so scared and disappointed in myself that I am in the bad circle again. You know you gain a little weight, feel bad, turn to your old “friend” food, and then gain more weight. I hope by reading your inspirational story it will help motivate me.
    Thanks,

  268. Esther Cadena

You are truly an inspiration. I look forward to your books and can’t wait to see them published.

  269. Vera

We’re all together in this and your blog helps.
I’m taking one day at a time.
    Noticing nature around me.
    Buying healthful ingredients.
Keeping fresh fruit and veggies ready on the counter.
(They’re as pretty as they taste, too). Wow, cherries, cantaloupes and pineapples are awesome right now.
Walking past the candies and cookies at the store.
    Eating a big breakfast.
    Walking every day.
Writing 3 things I’m grateful for every night.
Occasionally taking a homemade meal to someone in need.
    Praying for you.

oh my gosh. absolutely fabulous blog. What a great writer you are! Your story and honesty kept my tears coming! Thanks for sharing! I’m NOT gonna make myself run when I hurt for 3 hours cramping after:)

  271. SarahPeas

What an inspiration! I am 5’11” and 270 pounds. I hope to lose 110. My doctor has told me for years that everyone KNOWS what to do, but everyone must figure out their own personal reason why they don’t do it. Thank you so much for putting this out there. It really has helped. Best of luck, Sara

i feel utterly liberated. like a weight has been lifted.

last summer i withered away. i was a lifeless pole, and if you pushed me hard enough i probably would have fallen over. i worked out so much (and diddnt eat enough) that i was always hunched over and looked tired. when i came back to school i gained weight, and the little monster in my head was NOT very happy about that. this summer has been different, and after reading your blog i realize that if some form of exercise isn’t working for me then i don’t really have to do it. i can just be myself and still have a healthy appetite! i don’t have to what seems like starve myself to be skinny! my natural weight will fall where it falls and i can be happy with that :)

i just wanted to thank you for helping me come to that realization, with out reading about your story i don’t know how long i would have gone down the wrong path! :D so thanks :)

  273. Robin

    Andie,

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there’s something about you that I feel drawn to. Today’s post shows the depths you continue to go to “keep it real” with yourself. Years ago I decided for my mental health I needed to learn to be brutally honest with myself. For me I feel this is a learned skill. I mean let’s face it we’re a fight or flight species; our natural reaction is to protect us…even if that’s against ourselves. Over the years I’ve really learned to appreciate and love the person I am no matter what growth I feel I have yet to achieve. That’s not to say I always like myself because frankly who does ALWAYS like a choice they’ve made. But I do love myself. Wow, that looks really conceited in writing. Lol!

None the less the point of my post is to say thank you for being you, for being imperfect, and for staying committed to us, your loyal subscribers. My favorite philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, is noted as having said, “It belongs to the imperfection of everything human that man can only attain his desire by passing through its opposite”. I have the utmost faith you’ll find the balance in connecting with us that’s right for you.

    Yours truly,
    Robin

  274. Lois

    Wow!
I just wandered on to your blog by way of Pinterest. Blew me away, it did!
At my age and my profession (therapist and years in a courtroom) not much has that effect.
Thank you for your ability to share and your kindness in doing so.
    Lois

Well put. It’s amazing how powerful raw honesty has. It over powers drama and sensationalism. Truly inspiring!

    Questions for You
by Can You Stay for Dinner

    Friends,
Even though I´m furiously editing my weight loss memoir so that you´ll have it in your hands next spring, I´d just love to hear from you. What I´d really like to know is:
What questions do you have for me that I haven´t answered? What topics would you like me to talk more about in a post, in a blog series? I ask because although I feel I have a pretty solid handle on what I deem worth sharing, I´m nearly certain there are things you wish I´d cover that I don´t currently. And, barring anything that would require me to write a post the length of my foot (11 inches, thankyouverymuch), the sky´s the limit in terms of topic.

I will do my very best to answer them, as always, with highly cringe-worthy honesty.

    All the good things,
    Andie

I, too, am getting the repeat e-mails. However, my question would be how to motivate yourself on a daily basis. Or if you get off track, how do you make yourself get back on track? I’ve lost 40 lbs on WW but I’m sick of counting points. I’m just bored already with the idea of counting calories. What do I do to motivate myself AND keep eating in such a way as to lose 30 more pounds without counting – anything?

  278. Kristin

This is a great story. I am 5’9 and started out at 268lbs, so I am exactly in the same position you were. Thanks for the inspiration. Are there any before photos?

  279. Le Anne

Thanks for the ideas on healthy snacks! I started taking pickle slices instead of chips in my lunch… I alternate between dill and bread & butter.. Like you, every once in a while, I get to have real chips, but not everyday.

  280. Amy

Love your blog. I have not tried any of the recipes yet but am looking forward to making a few of them. I would love to see included with the recipes the nutritional content.
I lost 45lbs a few years ago and through 2 pregnancies I somehow managed to maintain but now trying to manage 2 boys, work, husband, house & so on the weight has crept back up.

  281. Nicolette

I just wanted to let you know that your blog is amazing. You are awesome, your recipes are awesome… just, everything! Thank you for sharing your life with us! Good luck with your books, I look forward to them!

  282. Amy

    Hello Andie! :)

I know you’re a very busy lady, I just HAD to say something. You’ve truly been an inspiration to me!

June 2011, I found myself at 300lbs. I’m 5’4. Although I have great self esteem and a boyfriend who loves me dearly, I just was NOT OKAY with that.

Now, August 2012 I am 260, and still plugging away. The weight has not come off at quickly as I would like, and I am truly doing my best, but your blog is going to get me to my goal weight of 175. Who knows, I might even keep going :)

Anyway, thank you for your words, and your pictures, you are beautiful.

    Love,
    Amy

  283. Vicki

Hi! OMG! I’m so excited/afraid too , that I found my TWIN! Everything in your life that happened, the same happened to me.
I’m new to the Blogging world, don’t have a Website, but I came across yours and couldn’t believe what I was reading. Myself! WHEW!
I would very much like to keep in touch with you!
Yes, it bothered me when my Obese Father picked me up from school.

    Please keep in touch,

    Your Blogging Twin, Vicki

  284. Dee Zornow

I’m new to Pinterest and just came across your blog today and was totally impressed looking at all those miniature muffin meals. Can hardly wait to try some!
I live alone, and in my 70’s, so the appetite isn’t what it used to be. Making these small portions will be perfect and I can freeze the individual leftovers. Using a 6-cup tin wouldn’t be a bad idea either!
    Thank you so much.
Now if someone could only tell me how to get my pic on Pinterest, I’d be a “happy cooker”

  285. Dawn Montaner

I have just been diagnosed with severe gluten allergy, including the “gluten rash” and “gluten skin blisters”! I am 62 and never been allergic to anything. This is quite a challenge plus I started Weight Watchers a week ago and have already lost four pounds. I live in Waco, Texas so the options to extensive gluten free products is limited. Do you have any great tasting recipes that you might send me to help me get this party started? Great website and amazing story! Thank you.

  286. Elaine Mica Perez

Hi Andie! I just want to thank you for sharing your struggle, your survival methods, and everything else. I ave an eating disorder and am always truly inspired by those who openly share their stories. Your work as helped me with my own blog. I hope you don’t mind that I reference you and your blog, and please pardon that I refer to you as f I know you personally by Andie! Lol anyhow I’d love for you to read and share my blog with others. Again thanks for your work!

I just want to ask you a question actually. And hopefully it’s not too personal. But my question is about your skin. I have such a similar story to yours… I even worked as a PA in a movie in my home town. I weighed 260lbs, today I weigh 140. But no matter how skinny or small… or how much work I do I only feel comfortable bundled up because I have saggy skin and stretch marks EVERYWHERE! Do you have any advice or anything? Cause surgery money isn’t anywhere in my future currently.

  288. amanda

hi.. I say you lost 135 pounds.. I was wondering how you did it? A few years ago in undergraduate school I lost 30 pounds in 3 months ( as a summer intern in NYC is was pretty easy, all the running around) but going back to school and the stress of doing creating the art for my art show and working and creating the costumes for a theater production I ended up gaining it all back. Since then I have been trying to loose it all again.. I have been on Weight Watchers, I eat pretty healthy, veggies and salads like crazy; I wont like I do love chocolate, but I limit myself. I seem to loose a pound here and then their but nothing like that 30, that made me feel amazing.. So what did you do? because I want to loose more then 30 this time.

  289. Maggi

Amanda, that’s what this whole site is about. You’ll have a wonderful time browsing all the topics. It’s a story worth reading more than once!

  290. Sarah

Hey! First off, I hope this makes you smile – since your messaged has reached yet another person, on the other side of the world! :) Your writing is amazing, and your stories are so blunt and honest, I loved them!
I’m 19 years old (just turned 19 yesterday!) and about to be a sophomore at college! Last semester, I weighed myself at 248 lbs. which is the heaviest that I’ve been. I immediately decided that I need to make a change in my life. I’m such an outgoing girl, and I’ve always been surrounded by people, but I’ve never truly felt freedom with my body. I started going to the gym 5 times a week for 40 minutes, altering between the stationery bike and the elliptical (I liked them both!). I headed home for the summer after 2 months of exercising, yet not changing too much to my diet. I weighed myself when I got home, and I weighed 227 lbs! I was proud of myself, but during the summer I stopped exercising. I tried to walk as much as possible, and converted to eating healthy foods! It’s practically the end of the summer, and I weigh approximately 207 lbs! (yay!)

I really want to get all the way down to 145 lbs. but I feel SO GUILTY about the fact that I didn’t really do much to lose the weight that I have lost up until now… (And like you, I’ve always been big – and sadly I still am!)

Do you have any tips on healthier eating while you’re at college? I’ll try to avoid pizza at three AM and I’ve pretty much cut out all alcohol from my diet! I’m scared that I’m going to gain it all back! Did you have moments during your weight loss period where you didn’t know what to do?

Even if you can’t reply to this, I just wanted to let you know that you’re amazing and you’ve inspired me so much!

  291. Danielle Strong

I just wanted to say Thank you. I stumbled on your website while looking for a recipe for quinoa burgers. I have been struggling with being overweight.I could go on and on about that but I’ll spare you. :) anyway after reading your story I turned off my computer and went for not so graceful 50 min. walk and when I got home I did 15 sit-ups! wooo hooo!!! I feel great. I hope and pray that I keep it up. I actually look forward to doing it again. It was tough but worth it.Thank You!!!

  292. Christen N.

Hi Andie! First of all, I love your blog. I’m new here, but once I started reading I related so much I couldn’t stop. You are inspiring and I see a lot of myself in your struggles/accomplishments with weight. In the past year and a half I’ve lost around 70 lbs and have been maintaining/toning up. It’s been wonderful and is truly a lifestyle change that I enjoy. But, I still have my days (or weekends) when I indulge too much. I work so hard to be fit and healthy, and in one night of too much pizza and a bit (ok more than a bit) of ice cream I wake up 6 lbs heavier. After these indulgences I always get back on track. I always quickly lose the extra fluff, but it’s the emotional strife I can’t take. The feeling of failure, that I let myself down. What I really want is to be able to enjoy the occasional ice cream cup or piece of pizza in moderation. After all this time and hard work, I’m still all or nothing. My question to you is, how do you enjoy these treats in moderation after a life of no moderation? When you do have set backs, what’s your game plan? How do you handle the emotions that come with a few extra pounds? Thanks for your blog! It’s been such an encouragement to me in this journey.

  293. Robin

    Time / money saving tips:

    * Chop, portion and freeze onion so you can just thaw and use in a cooked dish

    * Save celery that’s gone a little soft by cutting it up and either putting it in cold water in the fridge for a bit to help crisp it back up or chopping it and freezing to use in soups and stews (not good to eat raw after frozen)

    * Cook (just shy of done) and freeze pasta & rice portions so they’re at the ready when you need them. Ready pasta by dropping in a pot of boiling water and rice by steaming covered with a little liquid in the microwave for a few.

    Hi Andy,

I don’t know if you received my e-mail about growing up with a fat dad. I really love you BLOG!! it is amazing I love your writing style, can’t wait for the book.
My biggest question, for you is what do you, when you are lacking motivation, and overcome by stress? And just throw in the towel? Because being unhealthy is so much easier. I always find, when I am going through stress at work or at home, I tend to shut down… I have had a rough 18 months. I won’t bore you with the details, but bottom line. I went through IVF and it did unsuccessful. I got a 2nd opinion from another specialist about 9 mos ago, the best advise he gave me was to lose weight… After hearing this, emotionally I became paralyzed and stuck “SHUT DOWN”. I wasted a lot of time and here I am same weight no motivation, STUCK… Help! Any advise or words of wisdom are a great help….

What do you do to stay motivated?
XOXXO KUDOS to you and you succesful journey and I do know every day is a struggle…

I think you are truly an inspiration to not just women, but people in general. You saw the problem, tackled it head on, wrestled with it, struggled, and in the end you came out on top! I applaud you and envy you! I lost 30 pounds a couple years ago and with the start of my new job in December 2010, I have steadily gained it all (and I mean ALL) of it back! I have been struggling to get over the hump and just lose 5 pounds for the last 6 months! I lot of it is lack of willpower and a huge sweet tooth, but seriously, even training for a half marathon isnt doing anything for me! I did find inspiration in a few of the books you have mentioned in your blog, and I successfully placed an amazon order not 5 minutes ago. Thank you for knocking the sense back in to me and making me remember that the struggle is worth it and not to give up!

  297. Danielle Strong

I read and commented on your blog on Aug.19th. I just wanted to thank you again. I have been walking 2-3 miles just about everyday since then. I also started coaching a junior varsity volleyball team.I never played a game of volleyball in my life but the girls needed a coach and so I volunteered just after 3 days of walking. I really do not think I would have done so had I not started walking those few days prior.I have a lot more motivation. I feel great and I’m losing weight and having a blast!!! THANK YOU!!

  298. Kaycie

I just have to tell you that I came across your blog on Pinterest and so happy that I did! I love that you have an awesome sense of humor and associate that in with food. Makes it so much more fun to read! I love to cook and have been trying some of your recipes and love them! I myself am on a weight loss journey – it’s not much – 15 pounds. But I find it difficult when my boyfriend LOVES to eat out and addition I work 2 jobs – 65 hours a week. So it can be tough to find the motivation – however I am choosing to turn things around. Not only for the weight loss, but just being healthier in general. Thanks so much for writing – is your cookbook done yet? I can’t wait to purchase it!!

  299. erica

I just found your blog from a pinterest pin. I love it. But I would like to follow. There isn’t a follow option outside the email version. would love to see a option through the wordpress reader. You are an inspiration!

    Thanks!
